Profession A paid occupation. A profession as a vacation requiring advanced education ,training and skills. A profession is a disciplined group of individuals who adhere to ethical standards.
Infrastructure of profession Ford and Gibbs have identified eight components of a mature professional infrastructure. Initial professional education Accreditation Skills development Certification Licensing Professional development Code of ethics Professional society
Characteristics of profession Involves a skill based on theoretical knowledge. Involves a skill that requires training and education. Must demonstrate competence by passing a test. Integrity is maintained by adherence to a code of conduct. Service is provided for the public good Is organized.
Theoretical Knowledge Idea of a profession not limited by thought that all required information and knowledge is available at once. Knowledge is “theoretical” in that it’s based on sound reasoning and thinking drawn from scientific knowledge and fact
Training and Education Allows for the transmission of specialized skills and knowledge that the professional must have. Skills” defined differently by different professions, but the training and education of a profession should be evident in the areas of skills and knowledge.
Certification and Examination A professional must demonstrate competence by passing a test/exam Many professions require tests for licensing or certification (teachers, nursing, plumbers). Not all occupations that require a license or certification meet all other criteria for being considered a profession.
Integrity and a Code of Ethics Integrity of a profession is maintained by adherence to a code of conduct Ethics of a profession outline the way in which individuals should conduct themselves. Typically have a committee/process for review breach of conduct reports and discipline offenders . Integrity of a professional is measured by the ability of the ethics committee to review and act on an individual’s unethical behavior.
Public Good Professional service is available, not just to certain individuals, but to everyone. If a professions service is available and accessible to the public, it’s considered to be “for the public good”
Organization and Associations Organization of a profession indicates that there are committees, task forces and other special groups of members that function within the larger structure, all working toward a common goal or mission. Group must show a purpose beyond that of a collection of people with a job in common.
