Presentation Topic :Characteristics of a profession Presented by : Tanzeela Batool Presented to : Ms. Saira Nokhaiz

Profession  A paid occupation. A profession as a vacation requiring advanced education ,training and skills. A profession is a disciplined group of individuals who adhere to ethical standards.

Infrastructure of profession Ford and Gibbs have identified eight components of a mature professional infrastructure.   Initial professional education  Accreditation  Skills development  Certification  Licensing  Professional development  Code of ethics  Professional society

Characteristics of profession   Involves a skill based on theoretical knowledge.  Involves a skill that requires training and education.  Must demonstrate competence by passing a test.  Integrity is maintained by adherence to a code of conduct.  Service is provided for the public good  Is organized.

Theoretical Knowledge   Idea of a profession not limited by thought that all required information and knowledge is available at once.  Knowledge is “theoretical” in that it’s based on sound reasoning and thinking drawn from scientific knowledge and fact

Training and Education   Allows for the transmission of specialized skills and knowledge that the professional must have.  Skills” defined differently by different professions, but the training and education of a profession should be evident in the areas of skills and knowledge.

Certification and Examination   A professional must demonstrate competence by passing a test/exam Many professions require tests for licensing or certification (teachers, nursing, plumbers).  Not all occupations that require a license or certification meet all other criteria for being considered a profession.

Integrity and a Code of Ethics   Integrity of a profession is maintained by adherence to a code of conduct Ethics of a profession outline the way in which individuals should conduct themselves.  Typically have a committee/process for review breach of conduct reports and discipline offenders .  Integrity of a professional is measured by the ability of the ethics committee to review and act on an individual’s unethical behavior.

Public Good   Professional service is available, not just to certain individuals, but to everyone.  If a professions service is available and accessible to the public, it’s considered to be “for the public good”

Organization and Associations   Organization of a profession indicates that there are committees, task forces and other special groups of members that function within the larger structure, all working toward a common goal or mission.  Group must show a purpose beyond that of a collection of people with a job in common.
