PATRIOT PRESSKNOWN BY OUR LOVE“By this, all will know that you are Mydisciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35Dear Metro Families:Over the past few years, Metro Christian Academy hasreceived recognition for a lot of wonderful things includingaccomplishments in academics, the arts, athletics, andbeing voted one of the top 50 Christian High Schools in theUnited States. As faculty, staff, and students, we are proudof the exciting things Metro has pursued in excellencethrough Christ. That said, of all the amazing things this community can beproud of, my heart leaps the most at the love and outreachI see demonstrated by our students and families. Whetherit is our students who minister love and attention toneighborhood school children, a Metro elementary footballteam who has adopted a local high school football team- providing a weekly meal and clothing, or our students,Board, faculty and staff who have come together to serveand love families from the apartment communities aroundus through a community outreach, each of these thingsrepresent true love and discipleship. These acts of love and service speak to an identity and notjust an accomplishment. While we can boast in the Lordregarding our achievements such as our average ACT scoresand scholarship levels, our acclaimed arts accomplishments,or our athletic achievements, we can find our identity asa community rooted in love and willing to serve those inneed around us. May we be forever known for our love forGod, for each other, and for our neighbors. With a joyful heart,Roger GerstenbergerDon’t forget to do good and to share what youhave because God is pleased with these kinds ofsacrifices. If I can impact all of the students with the ability to be more innovative, they will take this skill to many fields – science, technology, math, andengineering. The world needs creative solutions to today’s problems. I trulybelieve each of us can learn to be more innovative”. NATIVE AMERICAN MASTER SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY THEMED ARTARTISTTo say art is in Bryan Waytula’s blood is an understatement. Both his motherand his grandmother are master craftsmen in basketry and National Treasuresof the Cherokee Nation.Their talent lies in weaving, but Waytula’s crafts are painting and drawing.“I wasn’t the greatest at weaving, and jokingly my grandmother gave me apencil and wanted to see what I could do with that,” he says, fondly recallinghis family’s encouragement of the arts.Waytula has created a unique and contemporary style of realism paintingsthat features shapes and bright colors. This eye-catching approachimmediately identifies one of his paintings as a “Waytula.” His aesthetic hascaught the eyes of many. Earlier this year, he applied to the famed Santa FeIndian Market and was accepted on his first try, a nearly unheard-of feat. Heexhibited there August 19 - 20.Waytula is a driven and determined artist, but receives additional motivationfrom his wife, Linda; his 2-year-old son, Bryson; and his students at MetroChristian Academy, where he is an art teacher. “My students push me thesame way I push them,” he says. Waytula’s students emboldened him tostep outside of his comfort zone by helping him create an Instagram page(@waytulajit) to show off his work. Waytula’s work also can be viewed atbryanwaytula.com. PATRIOT PRESS 2017 BLOCK PARTY Metro’s block party for the surrounding neighborhoods was a huge success!! More than 650 people enjoyed hot dogs, trunk-or-treating, a petting zoo, inflatables, rock wall climbing, face painting and more! The event was spearheaded by the Metro high school leadership class. They recruited their classmates and the PTF to help pull off this giant block party. The students turned Halloween into more than ‘trick- or-treat’. They weren’t just passing out candy and trying to scare kids. They wanted to make a difference for the neighborhoods surrounding the school. It was gesture recognized by people who have lived there that no matter where one is from and no matter where one is at it doesn’t take much to have fun! Metro is proud of these students for all their hard work putting together a great evening for the community!32 COMMUNITY BLOCK PARTY

PATRIOT PRESS SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY With the first total eclipse visible from the United States since 1979, the “zone of totality” stretched across 14 states from Oregon to South Carolina, passing just north of Kansas City, Missouri. MCA teachers and students participated in a themed solar eclipse watch day including eclipse decorated donuts, solar system watercolor paintings, a picnic on the lawn, and a live feed from NASA streaming throughout the day. More than 1,000 people watched the eclipse from the school’s football field. On the football scoreboard, the words Solar Eclipse replaced the customary spots for home and away teams. The game clock was a countdown to the moment of near totality in Tulsa. The crowd fell mostly silent, mesmerized, as the countdown reached zero and students, wearing special glasses, stared at the sun. Thank you all who made this day possible - especially the Science Department for spearheading the event.34 SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY

FALL 2017ALUMNI TAILGATEAlumni from various classes were on hand to celebrate Homecoming witha special tailgate. Former classmates enjoyed touring the school, a greatdinner, wonderful fellowship, and lots of laughs as they perused oldyearbooks! Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni, forinformation on joining the Alumni Association email [email protected]. FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY Breakfast is generally considered the most important meal of the day, but this school year lunch is taking precedence. We’ve been tapping into a growing culinary trend by hosting Food Truck Friday on the last Friday of each month. We feature a variety of local vendors, including Brownie’s Gourmet Burgers, Chick-fil-A, The Dog House, Jay’s Original Hoagies, and Raphael’s Southern BBQ. Many 6th – 12th grade students as well as faculty and staff members have enjoyed lunch al fresco. The turnout has been great, but the best part is that each vendor donates a portion of their sales to the school! Their donations are used to fund teacher grants that directly provide much needed supplies and equipment for use in the classrooms. So if you’re ever in the area feel free to join us for lunch!
