It rather says that if there are no opportunities coming our way, then we have to find our way to seek opportunities. Now, does that sound strange? but that’s how it is. Suppose you are a student who really wants a scholarship, no institute is going to give you one unless you make your presence felt by excelling in some area – either academics or sports or even art. You just need to remember one thing; nothing is going to happen unless you put your plan into action and start working hard. Perseverance is required in any field. The glamour world brings glory to several actors, but we have known how it wasn’t all that glamorous after all. It all takes time and a pretty good time at that. Yet we have known the Patol Babus who do not merely play a role but live the role, however trivial it may be. I have understood for myself that success doesn’t come on a platter. Creativity blooms in the soil of calmness 23 Are opportunities the same for everyone? An Interview Well, the topic impressed me so much that I decided to write an article on the saying. Well, unfortunately for me, I just couldn’t even make a beginning. No amount of brainstorming or mind mapping would help me start. I almost gave up but the theme kept ringing in my ears…build a door. Then I decided I’d find out from the two men in my family, my father and grandfather, on how they dealt with opportunities. Here goes the conversation……. Me: What is your profession? Dad: I own a staffing and consulting service company related to the IT sector. EAGateways Services India Private Limited. Grandpa: I worked as an Engineer at national and international levels. Now I am an author. I have written thirty books so far. Me: Are you passionate about the work you do? Dad: Yes, to a large extent; but I feel that I am not doing to the best of my potential. Grandpa: Yes, I was very passionate about the work I did and the work I’m doing now. Me: Is this job the one you wanted? Dad: Not really! Certain times one’s passion and goal don’t match. Grandpa: I have always wanted to be an Engineer. I have served and succeeded, but being an author was definitely my passion. Me: Do you feel you ever missed any opportunity? Dad: Many times Grandpa: No, I don’t think I missed opportunities in life. Me. What advice do have for the readers on the saying 'If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door' Dad: There is nothing like an opportunity. Anything or everything that comes your way is to be viewed as an opportunity. Opportunities are created. Grandpa: Time is our opportunity and everybody should make use of this time with discipline. I had a great time discovering how to take everything as an opportunity. I’m sure you’d also want to go exploring …. Bhavishya.K, VIII C Equip yourself – Find your opportunity ‘If opportunity doesn’t come knocking, build a door’- so goes the saying. I say, build as many doors as you can now, while opportunity is practising social distancing, for when opportunity does make her rounds, she won’t wait for you to reply to her knock. One tap, and she’ll be gone, off to knock on the next door. What’s more, you will be wondering if she ever knocked at your door, until you realize your neighbour has grabbed it. Now you’re wondering if it's a passing phase ‘Oh dear! How delusional you can get!’ COVID isn’t going anywhere. It is here to stay, just like the pigeons in your balcony. Even if offices open, schools start and colleges fill up, everyone is going to come out with a new skill set. Your boss would be speaking German now, your colleague would have five art masterpieces to his name, the cat in the house below you can cartwheel, even the pigeons in your balcony can coo in four-time harmony! You would be left stranded in this world full of ‘improved’ and ‘skilled’ individuals, feeling like Thor in Avengers: Endgame. We don’t want that now, do we? If sweating it out in the kitchen is not your calling, try picking up a book. Well, maybe you don’t like sitting with a mind-numbing book that fails to occupy you. Start exercising. Get that blood pumping! It doesn’t have to be one of those professional dancing, even that tribal jungle dance would work in your favour. Alright, you don’t like panting for breath, then how about a movie marathon? You could review the movies you have watched. How about writing? All those theories, plots, sub-plots, character development, conspiracies you have, write them down. You could create your own world or create a different storyline that diverges from the original that you weren’t satisfied with. Well, I’m not sitting here and being your counsellor. Go and search ‘hobbies to cultivate’ or ‘skills to develop’ or anything along those lines, instead of ‘funny cat videos’, and you might end up finding that activity which interests you.
