Background Information In 1918 Belgium took over Rwanda. 15 years later in 1933 they enforced a law that made you have to carry around an identity card that identified you as either Tutsi or Hutu. Rwanda has two distinct ethnic groups, the Tutsi which made up about 14% of the population and the Hutu which make up about 85% of the population. There has always been a strain in the relationship between the Hutu and the Tutsi since Belgium ruled the country. In the late 1959 there was a Hutu revolution in which 150,000-300,000 Tutsi were forced out of the country. To counter the revolution the Rwandan Patriotic Front(RPF) is created of exiled Tutsi members. In 1990 the RPF started a civil war in Rwanda. There are many different religions there with the two most popular religions being Roman Catholic and Protestant.
Statistics 800,000 to 1 million Tutsi and a number of moderate Hutu were murdered 250,000 to 500,000 women were raped 300,000 children were murdered over 120,000 people were detained and accused of participating in the genocide
