Professor Amuda-Kannike Abiodun, SAN, FCIAP, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Kwara State University, who is also the IAMPS President in his welcome address, restated that the Institute of Arts Management Professional Studies (IAMPS), Nigeria was established to create focus and competent professional graduates with relevant skills to engage effectively in their respective professional practices. He emphasized that IAMPS’ curriculum is grounded in belief that management functions must support the organization’s mission and the needs of its artists and other stakeholders. Professor Abiodun further stressed that the essential difference between professional and academic credentials is that professional credentials are ‘warrants of competent’ or ‘warrants of expertise’ whereas, academic credentials are ‘certificates of
knowledge’. With professional designations, the certifying body is warranting that the certified worker (trade person or professional), has the essential knowledge and skills of a specified domain necessary for safe and appropriate practice of the trade or profession. With academic credentials, there is no such ‘warrant of competence’, an academic credential means that someone has successfully completed a particular course of study but not the certification of competent to practice a trade or profession. Professional designations are ‘warrants of competence’, it becomes important for certifying bodies to define specifically what certificates must be completed. Professional designations are always built upon practice analysis, which defines what certified individuals need to know or be able to do. Academic credentials are rarely based upon formal and systematic practice analyses. IAMPS is unique in its membership services as being an officially incorporated professional organization to provide assessment of competency to grant membership grades, it has also developed its curricula at different level that meet with the required demand of standards of the profession of Arts Management and Professional Studies. The IAMPS programmed comprehensive curriculum provides the skills students need not only in their first job but also in a job twenty years from now. In addition to shaping leadership abilities, IAMPS curriculum teaches students how to analyze problems and think strategically. The arts industry is constantly evolving, and at IAMPS, we don’t wait for the change to happen first in order to respond to it, we are proactive in becoming a part of change and inspiring innovation in our arts management field. Our current and relevant curriculum is updated on an ongoing basis to reflect essential industry shifts, and is vetted through national stakeholders as well as national arts leaders who provide valuable feedback on the needs of the arts field.
Our students, after the duration of their programme are awarded proficiency certificates as follows: Professional Membership Certificate, Professional Diploma Certificate, Professional Advance Diploma Certificate and Professional Post Graduate Diploma certificate respectively. Also, our students have an opportunity of being chartered in their chosen fields of studies before conversion examination into any of our partner universities. This is made possible through our partnership with several chartered professional bodies here in Nigeria and oversees whom we have merged their professional curricula with that of our partner universities, thereby given the students an opportunity of becoming professionals in their chosen career. This singular development which indeed makes it a dual bet that our graduates will have dual job opportunities; is already an avenue of poverty crushed out in their lives. “I therefore welcome you to the membership of IAMPS, where both academic certification and professional training are available to suitably qualify and experienced candidates in the field of Arts Management and Professional Studies” he concluded.
