PROFESSORBENEDICT IMEGWU CHUKWUMA IJOMAH My Father-in-Law, the Professor Emeritus, Elder Statesman, Consummate Politician, the People’s Vanguard, a Great Father & Grand Father, the Patriarch of the Ijomah family. MRS ANULI I recall, quite vividly, the first time I met Daddy. He IJOMAH exuded warmth and total acceptance of the Onye Igbo that his son had presented to him as his intended. Behind the jocular exterior, I could perceive a very keen mind and eclectic persona. I knew I had met a very interesting individual, and I was excited at the chance to regard him and learn from him. Later on, in a conversation with my father, I got to appreciate the extent of his academic and political pedigree. Daddy was a walking encyclopaedia; very knowledgeable in all subjects, physical and metaphysical. He had explored so many realms of knowledge, which gave him a broad/versatile outlook on life and its vicissitudes. Daddy was the real politician whose sole intent was to better the lot of the people; to better the lot of the Anioma Nation and Nigeria. He remained true to his convictions and was fearless in his pursuits of them. Daddy was the quintessential scholar, with a special affinity for the ancient Latin language. He loved the academia so much and proved his love with the
establishment of the Madonna International College, where he gave free rein to his ideas on education; personally schooling the children in the Latin language and other classics. Daddy was a Christian, fully dedicated to the Roman Catholic doctrine. Having travelled/studied far and wide, he remained resolute in his faith; leading mandatory daily family prayers, building and dedicating a Chapel to the glory of God. He was very accessible to all in need of food, shelter or just a listening ear. Daddy was a father. He stayed very much involved in the lives of his children; observed traditional family mealtimes, ensured study-hours were fully observed, spent hours talking with them, and shared his love for classical music with them. Daddy loved all his children and upheld the familial bond amongst them. He was a loving grandfather, playful, engaging and supportive of his grandchildren. Daddy was my father-in-law, a gentleman, my surrogate father after I lost mine. He always looked out for me, kept in touch and searched for me whenever I went off in a sulk. He knew how close I was with my father and tried his very best to fill that gap for me. I could never have had a better father-in-law. He was My Guy. Agidigbo of Aboh Kingdom! Omordi! Daddy! Grandpa! Jee nke oma. Onye bialu ije nwelu una. Ije gi n’uwa a bu ij’oma! Nakwulu Dinwenu anyi n’udo na oñu! Journey well, Daddy. You lived a glorious life. We love you and miss you but we are thankful for the time spent with you. You live on in our hearts and memories, forever. Adieu, Daddy. We will meet to part no more.
Daddy, You welcomed me to the family the first day you saw me. In your exact words, you said: ”this is our family and you are welcome”. I knew from that moment that I have found a second home. You were a man of peace, honour and principle. I will always remember your words of advice, encouragement and unwavering support. I thank you for raising a king I call my husband. It hurts deeply that you are no more but your love and peaceful memories will always be with us. I find solace in knowing that you have gone to be with the Lord. Naa n’udo Agidigbo!!! MRS. OBUM IJOMAH

HE WAS NO MEAN MAN: TRIBUTE TO PROF. BIC IJOMAH Ifirst came across the name, “Prof. BIC Ijomah” while serving as the Editor-in-Chief of The Roar Magazine of the SUG, UNN in 2005. I encountered the name again several times while researching for the first edition of my second book, “Freedom in Our Bones: The History of the Students Union Government, 1960-2004” in 2005. He granted me an interview in his office situated in the school he founded, “Madonna International College”, Asaba, Delta State, on December 8th, 2006. JEFF UNAEGBU I gave him the first draft of my manuscript which was then about 400 pages. I was a new graduate keen on getting more of the stories forming the origins of the Students Union Government of the University of Nigeria in 1960. The interview session lasted for more than two hours. He graciously revealed very vital information to me which is all contained in my book today. Then he did something very remarkable. He fished out his own draft of a three-year foundation story of the Union (1960-1963) which he began in 1963 when he was about to graduate from the University and handed the manuscript over to me! It was neatly typed with fonts indicating the use of a typewriter and it was yellow with age but well preserved. I carried it like a baby from Asaba to Nsukka. A short while later, I visited other pioneer members of the Students Union such as Sir GTG Toby (The Former Deputy Governor of Rivers State) while he was still serving at the State Government House, Port Harcourt, and Eze Sir KB Kele Okereke in his palace at Owerri. Eventually my book was ready for the press and I came back to Prof. Ijomah and got a foreword for the book. I was able to publish about 100 copies as I was leaving for NYSC with funds gotten from well-wishers. I brought a copy of the first imprint to Prof. BIC Ijomah and he became very concerned that I could not produce up to 1000 copies of the book, which was then billed at about 450,000 Naira. This was 2007 and I was just a fresh graduate hanging on an NYSC monthly allowance of 9800 Naira. Prof. BIC Ijomah rang his own publisher, Blue
Publisher, at Onitsha, to take over the production. He then gave me 200,000 Naira for the production. I was dumbfounded. With further funds raised from other quarters, I successfully got out 1000 copies of the book in 2008. One fateful day that same year at the CEC, Nsukka, I had a meeting with the Vice President of the then SUG, Onyinye Agbodike, and the then Information Officer of the SUG, Mr. Ben Itoyah. There was the idea to place a statue in front of the new Student Centre opposite Carver Building, which was renovated by the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo. I was already a staff member of the University. I told them that the best person whose bust should be sculpted was Prof. BIC Ijomah, since he was the first SUG president and the bust would serve as a pointer to the history of the Union. The idea was welcomed. Some weeks later, the Vice President of the Union, Onyinye Agbodike was able to organize a Cultural programme in which the golden fiber glass statue of Prof. B.I.C. Ijomah was unveiled. It was a glorious and emotional moment for Prof. B.I.C. Ijomah as he stood watching a representation of himself. He shed silent tears of joy. The programme attracted the then Governor of Delta State, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan. The Governor supported the Union financially. Other dignitaries followed suit. A planned launch of the book, Freedom in Our Bones: History of the SUG (1960-2004) alongside the unveiling of the statue was marred by lack of space and time for its concentrated presentation. The book was later launched that same year in Kano State during a courtesy visit to the then Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, by the UNAA. Prof. Ijomah later commissioned the sculptor to make a replica of his bust which stands now in his school, Madonna International College, reputed to be one of the best schools in Asaba with state-of-the-art facilities. I visited Prof. Ijomah several times in Asaba, and was there during his 75th birthday in 2013. That day, guests who came from afar, including myself, were all accommodated in hotel rooms, fully paid by Prof. BIC Ijomah himself. During the course of our telephone and face-to-face correspondences, a number of ideas occurred to me. One of them was the inclusion of his profile in the “Who’s Who in UNN” a book I complied with Prof. Animalu and Prof. Onuigbo, now selling on Amazon.
During a homecoming of unionists in 2016, there was another launch of the third edition of the book of the history of the Students Union, UNN and Prof. BIC Ijomah was present. He spoke to me later about the need to incorporate more detailing in the book. By this time, the book was 611 pages. In November 2019, Prof. Ijomah was present at the Prof. Ijomah Center for Policy Studies for a widely-publicized conference and academic inquisition on the nature, factors and causes of witchcraft. This was his last known recorded visit to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka….Adieu, great star. JEFF UNAEGBU, Author/ Film maker/ Chief Cinematographer, Institute of African Studies, UNN. AGIDIGBO, AN ICON IS GONE. What a great loss to the country, Delta State, Ndokwa nation and Aboh Obodoeze. You were a daddy, elder brother, a mentor all wrapped together in you. You will forever be missed. Continue to rest in the bossom of the Lord. ANTHONY ONYEKWELI

A TRIBUTE TO OUR PATRIARCH Agidigbo Sir, A man embellished with wisdom, full of virtue and morals, a great mentor who had integrity and substance. Daddy was an outstanding intellectual, he always knew the answer to almost everything. You were a father who impacted positively in the lives of everyone that crossed your path. Our father was a true leader with so many accomplishments. He left an indelible mark in politics and never compromised his virtues for whatever reason. The news of your demise brought an inexplicable feeling of despair to us; one accompanied by the sudden desire to journey down a memory lane. As little children in 2006, we were thrilled to see someone with such an aura, eloquence and charisma. Daddy we cannot begin to write everything you did for us but we remember how you would come to the dining to sit with us and make sure we ate our meals irrespective of your busy schedule. Continually endeavouring to make out ample time to listen to every one of our complaints just to reassure us that we were all equal and loved. Sir, you were indeed a man of honour, what else should a man live for if not for God and his fellow man. You taught us about God’s love and how to pray the rosary whole heartedly. What more can we ask of a father? Daddy was very passionate about our education as he saw it as ‘oil’ for a hitch free future in our country Nigeria. He held us in high esteem and bragged about us to his counterparts; the likes of late Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Obi Efeizomor, Chief Michael Ade Ojo (Elizade motors). No one is actually dead until the ripples and impact they caused in the world dies, and sir you caused more than a ripple everywhere you went. You were just like a strong yet gentle wave. It would take more than death to actually say you have left this world. You would be greatly missed and your invaluable memory remains in our hearts. This is not goodbye forever, your words of advice stil lingers in our hearts like a still small voice, and has constantly helped us forge ahead in life (‘we can, we will and we must succeed’). Agidigbo, you lived a great and fulfilled life worthy of emulation, we miss you as your absence has created a great void. However, through your devotion to our dear Mother Mary we are greatly consoled and we pray that you continue to rest in peace in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ until we meet again.
