Description: Highlights for Children Magazine

Ages 6-12

Description

You Loved it Then, Today’s Kids Love it Now!

Highlights for Children, often referred to simply as Highlights, is an American children's magazine. It began publication in June 1946, when Highlights magazine was first published. As times changed, so did kids, and so did we. Don’t worry, though — we’re still the same trusted children’s magazine in the most important ways. The experts at Highlights still know how to keep kids motivated with fun while they are learning and practicing the essential skills they will need in school. Since its inception Highlights has carried the slogan "Fun with a Purpose".

Skill-Building Fun

The Highlights motto is Fun with a Purpose. In every 40-page issue, kids explore new topics, investigate fascinating subjects and find out about the world. A Highlights magazine subscription for kids will bring them 12 months filled with stories, games, puzzles, riddles, science experiments, craft projects and activities that are as entertaining as they are educational.

Plus, Highlights never includes third-party advertising, so you can rely on it to be a commercial-free zone where your young reader can play, learn and just be a kid.

Highlights Kids Are Cool!

One of the founding principles of Highlights is that we believe in helping kids become their best selves: curious, creative, caring and confident. That’s why we keep up with the interests of kids today, while upholding time-honored values like respect, manners, fair play, kindness, honesty and more.

Goofus and Gallant are still prompting kids to think about right and wrong behaviors, and “Your Own Pages” motivates kids to be creative and share their work for possible publication. We love to see what Highlights kids can do!

When we invite people to talk about what matters to them and we listen closely, we begin to see a more complete picture. That’s what I like about “What I Wish You Knew About Me” (pages 30–31). Here, three kids with cerebral palsy talk about their lives—the parts that make them happy and the parts that frustrate them. Like all kids, they have big dreams—and great advice on how tomake dreams come true. I’m glad Meera,Emmett, and Levi shared their thoughts with us. They’ve helped us to see them as the fun, interesting people they are.I started thinking about what I wish people knew about me. And this is it: I am a little shy. I like to think about things before I speak. And, although I love being around people, I need a little time alone every day to recharge my batteries. Sometimes people think quiet, shy people are unfriendly—until they get to know us!Is there something about you that you wish people knew? You can share it with us in a letter or an e-mail. We love getting to know our readers.Your friend,This magazine of wholesome funis dedicated to helping children grow in basicskillsandknowledge, increativeness,in ability tothinkandreason, insensitivityto others in high, ideals and worthy ways of living—forchildren are the world s most important people’®.Photo of Meera by www DeepaJacob com...

ding a Helping Close to the water’s edge, a little fiddler crab shuffles along the sand. With four pairs of walking legs, he digs to make his burrow. He will live close to other fiddlers along the shore.Burrows are used for sleeping, mating, and keeping cool. Burrows are also a place to hide from enemies. Like all fiddlers, the little crab will leave the burrow during low tide. At high tide, the crab will plug the opening with sand or mud.Just as the little crab finishes making his burrow, a “floater” scrambles by. Floaters are male fiddler crabs looking for a new burrow. Sometimes neighboring crabs fight to increase their land a bit. But floaters want to take over completely.A floater that starts a fight tends to be larger than his rival. The fights usually last less than a minute, but a little crab may end up with a cracked shell. Or he may lose a limb. He could even be killed and eaten by the floater. But this little crab is in luck. His neighbor, a larger fiddler crab, wants to help keep the floater away. Sometimes large crabs leave their burrows to help smaller neighbors. But they do so only if they’re likely to win a fight. When Neighbors Step InDr. Pat Backwell with the Australian National University studies fiddler crabs. She wanted to find out when crabs help other crabs. She and Dr. Michael Jennions tracked 268 floaters until they saw them starting fights to steal a burrow. They recorded 17 cases of neighbors helping other crabs fight off floaters.Dr. Backwell says, “If there is a big size difference, there will basically be a lot of claw-waving. Then the smaller crab will back off.” She notes that when the floater is too big, a neighbor will refuse to help. But if the floater and the neighbor are about the same size, the two will start to fight.A fight might go like this: The helpful neighbor leaves his burrow. He taps the ground to warn off the floater. When the tapping fails, the neighbor lawPhoto by imageBROKER Alamy Stock Photo/.8MARCH2019

But the floater stands his ground. They start a pushing contest. Both crabs try to grab each other with their claws until the neighbor flips the floater off the ground. Crabs need to feel the ground under their feet to help them find their way. The floater becomes confused and scurries away. Then the little crab scurries back into his burrow. That burrow doesn t belong ’to you!Keeping the PeaceHelping can be dangerous .A helping crab s burrow may be ’taken The fighting can result .in losing a claw If a fiddler crab .loses a big claw the claw will ,grow back but it will take ,about six months.Still when large neighbors ,help they can prevent burrows ,from being stolen That often .means less fighting and a more peaceful neighborhood. Surprises, loud noises, and so on can make people and cats jittery.Like people, all cats are different. The experiences and personality of each individual cat help determine how it reacts when it’s startled or approached. For example, a cat who has had positive experiences or who has a confident personality may react calmly.Cats’ personalities form at a very young age—between two and seven weeks old, during what scientists call the “sensitive period of learning.” Things that happen then havea strong impact on a cat’s personality later in life. Its genetics also may makeit more sensitive to some things than to others.Super-fast reactions by cats may be asurvival strategy that would protect themfrom dangers in the wild. An instant regets it safely away from a bigger animcould hurt it. Even when a cat is safe fromthose dangers, it still has automatic responsesthat its ancestors developed over the years.12MARCH2019

My Corner of the By Judith L Roth.Art by Gladys JoseI’m in my room, scowling as I slowly get ready to head to the community theater with the rest of my family. I’m not in the mood for being onstage today.“Kirstie, come here,” my mom calls from down the hall.“What is it?” I call back.I find my mom outside the bathroom, holding a sopping-wet book about scouting. Henry, my new stepbrother, hovers nearby. He’s working on a complicated rope knot, as usual. My mother gives the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?”“Not on purpose,” I say. “It was already on the ledge, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out of the tub.”My mother glares at me, something she never did before I had a stepfamily. “You could have picked it up,” she says. “That would have been the kind thing to do.”Being kind didn’t used to be hard. But now that Henry and his dad have moved in with us, everything feels different. She hands the book to Henry and says, “We’ll get you a replacement copy, Henry. Are you kids ready to go?”“Yep,” says Henry. As Henry walks ahead of us to the car, my mom takes me aside. “This is our corner of the world now, Kirstie,” she says. “Let’s try to make it a good one.”“Henry s ’book was in the tub .Did you put it there?”16MARCH2019

WorldI nod but sigh. The community theater is busy when we get there. Theater used to be what my mom and I did together—one play a year for our special thing. WithHenry involved, it doesn’t seemso special anymore.Henry’s dad, who had arrivedearlier to help set up, is alreadyin costume. “Dear children,” hecalls in a theatrical voice, “cometo Father.”Such a ham. Fortunately,I thought he was a nice guyeven before he and my motherstarted dating.Unfortunately, I now have astepbrother to deal with.My mom helps Henry find hiscostume while I’m left to look formine on my own.Soon, it’s curtain time. I peekout at the audience and notice that the darkened theater is full. My heart beats faster.I forget my annoyance at Henry as the lead actress sings, “The hills are alive with the sound of music!” Nothing compares to show nights. Before long, I hear mycue to go onstage. As we kidsline up before Henry’s dad, who’splaying the part of our father,I realize how poorly I’ve tied thedrawstring on my skirt. I shouldhave asked my mom for help. And then, suddenly, my bowcomes untied and my skirtbegins to drop. In front ofhundreds of people! My armsare useless, full of books. It isnot a dream. It is horribly real.Laughter sprinkles throughoutthe audience, and even thoughI’m wearing shorts under myskirt, I can feel my face burstinto flames. Then Henry, beside me, comesto my aid. He fixes my costume, tying the drawstring with afancy knot. He makes a jokeabout me “not” knowing knots, and the audience laughs again. This time, the laughter feels OK.I get through the rest of the play, entering and exiting the stage and singing at all the right times. But my mind is in shock. At the end of the performance, after we’ve bowed and moved offstage, I fall into a chair like a giant sock monkey. One of my pretend brotherssays, “Can’t control yourcostume?”My face flames up again, buthe smiles as if my mistake wasno big deal. I see my mom in acrowd of chorus singers. Shewinks at me. My stepdad isshaking people’s hands. Passingme, he says, “Welcome to theclub, Kirstie. Now you’re a realactor.” Several singers nod likethey’ve been there.I find Henry and tap him onthe arm. I smile at him. Kindly.“Thanks,” I say. “For, you know.”He grins. “Knota problem.”Maybe it won’t be so bad tohave a new person in my cornerof the world after all.Now that Henry and his dad have moved in everything ,feels different.“Thanks I say ,”.“For you know,.”The audience laughs again.

Shabbat Sammy’s family had gone to Grandma and Grandpa’s for Shabbat dinner. Sammy had to stay home with the baby-sitter, Mrs. Blum, because he was getting over a cold. Now Sammy had nobody to talk to, except Mrs. Blum. She was nice, but she didn’t say much.Sammy’s parakeet, Bertie, talked. But he said only words Sammy had taught him: Hello. Good-bye. Happy birthday. Bertie Bird.“Hello, Bertie Bird,” Sammy said.Bertie fluffed his green feathers. He cocked his yellow head. “Bertie Bird,” he said. “Hello. Good-bye. Happy birthday.”Every Shabbat, Sammy’s parents wished Sammy Shabbat Shalom, which means “Sabbath Peace.” And Sammy said “Shabbat Shalom” to them.Every Shabbat, Sammy would say “Shabbat Shalom” to Bertie too. “Shabbat Shalom, Bertie Bird,” Sammy would say.Bertie would say “Bertie Bird.”Sammy asked Mrs. Blum for a little piece of apple for Bertie to eat.Mrs. Blum brought a piece of apple from the kitchen. Sammy fastened it in the cage. Bertie nibbled at the apple.Mrs. Blum put the Shabbat candlesticks on the table. She said, “I will cook a nice supper for us. Then I will light the Shabbat candles.”It was Shabbat, but Sammy’s mother wasn’t there to light the candles. It was Shabbat, but Sammy’s father wasn’t there to place his hands on Sammy’s head and give him the Shabbat blessing. It was Shabbat, but his family wasn’t home to say the blessings over the wine and the challah, the special loaf of Shabbat bread. It was Shabbat, but nobody in Sammy’s family was there to wish him “Shabbat Shalom.”By Joan Strauss Art by Merrill Rainey•with Bertie BirdSammy had to stay home with the baby sitter because -he was getting over a cold.28MARCH2019

So I will wish youShabbat Shalom.”He opened Bertie Bird’s cage and held out his finger. “Shabbat Shalom.”Bertie Bird hopped off his perch and onto Sammy’s finger. He cocked his yellow head. I want people to know that it is hard for me to have CP (cerebral palsy). Before I was born, I had a stroke that made my right hand not work as well as my left. My right leg is affected too.My difference affects me in a lot of ways, like I am not as independent as I would like to be. Even making myself a snack can be hard. Sometimes I don’t feel that I’m good at anything, like soccer or video games. This makes me feel angry and sad, and I worry that that will affect my friendships.I have done a lot of treatments to help with things that are hard for me. I’ve done physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and hippotherapy (working with a therapist while riding a horse). Last summer, I went to magic camp, which was fun because it was therapy and magic mixed together. We learned the magic, then performed it for our parents. It worked! We all felt like we were just doing magic, not therapy. I made friends there with kids who had paralysis. Hanging out with them felt amazing because we had gone through the same thing. One of my favorite activities is CP soccer. When we found out that the U.S. didn’t have a CP league, we started one! This made me realize that I may not be the best at non-CP soccer, but I am pretty good by CP standards. One teammate just made it to the paralympic national team! I want to do that when I get older. If I were giving advice to the younger kids on the team, I would say that growing up with CP is hard. Sometimes you’ll be sad and sometimes you’ll be frustrated. When that happens, find something you really like and work hard to become good at it. That’s what I try to do.Find something you really like and work hard to become good at it.Emmett PennaAge 7 • New YorkI like to take bubble baths when the bubbles are so high. ADangerousThe three toed sloth risks its life to do-...what?By Linda ZajacBitingantsskitterasDr.JonathanPaulipullshimselfontothebranchesofacecropiatree.Underanumbrella-shaped canopy oflongleaves, heslidescloserto the slow-moving animal:a three-toed sloth.Dr. Pauli’s expert eye hasspotted the sloth from below, even though green algae livingin its fur make it blend in withthe leaves. He scoops the drowsyanimal into a burlap sack, thenclambers back down the tree.“It’s like picking apples,” he says.Dr. Pauli is a scientist atthe University of Wisconsin–Madison. He travels to CostaRica to study the world’s slowestmammal. “They move slightly, from branch to branch,” he says.“They’re not like other wildlifeof their body size, which rangeacross a big area in a day.”He wanted to solve a mystery:why does the three-toed slothclimb to the ground to go to thebathroom? Most animals thatlive in trees poop from whereverthey happen to be. Even thissloth’s closest relative, thetwo-toed sloth, drops itsdroppings from above. The three-toed sloth seemsable to spend its whole life inthe safety of the trees. But thetrek to the ground takes theanimal out of hiding, increasingits risk of becoming a mealfor eagles, wild cats, and dogs. Many animals risk their lives tofind food or protect their young, but not to go to the bathroom. The trip also seems a waste ofscarce energy. The sloth lives oncecropia leaves, which containvery little energy. eat a lot of leaves to survive. It is famous for saving energywith its slow-moving habits. Still, the sloth burns a lot of energyduring a bathroom break. These Moths Need SlothsOne clue was moths. For years, scientists knew that moths livein the sloths’ fur. “As sloths move, the moths’ wings get tattered andfrayed,” says Dr. Pauli. “They getso beaten up within the fur thatthe moths lose their ability forlong-distance flight.”Once a sloth is on the ground,it releases a pile of pellets. Theinsects drop onto the pellets andlay their eggs. “Female moths usethese dung piles as nurseries,”Dr. Pauli says. When the eggshatch, they become larvae. “Theyfeed on dung. Then they emergeas moths and fly up into thecanopy to colonize a sloth.”It looked as if the slothhelped the moth, but the mothdid not help the sloth. Dr. Pauliwondered how the moth mightsomehow help the sloth. If it did,the bathroom break might beworth the risk.Green GrowthTo find out, the team looked at other clues. Moths aren’t the only things living on a three-toed sloth. Algae also grow in its fur.Dr. Pauli and his colleagues captured both two- and three-toed sloths. Using a special vacuum, they collected each sloth’s moths, then counted and weighed the insects. They collected algae from the fur and checked each sloth’s diet bystudying its stomach contents. The researchers discoveredthat three-toed sloths had moremoths, richer fur, and morealgae than two-toed sloths. Mosttwo-toed sloths carried four orfive moths. Three-toed slothshad several times more. Slothswith more moths had fur withmore nutrients, possibly frommoths dying and decomposing inthe fur, so algae thrived there.Stomach samples showed thatthe sloths had eaten some of thealgae, a source of energy.Dr. Pauli and his co-workershave discovered that three-toedsloths, the moths, and the algaedepend on one another tosurvive. When sloths climb downthe trees, they carry the mothsto a place where their eggs willsurvive. In return, the mothsenrich the sloths’ fur, so a gardenof algae grows. Sloths eat thehigh-energy algae, which alsohelps them blend into the canopy, protecting them from predators. Some forest animals have to befast and fierce to survive. For thesloth, the moth, and the algae, aslow pace seems to work just fine.Another Mystery Solved?Zoos and sanctuaries have a hard time keeping three toed sloths healthy -,according to Dr Jonathan .Pauli Usually when we . “,bring animals into captivity ,we clean them up and try to remove all the living things in their fur he says But ,”.washing the sloths could remove the moths and algae that they need.Green algae also live in the fur of the three toed sloth-.Did the moths help their sloths?

Ask izona®Pushing Throughthe Scary PartBy Lissa Rovetch • Art by Amanda MorleyDear Anxious,I still remember how queasy I felt doing some things for the first time—when I acted in a play, when I rode a horse, when I tried sushi. You’d think that after a bunch of first times the butterflies-in-stomach feeling would disappear. But a month ago, here’s what happened.“Please come to chess club tomorrow,” Mareya said to me at the end of school one day. “I know you’re going to love it!”“I’ve never even played chess,” I said. “It seems super hard.”“I went last week, and it was extremely fun!” said Mareya.“Really?” I said, not convinced.“Really. Plus, the club needs more people to keep it going.” Mareya smiled. “Listen. If you try it, I’ll do my silly rabbit dance in the middle of recess.”I laughed. “Hmm. In front of everyone? It’s a deal!”When I arrived at home, I searched our game shelves. I pulled out checkers, dominoes, and cards. Finally, at the very bottom of the pile, I found a tattered box with a chessboard and plastic chess pieces.I pulled out a sheet of instructions. Knights, rooks, bishops, pawns, a king, and a queen—each piece had a special starting place and its own way of moving. I stared at the board. My heart sank. I couldn’t possibly memorize all the rules in time. Everyone in chess club was going to think I was clueless! That night, I dreamed I was in a giant chess game, and the queens, kings, and knights were laughing at me. Even the knights’ horses were snickering! The next day, I told Mareya I was having second thoughts.“Please don’t back out,” she said. “Remember our deal.”“I would like to see your silly rabbit dance,” I said, smiling. After school, I found the chess club’s meeting room and went inside. I looked around, but Mareya was nowhere in sight! To make matters worse, I didn’t know a single person in the room. Butterflies filled my stomach as I started to head toward the door.“Hi!” said a friendly woman. “I’m Ms. Martinez.”“I’m Arizona,” I said. “I was “ ’I ve never even played chess.”40MARCH2019

supposed to meet a friend, but I don’t see her. I’d better get going.”“Well, as long as you’re here, why don’t you sit with Joe and Jess and watch their game?”I didn’t want to be rude, so I sat down. I’ll just stay for a minute, I thought.“Ha! Got your knight!” said Jess, grabbing one of Joe’s pieces.“Two can play at that game.” Joe laughed, nudging a rook onto a square and taking one of Jess’s pieces off the board.“Um, how did you do that?” I asked.“The rooks—those are the castles—move in a straight line,” said Joe.“Yeah, we’ll show you all the moves,” said Jess.By the end of the hour, I was actually starting to have fun. Chess wasn’t like any game I had played before. The next day, at recess, Mareya ran up to me. “I forgot I had a dentist appointment yesterday afternoon. My mom picked me up and I didn’t have time to tell you! Will you ever forgive me?”I smiled. “Believe it or not, I ended up having a good time!”“That’s awesome!” said Mareya. “So you’ll come next week?”“As long as you teach me a few more chess moves first,” I said. “Oh, and don’t forget our deal!”“Forget? I wouldn’t dream of it.” She giggled. And right there, in the middle of recess, she did her silly rabbit dance. A bunch of kids broke out in applause.I’ve been a member of chess club ever since. Who knows? One day I may even compete in a tournament. If I do, I’ll probably feel super nervous again. The difference now is that I know I can push through that scary, heart-racing, want-to-run-away part and be OK.So, dear Anxious, remember that you’re an old pro at facing “firsts.” Since you were a baby, you’ve been learning new skills, trying new foods, and going places you’ve never been before. You already know from experience that if you just keep moving forward, the scared feeling will almost definitely disappear—and you may even have a fantastic time.Ciao for now,Arizona“Believe it or not ,I ended up having a good time!”“Why don t you sit ’with Joe and Jess and watch their game?”My heart sank .Everyone would think I was clueless.
