The Big Spartan/Little Spartan program has had only positive effects on the community and will continue to do so for years to come. Peer Mediation This is the sixth year that Peer Mediation has been at work in our school. Students who are role models, understanding, and good listeners sign up to become Peer Mediators. This entails an intense three-day training session at the BCIU where the Mediators gain insight into problem solving, anger management, and other important people skills. When Wyomissing students enter into a dispute, peer mediators are there with “open arms” to help the situation. Led by Mrs. Lally, Mrs. Barletta, and Ms. Long, Peer Mediation has become a frequently used service here at Wyo. up Pump the VOLUME Spartan Club Thanks to the Spartan Club, Wyo pumped up the volume at this year’s sports Pep rallies. Under the direction of Mr. Kolva, the athletic director here at Wyo, students organized the Pep rallies to get the Spartan spirit pumping throughout the student body. Although the Spartan Club has only been in existence for two years, the excitement and support for Wyo sports has grown. It is the goal of this group, whose members are Spartan athletes, to build the student body’s enthusiasm for their fellow peers athletic ability and to encourage them to support them in their many victories. Wyo 5 Live Homeroom teachers found themselves pumping up the volume on their TV’s while Wyo 5 Live is broadcasting. Students interested in the field of communications are involved with the morning announcements. Wyo 5 Live broadcasts every morning throughout the school to inform students about the day’s events. Whether they are working behind-the-scenes or on- camera, students learn about technology and broadcast. Advised by Mr. Farrara, Wyo 5 Live has made many new improvements to the club and the program. The Ultimate Athlete Joel Goodling became Sports announcer updating the school on the Spartans victories and announced game times and locations. He also added some zest to the morning with “Ultimate Athlete Sport Challenges” where he took on Wyo’s best athletes. Kara Hopkins was the winner to join Joel on the “Ultimate Date” which was the result of a fund raiser for Big Brother/ Big Sister. Wyo 5 Live also acts in connection with BCTV to produce “Bridging the Generation Gap,” which gives the students a valuable learning opportunity. Voices (>c/7vvy Chorus As the voices ofthe Wyomissing Area Concert Choir, Chorale, or Camerata carry, goose-bumps are not uncommon. Under the direction ofMrs. Sharon Luyben, the chorus performs a Winter concert and Spring concert. Chorale and Camerata extend their talent beyond the walls of Wyo to Nursing homes, malls, and other places and occasions. The chorus has grown to be enormous. Almost 200 students are involved in the music program adding their sound to the beautiful harmony that the chorus always emits. Unfortunately, because of the snow, the annual Easton Choral Adjudication was canceled this year, but without dispute, Wyomissing would have gotten their usual “Superior” ranking. Wyomissing has the honor of boasting some very gifted music students who, year after year, acheive places in counties, districts, regionals, and even states. National Latin Honor Society National Latin Honor Society members demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for the Latin language by receiving an “A” average in Latin for two consecutive. At the end of the school year, students who have achieved this difficult task are inducted into the Peter T. Cellucci Chapter ofthe National Honor Society. Wyomissing’s chapter is named after our prinicipal, Mr. Cellucci, because of his honorable dedication to the Latin language. SLEDGEHAMMER Girls’ Tennis Berks County certainly suffered from the Spartan Sledgehammer. To call this season exciting would be an understatement. The girls took every title this year including Division Champs, County Champs, District Champs and sent six players to states. The talent of the individual players was phenominal and the numerous trophies and medals that the girls won boasts just that. Melissa Reed and Kelsey Levan were second in Doubles at Districts while Rebby Sutherland placed fourth in the Singles Division at Districts and Freshman Grace Blakely was Singles District Champion. When the team advanced six players to states, all six made it to the semi-finals and medaled. Melissa and Kelsey placed fourth in doubles, Rebby placed fourth in singles and Grace placed third in singles. They topped off the best weekend in the history of Wyomissing sports with a state championship by doubles partners, Courtney Jungjohann and Katie Jaxheimer. Although there is no states competition for girls tennis yet, no one will dispute that Wyo would have added that title to their long list of victories. The girls and Coaches Gyomber and Herb created a fantastic and memorable season that they nor Wyo will soon forget.
