การอา นเลขจํานวนนบั Cardinal Number 1. เลข 0 ถาใชในความหมายคณิตศาสตร และอุณหภมู ใิ หอ านวา zero (ซโิ ร) เชน * It is eight degree below zero. (อุณหภูมิลบ 8 องศา) 2. เลข 0 ถานาํ มาใชก บั หมายเลขโทรศพั ท ใหอ านวา “โอ” เชน * Dial 02-547-8972 (อา นวา oh two five four seven eight nine seven two) 3. คําวา hundred, thousand และ million ใชเ ปน รูปเอกพจน เมอ่ื มีจาํ นวนนับนําหนาเพราะคําเหลานี้ตางก็ใชเ ปน คุณศพั ท เชน * Three hundred students นกั ศึกษา300 คน(อยา ใช three hundreds student) * Five million hens ไกห าลานตัว (อยาใช five millions hen)

แตถ า คําท้งั 3 นี้นํามาใชอ ยา งคาํ นาม และตามดว ย of จะใชเปน รูปพหูพจนเสมอ * I have reminded you of this case hundreds of times. (ผมไดเตือนคุณใหคิดถงึ เรือ่ งน้ตี งั้ หลายรอยครงั้ แลว นะ) * There are thousands of foreigners to visit here every year. (มชี าวตางประเทศหลายพนั คนมาเท่ียวท่ีนที่ กุ ๆ ป) * Millions of people are unemployed each year. (แตล ะปม ีคนตกงานหลายลานคน) 4. เลขจํานวนนบั ตง้ั แต 100 ขนึ้ ไป ใหอานโดยใช and มาเชอื่ ม สว นจํานวนหลกั สิบ ต้งั แต 21-99 ใหใ ช hyphen (-) มาค่ัน เชน 21 = twenty-one 335 = three hundred and thirty-five 1,586 = one thousand five hundred and eighty-six

5. เมื่อเลขทง้ั Cardinal และ Ordinal มาขยายนามพรอมกนั ใหใ ช Ordinal นําหนา Cardinal เสมอ เชน *The first three students are Americans. (นักศึกษา 3 คนแรกเปนชาวอเมรกิ ัน) * The last two pictures are very ugly. (2 ภาพสดุ ทา ยนั้นนา เกลียดมาก 6. หนา หนงั สอื (page) หรือบทท่ี (lesson หรอื chapter)ใน หนังสอื ใหอ านแบบ จาํ นวนนับธรรมดา เชน * page 10 = page ten * lesson 8 = lesson eight * part III = part three แตจะใช the first lesson, the fifth chapter, the second part กไ็ ด

7. การอา นช่อื พระมหากษัตริย พระราชินี หรือพระสันตะปาปา ตองอานอยาง Ordinal ลําดับท่ตี ลอดไป เชน • King Rama V = King Rama the fifth พระราชาธิบดีท่ี 5 • Queen Elizabeth II = Queen Elizabeth the second พระราชนิ เี อลซิ าเบธท่ี 2

หลักการเขียน Ordinal Number 1. ลําดบั ท่ี 1-3 ท่ี 1 = first ที่ 2 = second ที่ 3 = third 2. เลขจาํ นวนนบั ทําเปน เลขลําดับทไี่ ดโ ดย การเติม th ลงทายคํา เชน 15 = fifteen ท่ี 15 = fifteenth 24 = twenty-four ที่ 24 = twenty-fourth 3. เลขจํานวนนบั ท่ลี งทา ยดวย y ทําเปนเลขลําดับที่ไดโดยเปล่ียน y ใหเ ปน ie แลวเติม th ลงทายคํา เชน 20 = twenty ที่ 20 = twentieth 30 = thirty ท่ี 30 = thirtieth

4. เลขลําดับท่ตี ้งั แต 20 เปน ตนไป ถา ลงทายดวย 1 ใหใช first ตามหลงั เชน ที่ 21 เขียนตัวยอวา 21st อานวา twenty-first ที่ 31 เขียนตัวยอวา 31st อานวา thirty-first ถา ลงทา ยดว ย 2 ใหใ ช second ตามหลงั เชน ที่ 22 เขียนตัวยอวา 22nd อา นวา twenty-second ท่ี 32 เขยี นตัวยอวา 32nd อา นวา thirty-second ถา ลงทายดวย 3 ใหใ ช third ตามหลงั เชน ที่ 23 เขียนตัวยอวา 23rd อานวา twenty-third ท่ี 33 เขยี นตัวยอวา 33rd อานวา thirty-third

1 8 Fractions ( เศษสว น) เวลาอานใหถ ือหลกั เกณฑดังนี้ เศษ ใชเ ลขจํานวนนับ (Cardinal Number) สว น ใชเ ลขลําดับท่ี (Ordinal Number) และตอ งมี hyphen (-) มาคั่นระหวางเศษ และสวนเสมอ ⅛ = one - eighth ¾ = one - quarter/ one - fourth ⅓ = one - third ½ = one - half

Note ขอ สงั เกต สามารถใช a แทน one ได เชน ½ อาจอานวา a half หรือ one half กไ็ ด 1 อานวา a hundred หรอื one hundred 100 ถา เศษมากกวาหนงึ่ ใหเ ตมิ s ที่เลขสวนตลอดไป เชน ⅔ = two - thirds ⅝ = five - eights

ถา เศษมีตวั เลขตง้ั แตสองตวั ขน้ึ ไป หรือตงั้ แตห ลกั สิบข้ึนไป นยิ ม ใช over แทน hyphen (-) ระหวางเศษและสวน เชน 32 51 = thirty-two over fifty-first 749 = seven hundred and forty-nine 4000 over four thousandths ถา เศษตัวน้นั มีจํานวนมารวมอยดู ว ย หรือเปนเศษสว นจํานวน คละ ใหอา นจํานวนเตม็ กอ นดวยเลขจํานวนนับธรรมดา แลว จึงตาม ดวย and แลว จึงอานเศษสว นตามหลกั การอานปกติ เชน 41 = four and a half 2 8 1 = eight and a quarter 4 =5 8 five and eight fourteenths 14

Decimal เลขทศนิยม เลขหนา จดุ ทศนิยม อานแบบเลขจํานวนนบั ธรรมดา จุด อานวา Point เลขหลงั จุด อา นทลี ะตัว เชน 1,547.035 อา นวา one thousand, five hundred and forty-seven point oh three five 0.125 = zero point one two five 0.33 = zero point three three 2.3 = two point three

House (การอา นเลขบา น) เลขบา นปกตนิ ิยมอา นเรยี งตัว สวนเลขศนู ย ใหออกเสยี งวา oh และถาเลขบา นน้ันมีทับ (/) จะใช slash หรอื stroke กไ็ ด เชน 650 = six five oh 276/3 = two seven six slash/stroke three ถา เลขบา นน้ันมีเลขถึงหลักพนั นยิ มอานเปนจํานวนหลักทลี ะคู เชน 3250 = thirty-two fifty 4326 = forty-three twenty-six

Telephone number (เลขหมายโทรศัพท) เราใชเลขจํานวนนบั ธรรมดา (Cardinal Number) ใน การอานเลขหมายโทรศพั ท ซงึ่ จะอานเรียงตัวไป เลข 0 จะออกเสยี งวา oh หรอื zero ก็ได ในกรณที เี่ ลขหมายโทรศพั ทล งทา ยดว ยเลขศูนยสองตัว จะอานเปน double oh หรอื อา นเรยี งตามปกตกิ ็ได หรืออา นลงทา ย ดว ย hundred หรอื thousand กไ็ ด Tel. 037-321430 = oh three seven three two one four three oh Tel. 0-2546-2500 = oh two five four six two five hundred (five double oh)

Interesting Number 0 การอานเลข 0 0 อานวา oh ในกรณีท่ี 1. after a decimal point หลงั จุดทศนิยม เชน 9.02 อา นวา nine point oh two. 2. in bus or room numbers เลขหมายรถประจาํ ทาง และเลขหอง เช Bus 602 อานวา Bus six oh two. Room 101 อา นวา Room one oh one. 3. in phone number เลขหมายโทรศัพท เชน 0-2548-3147 อา นวา oh two five four eight three one four seven. 4. in year ป ค.ศ เชน 1906 อา นวา nineteen oh six.

0 อานวา nought ในกรณที ่อี ยูกอ นจดุ ทศนยิ ม เชน 0.06 อานวา nought point oh six. 0 อานวา zero ในกรณที ่ี 1. in temperature ใชอ านอุณหภูมิ เชน -10 C อานวา 10 degree below zero. 2. for the number ใชกบั ตวั เลข 0 อานวา zero 0 อานวา nil ในกรณที ี่ ใชกบั เกมส football เชน Chelsea 2 Manchester United 0 อานวา Chelsea two Manchester United nil. 0 อานวา love ในกรณที ี่ ใชก ับการเลนกีฬา เทนนสิ เชน 40-0 อานวา forty love. เลข 12 สามารถบอกเปน โหลได เชน 12 eggs. = A dozen eggs. หรอื 6 eggs = half a dozen eggs.

Mathematics + plus 3 + 4 = 7 three plus four is seven. - minus 12 - 8 = 4 twelve minus eight is four. × multiplied by 15 x 7 = 35 five multiplied by seven is thirty - five. ÷ divided by 10 / 5 = 2 ten divided by five is two. = equal to dozen = 12 a dozen is equal to twelve. < less than 10 < 12 ten is less then twelve. > greater than 20 > 10 twenty is greater then ten.
