Atty. Jonas Cabochan Is new San Beda University Representative to the NCAA Management Committee By Joffre M. Alajar Who else has the utmost interest of San Beda University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) arena, than our very own full-blooded Bedan Atty. Jonas Florentino L. Cabochan (GS'79 ,HS'83, and Law '94). Mancom Rep. Jonas is the incumbent Vice President of the San Beda University Alumni Association, and was once its three-term President. Atty. Jonas, a private practitioner, also belongs to the prestigious roster of faculty of the College of Law, and board trustee of the San Beda College Alumni Foundation and the San Beda LawAlumniAssociation. More than his impressive credentials both as a student leader and professional lawyer, Jonas, unknown to many, is an avid supporter of the NCAA, and such can be traced back to his student days. This youthful-looking Bedan believes so much in this premier athletic association for its being able to contribute significantly to the well-being and life-long success of our young Filipino athletes. In a recent interview, Atty. Jonas is filled with optimism as he looks forward to a more exciting NCAA Season '97 amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He sees his entry to the NCAA Management Committee as a huge honor that carries an equally enormous responsibility of raising the bar of excellence of the NCAA, with San Beda taking a more pro-active role in ensuring that this widely patronized athletic association will be able to achieve its mission of developing sportsmanship and camaraderie among its member schools through fair sports competitions, and deepen its identity as an almost century old institution. Being an avid supporter of all the NCAA competitions, Atty. Jonas has been a witness to myriad challenges and conflicts in many NCAA event competitions , and he believes that such can be faced head on if all stakeholders would scale up their observance of all sporting events' rules and regulations to make the NCAA a truly venerable institution worth emulating , especially by today's young , idealistic and promising athletes. With Atty. Jonas Cabochan occupying the San Beda top seat, expect this outstanding Bedan to really show the way to making the NCAA the most highly regarded athletic community in the country today. His Bedan family members are one in wishing him all the best! 29

SBUAA launches Bedan-trepreneur series By Joey Alvero Like any other organization, the SBUAA programs and plans have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, this global occurrence would not stop the SBUAA from organizing relevant and meaningful activities that would leave a significant impact to members of the Bedan community and the Filipino nation. JOEY ALVERO One such activity was the Bedan-trepreneur Webinar Series held successfully last December 12. January 24, 2021 To the San Beda University Alumni Association - East Coast Officers and Directors Greetings of Peace! On behalf of the people of Oas, Albay, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the officers and directors of the San Beda University Alumni Association - East Coast for your valuable donation to the relief drive initiated by San Beda University, for the families recently hit hard by typhoon Rolly. being from the same town, I took the initiative to be in charge of the acquisition and packing of relief goods using the funds collected amounting to Php 241,629.85. The funds were used to buy sacks of rice, eggs, canned goods and other essential items. Last November 29, 2020, I visited Oas, Albay to distribute the above goods which benefited almost 3,000 families. It saddened me to see barangays submerged in lahar flood, with houses devastated by the turbulent winds. I will be visiting again Oas, Albay this coming February 2021 for the second wave of relief goods distribution. Undoubtedly, it will take time before the town can fully recover from such massive destruction. Your kind assistance, however, provided the people with the much needed comfort, and gave them hope, so in their brokenness, they can once again pick up the pieces, and start anew their respective lives. Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, we express our endless gratitude to you. May our good Lord bless you and your family even more! Very truly yours, Dr. Christian Bryan Bustamante Treasurer, San Beda University Alumni Association Dean, San Beda University College of Arts and Sciences Thank you. 31

Bedan nurse recalls surviving Covid-19 in the US Subhead: 'Nursing for me then was a need, now it has become my vocation' By Luis Carlo San Juan Luis Carlo San Juan Marcial Reyes had a promising career in politics. Back in college at San Beda he was very active in both school and national politics; he even brought the late senator Miriam Defensor Santiago to school for a talk, and was the PRP Youth (People's Reform Party) leader in Manila. He worked for Sen. Edgardo Angara as public affairs specialist and media relations officer after graduating from San Beda with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Letters back in 1996. Reyes traveled the world with Senator Angara while the latter This realization of Reyes happened was promoting the Absentee Voting and Dual Citizenship back in 2000 when the nursing profession was starting to be in bills, and that was when Reyes realized he could still serve his high demand. country even in a foreign land. “I have seen the hardships of Filipinos in Hong Kong, Japan, US, Spain and in the Middle Reyes eventually got tired of politics and was looking for a sign East,” Reyes said. “I consider them to be our new heroes. I can if he should shift career paths. In 2003, he was browsing the still be a Filipino and live outside of the country, but if I do leave papers and saw an ad on San Beda launching the College of the Philippines, I would need to refocus my career and make Nursing. He was 30 then and he still decided to pursue it, and myself in demand.” 32

even took the CON entrance exam. He was the first 33 second-courser to apply, and obviously he was the oldest in his class. He recalled how he used to keep a low profile in class, “They used to call me 'Tatang,'” he said. But Reyes still kept that political fire and became the college's first Student Body president. He juggled working for Senator Angara and studying nursing. In 2005 Reyes graduated from nursing and passed the board December that same year. He took additional nursing exams and in 2006 he flew to the US, originally as tourist but eventually became a migrant. “I walked in into several hospitals and was offered a job in three different hospitals.” Reyes eventually chose Citrus Valley Health Partners-Queen of the Valley Medical Center in West Covina, California. In 2009, Reyes took his Masters of Science in Nursing at Walden University. Fast forward to 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic was hitting every part of the globe, Reyes lamented how the flights from Asia weren't banned yet, and the health staff wasn't fully

protected in hospitals early on. “We were not ready, we work around that time without masks.” Reyes started feeling the symptoms back in March. “I was feeling fatigue.” Eventually three nurses from his ward got infected but he became the most severely ill. In his interview with CBS News, Reyes recalled how he was confined in the hospital for 30 days, and for 11 of those days, he was in a medically-induced coma and was attached to a ventilator. “Because my lungs were collapsing already,” he said. He realized that he had a near-death experience where he saw his parents and his brother, but he told them that he had to continue living for his five-year-old son and wife. Fortunately, Reyes recovered. He was discharged from the hospital lastApril 14 and went back to work May 15. He was preparing to go to work as he gave this interview via Facebook Messenger. \"I convinced my doctor to release me early as I felt the need to go back to work.” Reyes talked about how nurses are feeling drained and sick. “I felt I needed to go back and help.” It has been nine months since he recovered and Reyes now admitted that he has lost much of his endurance. “I used to work 16 hours almost every day without any problems, now 12 hours is too long and tiring.” Other than that and the feeling of anxiety, Reyes reassured us that he is fine. Even after his near-death experience, Reyes is far from slowing down in a profession he's had for 15 years now. And now it has become his advocacy to educate people more about the virus and about the need for safe nursing practice. “Nursing for me then was a need, now it has become my vocation,” he said. 34

SBUAA and SBU Medicine lead fundraising for health workers at Quirino Hospital; gather over a million pesos By Joffre M. Alajar The SBUAA led an anti- Covid19 fund drive for health care professionals based at the Quirino Memorial Center (QMMC). This fund drive raised P1,089,093. coming mostly from Bedan alumni and friends here and abroad, led by SBUAA President Atty. Jimmy Buhain and SBCAF trustee Jorge Ortoll. Funds were also raised by the various SBUAA alumni chapters led by the SBUAA-East Coast Chapter and the different batches. Bedan Rep. Jonjon Ferrer of Cavite donated a substantial amount for this fund drive. Dean Fernandino Fontanilla of the SBU College of Medicine was simply overwhelmed by the full support provided by the SBUAA officers and members in the fundraising project. Funds were used to acquire personal protective equipment (PPE), surfical masks, hazmat suits, Bionare ULPA heap filter, and Korean N-95 masks for use of our health care professionals at QMMC. It will be noted that QMMC is the hospital base of our SBU medical school. President Buhain expressed appreciation to the many donors who supported this worthwhile SBCAA project under his leadership, hoping that whatever funds gathered would assist the health workers in their mission to save lives due to the deadly Covid19 pandemic. 35

RICARCHITO BUSTO MANERA, M.D. The 1st Bedan Medical Professional to receive the COVID-19 Vaccination By Joffre M. Alajar “I wish this experience to deepen everyone's understanding and better appreciation of this breakthrough in the COVID-19 pandemic”, shared Dr. Ricarchito Manera, when interviewed by this writer- friend, an hour after he received the Pfizer/Bio Tech COVID-19 vaccination. Dr. Chito, as he is endearingly called by peers, associates and patients, received his first and second dosages last December 19, 2020 and January 9, 2021, respectively. The inoculation was performed on Dr. Chito at the Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL, USA, where he is a well-loved attending physician in pedriatic hematology oncology for many years now. Manera belongs to SBU GS '72 and HS '76, where he graduated with top honors. He went to the UST Medical School where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He took further studies abroad with flying colors, and decided to migrate and practice his profession in the USA. Today, Dr. Manera is highly regarded as a medical specialist on child-cancer and a part-time lecturer-researcher. Proudly, he is listed among Chicago's top pedriatic-hematologist-oncologists. In 2006, the San Beda Alumni Association board of trustees chose him to be the recipient of the Distinguished Bedan award in the field of Medicine, citing his multifarious achievements in this important field of service, and for embodying the Benedictine ideals of peace, work and pray. With a number of people still having reservations about being vaccinated, Dr. Chito has this to say- “Believe much in Science. The now available vaccine is God's answer to our fervent prayer to put an end to this deadly virus which claimed and destroyed many lives globally.” Very well said, Dr. Chito, and thank you for leading the way . Your San Beda University family is truly proud of you. Your distinct place in history as the first Bedan recipient of this important life-saving tool is assured. 36

But these are topics for another good story, right? So during the first few weeks of the quarantine, I did what a normal person would do, I Netflix'd and chilled the days away, unaware that although this is a relaxing activity, it also was, in a way, unproductive. And so after realizing that I will be stuck in this situation probably for the rest of the year, I got up and started to move one step at a time. For many of us who spent months within the corners of our homes, the challenge is how to take better care of ourselves with the resources available. I started off with watching and following free exercise tutorials on YouTube; dancing, boxing, MMA, and other cardio exercises serve as fun alternatives to your usual gym classes. And then there's the Minimalist Fitness program written by our very own Lorenz Luigi “Cho” Lim. This program focuses on achieving your fitness goals with minimal time spent working out. This serves as my “bible” in this transformation. So I pressed on with this habit, even on days when I wanted to throw it all away and let the crisis consume me. I put one foot in front of the other and saw the weighing scale with improving numbers. I looked at the mirror, monitored my food intake and 38

Benedict Sison, CEO and Country Head of Sun Life Philippines Finding Grace in the Time of COVID-19 by Benedict Sison (HS ‘80) Could March 15 be the darkest day of 2020? I couldn't help but wonder about it, for it was the day when ECQ was declared in the land and the day when all my plans were put to a halt. Gone were the pilgrimage to Fatima, the trip to Portugal, and the safari in Kenya. Gone too were our company's grand plans for our 125th anniversary celebration. Worse, I suddenly lost the liberty to move as I pleased. Eating at my favorite restaurants was not allowed. Social interactions were curtailed. Simple pleasures like talking to people in person, shaking hands with acquaintances, and hugging and kissing loved ones were also prohibited. All these, while also navigating through difficult conversations where I'd be told, “How unfortunate you are! It must be tough being the CEO of a leading organization now that there's a pandemic.” It was a statement that got me thinking about how the situation actually impacts me not only as a CEO, but me as Benedict. Am I indeed unlucky? Moments of Reflection I found myself reflecting and adjusting. My fast-paced life became more about listening, learning, and being inspired. I now find bliss in moments of reflection when I could look ahead and prepare for the long haul. Everyone has a different way of re-energizing. Some need solitude, while others prefer company. I used to think I was the latter, as I genuinely enjoy being around people. However, this pandemic has altered the way I re-energize myself, where I now need more quiet time. And in these moments of reflection, three words have become constant themes: Gratitude, Purpose, and Transformation. Gratitude I am blessed. Jo Bacallo, Aquawoman By Ben Ayonon For many Bedan entrepreneurs, travelling around the world brings about winning business concepts and innovative ideas, but for Bedan alumna Jo Bacallo, seeing different countries is not just about enjoying and benchmarking. It's all about advocating for a better future. Jo rose from the first ever female batch of then San Beda College – Manila in the early 2000s. Admittedly, her stay in San Beda has taught her invaluable lessons about leaving a mark in an ever-changing Ben Ayonon society. Being “one of the boys” back in those days, Jo has learned the dynamics of Bedan brotherhood, and being one of the first lionesses in the lions' den, Jo and her female batchmates helped the community to fully embrace an inclusive and colorful Bedan family. Her stay in San Beda influenced her to live a life where community plays an essential role in the development of a holistically well individual and a more responsible society. As a working student, she knew how to use her resources responsibly and productively, and she was able to bring with her these values when she flew into the professional world of aviation management. Having worked for one of the most respected international airlines, Jo had the opportunity to see the world. This meant that she was able to see the most majestic tourist spots and top destinations, but this also gave her the chance to visit far-flung undeveloped areas. These travels exposed her to the realities of life, that there are communities out there that struggle to gain access to clean water, one of the most basic necessities of life. With the heart of a brave and caring lioness, Jo took up the mission to be a social entrepreneur and activist whose core mission is to help provide clean water and sanitation to the most remote areas around the world, including the Philippines. Since then, she has initiated a number of projects to help fulfill this mission. In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, Jo used her micro-water station to donate thousands of (unlabeled) bottles of drinking water to the affected communities in the Visayan region. Realizing that there's much left undone in her advocacy, Jo poured out more time and effort to being a full- fledged water warrior. This led her to amazing opportunities to work with non-water collaborators both in the Philippines and abroad. To date, Jo has been actively participating in international water conferences around the world, doing her part to address the unavailability and inaccessibility of water and sanitation, especially for remote communities in the Philippines. She was able to speak in the World Water Week held in Stockholm as a 41

Yo u n g Water Professional. She also spoke at youth conferences on the Sustainable Developmental Goals, where Goal 6 of the United Nations emphasizes the importance of the availability of water and sanitation for all. While she does this, Jo ensures that the legwork is being done in the Philippines – that is that actual projects for those who need it are being implemented and lives of different communities are improved. Through Unicef's project WASH, Jo is able to share Filipino children the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene. Through her partnerships with local and international groups, such as Juan Portrait, The Storytelling Project, Klasrums ng Pag-Asa, The Wimler Foundation, and Art Dubai, Jo continues to expand her water crusade from one community to another. She continuously works with local authorities and private groups (and individuals) to fuel this mission of educating communities and providing them with clean water and a sanitation management system. Looking at her journey, Jo has gone a long way since her days in San Beda. But she acknowledges that this mission is far from over. The path is long and wavy in building a safer place for the next generations. For young Bedans, Jo's message is to keep believing in what you can achieve, even though there are days where you struggle to get up and finish those deliverables. Remember that at the end of the day, success will be defined not by the millions you have made, but by the number of lives you have touched. Ultimately, she encourages Bedans of all generations to take part, in their own simple ways, in the preservation of our water resources and share in the mission of building a more sustainable future for all. 42
