Editor’s Message K 1

by Vianne Gayl Murcia, Civil Engineering Covid-19, like a sail unfurling, spread its horror to the world in 2019, annihilating not just our health but also people's lives. There have been numerous changes, including establishment closures, increases in unemployment, social distancing, and, most notably, changes in the educational system. Online learning was established, with physical classes being replaced by virtual ones. Teachers and students have faced increased challenges, as they have to adapt to this new teaching and learning environment, respectively. E-learning, according to the Economic Times (ET), is a systematic learning approach that utilizes electronic resources. It is regarded as convenient due to its adaptable access. However, this is not always the case. Numerous difficulties are frequently encountered by the majority of students. Specifically, a lack of resources and technological expertise. Due to the fact that not all students have access to the necessary materials, connections, and equipment, accessibility requires considerable work. Second, it has a detrimental effect on our mental health. According to the Kentucky Counseling Center, \"the lack of social interaction in online education contributes to feelings of loneliness, apathy, and isolation.\" It exacerbates tension and anxiety, and spending an excessive amount of time online can exhaust both students and teachers. Additionally, internal distractions such as psychological needs and emotional concerns, as well as outward distractions from the environment, inhibit students from focusing on the class and giving it their complete attention. Finally, time management is necessary. Due to the fact that we can study at our own pace, developing self-discipline is a significant challenge. For example, students struggle with low motivation, procrastination tendencies, a lack of organization, balancing, difficulty prioritizing, and perfectionism. In this world, the only constant is change, and we must remain resilient. Bear in mind that no race has an end. There are problems around us, but bear in mind that each one has a solution. Learning is not measured in terms of distance or difficulty, but in terms of how far you are ready to push yourself. As Albert Einstein put it, \"wisdom is not the result of education but of a lifelong effort to acquire it.\" Finally, as a result of change, we grow and conquer new challenges. 2

University life hasn’t started out quite like how I imagined it. Onsite lectures have been replaced with online meetings, lab sessions suffered the same fate, socialization can only happen through social media, and a lot of the physical struggles, such as travel, have been replaced with more abstract problems — motivation to avoid burnout, finding new ways to contact professors for class materials, multiple channels causing some confusion for receiving and sending class work. Now, don’t get me wrong. From the paragraph above, it may seem as though I only have bad things to share about the whole experience, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While learning from home, I haven’t needed to think about how to feed myself, I’m well taken care of and attending classes is not a problem as all I need to do is press on the link provided in one of the universities domains to attend. Class materials are made accessible and meetings are recorded allowing you to review your lectures. As a first-year student from the faculty of Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering who hasn’t experienced life on campus, I can’t really compare it to online learning. Balancing a healthy and efficient work and life schedule hasn’t been a walk in the park but that struggle is universal to both. On a less general note, I have enjoyed the whole experience so far, from the online orientations, both from the lecturers and the international committee, to the whole learning from the comfort of your own home without worrying about contracting that cursed virus. I have had more time to bond with my family as we are all stuck at home together and I see that as a huge positive. Overall, the first few weeks of distance learning have been pleasant and I hope it stays that way. EURI GENESIS CAPIZ, ELECTRONIC AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING 3

Story We have been living for two years with the COVID-19 pandemic since its official announcement. We were coping with reality, hoping we could fix past mistakes responsible for this decaying world. This event warned the brightest parts of societies since the early 2020s. Yet, provided with comfort and security, some remained careless. However, the pandemic challenged us till we broke down into desperation and paranoia. The world faced global economic depression, outrageous politics, and distress. Even if the environment is becoming healthier, not all of our minds are ready for the consequences, especially not since 2020, when the pandemic reached its peak. Success or failure, this cycle is driving us to insanity! Let alone the year 2021. Particular groups of people, to whom I owe my greatest gratitude, are the sacrificial front-lines. They are our knowledgeable saviors who bled for the helpless. They are the reasons we are still here clean, enjoying Netflix at home, and getting to spend time with our families without needing to worry about hygiene. Or are we, after everything they did? We need to stand for ourselves. Let’s be pragmatic. Our technologies. Those will influence everyone in the end. Now, we rely on them the most. Devices may help compensate for demotivation since distance learning, but we also must develop new mindsets, become more efficient, and be immune to distress from unpredictability. !! KMUTT VOICE !!How my freshman year started with Online Learning by Rianne Clair Oñas, Civil Engineering When I first imagined myself studying at KMUTT three years ago, I envisioned myself living in a dorm, meeting people from various nationalities, exploring Thailand's beautiful places, physically participating in school activities, and simply making the most of my university experience. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak that began in late 2019, institutions were compelled to switch to online learning, and my freshman year began differently than I had imagined. As an international student, the first month of online learning was definitely not easy. Aside from experiencing demotivation and technological difficulties, I found socializing a challenge as well. At first, I really had a hard time making friends. The reason for this is that I didn't know anyone, and approaching someone you haven't met in person is difficult, especially considering the language barrier and cultural differences. However, thanks to the online activities organized by KMUTT, specifically the engineering department, I was able to meet new friends from Thailand and other countries. We only communicated through applications like Zoom, Discord, Instagram, and Line, but we were, nonetheless, getting to know each other. Furthermore, our teachers and seniors, who are all very nice and approachable, have gone out of their way to make us feel at ease with our studies. They have tremendously aided me in adjusting to the life of an online university student. Overall, the pandemic has affected our education in a way that none of us had anticipated. Of course, there are challenges, and I still prefer face-to-face lessons, but I’ve learned to look at the brighter side of it. Even though we won't be able to meet in person anytime soon, I'm confident that with the support of the KMUTT community, I'll be able to make the most of my freshman year online. 5 !!

www.issuu.com GLOBAL ANT SHORT-TERM PROGRAM Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan by Cindy Gaoat, Computer Engineering More than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the majority were already able to grasp and live by the new normal. We were still able to continue our way of living despite the worsening public health situation. Alternately, work from home policies and online classes were implemented, all thanks to the capacity of our everevolving technology. Not to mention, short-term and exchange programs are still possible to be conducted during this pandemic. I decided to participate in a free online short-term program which is the Cross-Cultural Engineering Program arranged by the International A airs O ce in partnership with NOVA and SIT. It was my very rst time joining this kind of program. I am very glad that programs like this were possible to be held where students can expand their knowledge and experience despite the pandemic. This program taught me additional engineering knowledge which I can use in my studies. It was a bit di cult conducting a group project online but thankfully we managed to come up with a good project. It is a project-based program where participants are asked to come up with a product that addresses social and environmental issues. Innovative and fresh ideas were presented by 6 di erent groups. As for our project, we developed a traveling application software to promote tourism that can adhere to the current pandemic lifestyle. This application uses a recommendation system. We decided to add a 3D town tour feature to our application. I have learned di erent engineering approaches which can be useful as an engineering student and also to work and think in a multicultural setting. The program was only held for nine days but I have de nitely gained a lot of new ideas and perspectives by accomplishing this project with my team. I encourage students to join and take advantage of this kind of program as it can expand their knowledge, build connections and allow them to collaborate to build new ideas for real world applications.

By Edgar Wilfred Olegario Ever since the onset of this pandemic, our health has been exposed to risk. Everyone has beenaffected by this invisible enemy. It may not reveal itself directly, but it has taken the lives of manyalready. And instead of geng scared, we should always remember that “Prevenon is beer thancure.” Here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself during this pandemic: 1 Stay at home. 2 Have proper ventilation. 3 Sanitize. It is necessary to not go outside By cleaning and disinfecting since going outside will have a frequently touched surfaces, you higher risk of you contracting will prevent any virus and bacteria the virus. Go outside only for from clinging to things. essential needs. Proper circulation of air keeps the air fresh in a household. It also reduces the risk of potential virus particles being suspended in the air. 4 Wear a mask. 5 Call a doctor immediately after experiencing symptoms. We know that one mode of virus Monitor your health always.
