TCS&D Magazine | #tcsdnews TRAILERS, BODIES, REFRIGERATION & EQUIPMENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ECOOLTEC refrigeration systems protect the climate NATURAL REFRIGERANTS: SAFE DESIGN AND MAXIMUM OPERATIONAL SAFETY Furthermore, it’s important to stress the ECOOLTEC design pays very close attention to maximum operational safety. The refrigeration process takes place completely outside the cargo hold. Therefore, the natural, constantly present air flow ensures that in the unlikely event of escaping, R1270 (propene) immediately mixes with the ambient air and evaporates. This prevents the formation of a flammable mixture at any time. In addition, ECOOLTEC uses an incredibly small refrigerant charge down by 90 percent when compared with conventional transport refrigeration systems. In the box body, the natural refrigerant CO2 ensures cold distribution. The R1270 and R744 circuits flow past each other outside the body via a plate heat exchanger and are thus thermally linked. The refrigeration process takes place completely outside the cargo hold. ECOOLTEC Grosskopf GmbH has developed a generation of ECOOLTEC TM182: POWERFUL AND SUITABLE FOR REGIONAL electrically driven transport refrigeration machines that are DISTRIBUTION economical efficient and, thanks to their natural refrigerants, The refrigeration system from ECOOLTEC has an enormous refrigerating cool cargo in a sustainable manner. Since current transport refrigeration systems usually do not have a fully hermetic refrigerant circuit, refrigerant leaks steadily over time. The ECOOLTEC unit, on the other hand, offers fully hermetic refrigerant circuits. F-GASES AS REFRIGERANTS CAN JEOPARDISE FUTURE OPERATIONAL AVAILABILITY The European F-Gas Regulation (EU) No. 517/2014 restricts the use of all fluorinated refrigerants, and in some cases even bans them. In addition, the REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 aims to limit the use of chemicals with harmful effects on human health. In the future, this legislation could also be applied to F-gases, which would additionally have a strong restrictive effect on the use of refrigerants, especially those forming TFA and PFA. This will restrict the operational life of refrigeration systems, especially if refrigerants are no longer available for servicing. 24 www.tcsandd.com AUGUST 2023

Why solar is a hot topic for warehouses Clare Bottle FCILT, Chief Executive, UKWA Since the launch of UKWA’s landmark report into the benefits and barriers of solar panels on warehouse rooftops last year, the subject of solar power has increasingly been in the news – most recently, it was announced that UK universities and tech companies are to receive £4.3m in government funding to develop space-based solar power. With their solar deployment ambition declared as 70 gigawatts by 2035, it has become a hot topic for government, and accordingly they have set up a Solar Taskforce to drive forward the actions needed to meet their objectives. The Taskforce is co-chaired by the Rt Hon. Graham Stuart MP, Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, alongside Chris Hewett, CEO of Solar Energy UK. It was Chris who suggested that UKWA should be invited to be part of and Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Shadow Minister for Energy and the Green the rooftop subgroup reporting to the Taskforce, and I’m delighted to be New Deal, laid out the Labour Party’s vision for the UK solar industry. able to represent our sector in this important initiative. Dr Whitehead confirmed that in his view solar has been a success, The Taskforce brings together key players from industry, regulatory and describing it as ‘absolutely up there as a central player’. He proceeded other relevant organisations to drive forward increases in rooftop as to outline Labour’s ‘Moonshot Challenge’, which aims to decarbonise the well as ground-mounted solar installation projects and the infrastructure power sector by 2030 to help reach Net Zero. The ambition is to triple needed to meet the expectation of a fivefold increase in deployment of solar up to 50GW supplemented by nuclear power, hydrogen, off and photovoltaic solar panels (up to 70GW) by 2035. onshore wind and other innovative renewable sources. Covering an entire temperature-controlled facility with solar PV will generate only a quarter of the electricity needed. This suggests that alternative strategies must be considered for the sector. One option, for example, might be to cooperate with others where there are several ambient and temperature-controlled warehouses co-located on a single estate. There may be opportunities to sell to and buy from each other, but selling electricity is highly regulated.
