BOOT searching for something where he could prove his worth. After many Lou German had been employed as a mechanic and was attempts at landing a job at Cat, he was losing faith that jobs were STRAP as plentiful as he was led to believe. Because of his meager savings, they were renting a small apartment in East Peoria by the week in hopes of soon landing a job. Since Lou didn’t have an automobile, BEGINNING he made the trip across the bridge daily from East Peoria to North Adams St. where R.G. LeTourneau had started building construction equipment similar to that of Caterpillar. He would receive the same report every day of “No, we are not hiring”. But something felt diferent about LeTourneau’s and Lou sensed that if they could see his determination, they might give him a chance. Every day, he kept making that trip across the bridge to the employment oice at LeTourneaus. One day the foreman at LeTourneaus made the comment “Fellow, it looks like you are not going to stop bothering me until I give you a job. Report back here tomorrow morning with your tools”. Lou said, “Thank you sir. I will be back in the morning”. He only had one problem, he no longer had any tools as he had to sell them to have money for his move North. Being a resourceful person, he went back to his land lady and asked if he could have the rent back that he had just paid her so that he could purchase some tools. With the new job, he could pay back the rent IN 1932, THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF ONE and future rent as well. Without the loan, it would have been the last MAN AND HIS FAMILY WERE PUT INTO rent she would receive as he was oicially broke. Even with all of his success at LeTourneaus, Lou German had a great desire to sell farm equipment and to manage his own business. Just a few blocks away from his factory job on Adams St was the Allis Chalmers Machinery Co. All of the major tractor companies at that time had branch locations in Peoria, except John Deere. Allis Chalmers told Lou that they had open dealer locations in three central Illinois locations. Lou looked at all three locations and decided that Princeville, IL was the best place for him to set up shop. By this time, Lou and Regina had a second son, Charles “Chuck” German. Unfortunately, inances were still very tight to German-Bliss and he didn’t have the ive thousand dollars he needed to start a new business that included equipment, parts inventory, tooling, Equipment on your rolling stock, and operating capital. With business plan in hand, he made a trip to PA and found a receptive family investor who We’re proud to be loaned him the money to start what would be called L.E. German Implement Co. Inc. in Princeville, IL. your nancial partner. The new business opened in the spring of 1940 in a rented storefront building on Walnut St. in Princeville. Today that same building is still in use and is currently a Mexican restaurant. In the early days, Lou worked as the parts man, salesman, and the mechanic. His early staf was rounded out by his wife, Regina, another mechanic, and a setup man. The landlord was amazed after the irst year that Lou was still in business. He was so surprised, that he said “German, I didn’t think you would last. So I’m going to raise your rent”. Not being one to ever be held hostage by another’s demands, Lou set out to own his own piece of property and scraped all he had together and purchased a piece of property on the west edge of Princeville located on Route 90 and began construction of a 40x60 block building to house the growing company. Every time Loren would use the intercom, he would serenade our entire Princeville store with a song that was appropriate for that time of year; might be a Christmas carol or some other fun and uplifting song. I really miss those serenades from Loren who is now retired, but still enjoy him coming in as he is a Kubota owner and assists the Princeville Cemetery with equipment purchases each year. STORIES FROM THE PAST Another nickname was not for a man, but for a machine. Every dealership needs a tractor with a boom on the front of it for picking up loads and placing them easily in tight places. Over the years, we had a number of diferent Boom Tractors and they were all named “Mose,” short for “Moses”. Mose was used by many to make the job easier. In the early days, Mose never had power steering, so putting a heavy load on the boom and then picking it up and trying to turn was diicult at best. During the 1950s we got our irst Mose that actually had power steering, but it was cable controlled steering. You can imagine that cables and heavy loads usually didn’t last long, but it sure was easier than manual steer. Mose is now in its 7-8th coniguration and in its’ current status will probably last a number of more years. Good old Mose is always on the job. Always looking for a challenge, my grandfather had a couple of interesting opportunities with Allis Chalmers in the late 1940s. The irst was to develop a mechanical sweet corn harvester and he worked with the owners of Princeville Canning Company, the Truitts. Because of his mechanical know-how, he traveled with the Truitts to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas so that they could test this new mechanical harvester and make it function with the same accuracy that the manual (human) pickers were able to do. It was an elaborate machine that functioned fairly well but it could never pick at the quality level necessary for a production machine. Another opportunity came along with Allis Chalmers testing a round hay baler. It was the irst of its kind called the Roto-Baler. It produced a small round bale that could be left outside and would shed moisture much better than the square bales of that time. My grandfather and another man, Tom Beall, were given the chance to use this new technology and run as many bales through it as possible over a couple of seasons. AC wanted to make sure that it worked and knew that my grandfather could ix it if it broke. My grandfather and Mr. Beall literally baled night and day and would only stop when the dew got too heavy late at night. One day Mr. Beall came into my grandfather and told him “German, you lied to me. You told me you would give me full-time work”. My grandfather replied “Tom, you work all kinds of hours, what do you mean?”. Mr. Beall said, “Well, I still have from 11PM to 6AM with nothing to do!” At a proit of $.10 per bale, my grandfather made enough money of that round baler during that season to buy a brand new car. In 1960 Bliss Implement was founded. For many years that business served the agricultural customer in the Princeville area. Merv Bliss founded their three-generation business. In 2000, L.E. German Implement Co and Bliss Implement Co combined their best and became German-Bliss Equipment Inc. Over the past 15 years, both John Bliss (2nd generation) and JP Bliss (3rd generation) have played important roles in the new company. Now Nick Bliss (3rd generation) is taking over where his father, John, left of and will carry on the Bliss name for many years to come. We are excited about Nick being part of our company for the past 13 years. Great customers, dedicated employees, and ingenuity coupled with determination has allowed German-Bliss Equipment to prosper for many years. With well-trained employees in most key areas of the company, such as CFO, Alex Ingels, East Peoria branch manager, Loren Martin, and Springield branch manager, Rob Kalabus, we have developed a strong team of high-performers who do a great job of communicating the mission to each employee. Our goal is that every staf member can be utilized to their full extent and look upon German-Bliss Equipment as more than job, but as a team member where they play an important role in both our customers’ and our companies’ success. Larry is a few years older than Glenn and began his career in 1963. Working in the service department as a technician, Larry specialized in working on Ford tractors. There were so many times that you could venture into the shop and ind a Ford tractor split into multiple sections with parts laid out everywhere as Larry diagnosed and successfully repaired literally thousands of tractor problems over his career. In the 1960s, Ford introduced a transmission called the Select-O-Speed which allowed the operator to change between gears without the need to clutch. The technology was revolutionary, but also extremely troublesome. There were few technicians who would even want to work on them as they were so complicated. Larry became known in the area as one of the few who would take on the project, and put them back into working order. Larry retired in 2011 after 48 years of wonderful and dedicated service to the company and its customers. Larry passed away in March 2015. He will be greatly missed. Glenn Hufman began his career right out of serving our country in the military in 1968. Glenn worked in the parts department for a few years and learned much about both the equipment and our customers. After a few years, he began to get the hankering to apply his skills to equipment sales. It didn’t take long for Glenn to become a top performer for German-Bliss Equipment. Glenn has been our lead salesperson for many years and adds so much experience to our ranks as he has always had the ability to focus on the bigger picture of what it takes to make the company successful. One of the greatest skills that Glenn has developed is the power of suggestion. So many times we hear Glenn greeting a customer in the showroom who had come into the dealership to get some parts and he would say, “Hey Joe, I have that new tractor that you have been waiting to buy”. The customer would laugh and say “Right Glenn”. Sure enough, that same day or maybe a few weeks later, the customer would be the happy owner of a brand new tractor. Glenn will be celebrating his 47th year with the company in 2015. The Hufman family will always hold a very special place in our hearts and we are so proud to have them calling German-Bliss Equipment “home” for 102 years. 103 years is just around the corner. As a child, my grandfather told me many stories of how he would be at the dealership on Sunday afternoon getting parts for a farmer, under a baler on a hot, July afternoon making a repair, unloading a train carload of implements on a cold December day, all because that is what the customer needed to get their job completed. PREPARED FOR GROWTH AND CHANGE Hardly a day goes by that I am not amazed at how fast business practices and customer expectations change. In my 30 years in the business, the change of pace has never been faster. Most of it is good. One of those areas that has seen a huge amount of value-creating change has been in the parts department. When I started working during my middle school and high school years, every part in our inventory had a corresponding note card that had all of the inventory information such as on-hand quantity, location, and pricing. Every transaction to sell a part included pulling out the corresponding inventory card and updating it. Each time inventory came into replenish, the cards again had to be pulled. This activity was a normal part of the business, but extremely time-consuming. It greatly limited how many transactions a parts person could handle. Today, our people handle dozens more times the amount of information with so much greater accuracy and speed. Because of our growing on-line presence, we now sell parts to customers literally anywhere. Everyday not only are we assisting our local customers, but many calls come in from all over the United States and Canada. In addition, multiple orders are placed on our online grocery carts. Customers have the ability to look up many of their parts, compare pricing, and place their orders; all without having to talk to anyone, if they so choose. Change is great and we have invested accordingly to make sure that we are on the cutting-edge of technology to aid our customers in giving what you need. But more importantly, German-Bliss Equipment will ALWAYS appreciate you and give you the personal touch that it takes to make sure you have the highest value experience since technology can never replace a “Thank You”. LESSONS FROM MY FATHER AND GRANDFATHER by Greg German With only 13% of businesses today successfully being handed down to the 3rd generation, I feel blessed, to say the least, that German-Bliss Equipment is very sound and growing as we celebrate our 3/4 of a century birthday. I’m even more fortunate in having the opportunity to work side by side with both my father and grandfather for about 8 years. With the family business being a frequent topic at most family meals and of-hour get-togethers, I wanted to pass along just a few of the business lessons that I learned. #5 “You can’t sell from an empty wagon”. Meaning- You need to stock what people want in the quantity that they want them. This has been extremely important with the expanding market for part-time farmers and hobbyists. Customers make quick decisions and are not willing to wait. If done right; they shouldn’t have to wait. #4 “You never go broke selling at a proit”. Meaning- Your resources (cash) will quickly vanish if you don’t try to create a reasonable proit on most every transaction. So many businesses try to compete on price along versus creating true “value” for the customer. Our goal has always been to add MORE value to every customer experience. #3 “Our employees are our greatest asset”. Meaning- Each and every employee that we have is important to us. They have goals and dreams just like anyone else. It is important that they can reach their goals and fulill their dreams in order for the company to reach its goals. #2 “Your most important customer is the one right in front of you”. Meaning- It might be closing time or Saturday afternoon, but when one of our customers has a need in order to keep them working, they are the priority. We always put their needs irst. #1 “Give back to God the irst-fruits of your labor”. Meaning- Everything that has been built these last 75 years is ALL God’s. We are simply managing it for him. He deserves all the credit and thanks for what He has done in our and our employee’s lives. I cherish the time that I have been given to be part of German-Bliss Equipment.
