TRUSTEE NEWS 9th District Trustee Representing: AR, LA, OK, TX Ronda Lane, BS, CDA, RDA, FADAA The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners is being reviewed. Many state agencies (such as the state dental board) undergo periodic reviews by their state Legislatures to evaluate their efficiency and the need for the agency to exist. This is called the Sunset process. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners is undergoing this evaluation process right now. During this process, interested parties or individual citizens can participate. The purpose of the Sunset process is to determine if the agency is still needed and to explore ways to ensure that the agency’s funds are well spent. The Texas Dental Assistants Association (TDAA) has actively been involved and will continue to monitor and participate whenever they can as they advocate for the safety of patients by credentialed dental assistants. Step 1 The Sunset staff performed extensive research and analysis to evaluate the need for, performance of, and improvements to the agency under review. This included a Self-Evaluation Report that the agency performed on itself and for which interested parties provided information to the staff. The Sunset staff then published a report with recommendations based upon all the information gathered. The report was published in early April 2016 with a recommendation to discontinue all dental assisting certificates in Texas (Radiation, Pit & Fissure, Coronal Polishing & monitoring nitrous oxide). TDAA responded by the deadline of April 22 and encouraged many members to write the Sunset Commission as well. Step 2 The next step was a public hearing to hear oral testimony from interested parties. There were several other recommendations made as well, including reducing the composition of the Dental Board from 15 to 11. TDAA again participated and went to the Capitol and provided oral testimony in support of keeping the certifications for dental assistants and asked the Sunset Commission members to consider placing a dental assistant on the Board. The Commission met again after consideration of all oral and written testimonies and revised their report which was published on August 22, 2016. The good news is that they changed their recommendation about dental assistant certifications and have now recommended that the Board combine all certificate programs into one registration. (TDAA was heard!) PG 50 The Dental Assistant September/October 2016

TRUSTEE NEWS Step 3 WE ARE THE ADAA The next step will be the Texas Legislature decision. TDAA will continue to participate after the Legislature goes into session and these recommendations are drafted into bills and discussed during hearings of both the House and Senate committees. Several other states have a similar Sunset review process including CA, CT, IL, IN, ME, MN, NM, OK, UT, VA, WV. I will keep you informed as TDAA proceeds through the process. I thought it would be informative for other members to learn about and perhaps be involved in their states legislative changes that directly affect the practice of dental assisting. There is no doubt that without ADAA & TDAA (organized membership) we Join now at: would not have been heard. www.adaausa.org If you believe that what you do for every patient is important . . .
