COVID-19 NEWS The business community has welcomed comments from the first minister that there will be no further Covid-19 restrictions before Christmas. Non-essential retail and some parts of the hospitality sector can reopen next Friday, the NI Executive agreed on Thursday. Pubs that do not serve food will have to remain shut. But health professionals have warned there will be an increase in transmission due to the eased rules. Many hospitality businesses, including restaurants, cafes and hotels, can resume trading but must be closed at 23:00 GMT each day.\"We're trying to make sure people have a good Christmas and can come together in a safe way,\" First Minister Arlene Foster said on Thursday. The DUP leader said guidance would be issued for several sectors so that they could operate safely, and said there was a need to provide more financial support to drink-only pubs. Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill described the relaxations as \"measured\" and would allow people to move around \"a bit more freely\", but acknowledged it came with a risk.

MEA NEWS Mid and East Antrim Borough Council have announced dates for our Christmas Markets in Ballymena. Greenvale Street in Ballymena will host a small number of local traders on Saturday 12 December from 10am to 5pm, Sunday 13 December from 1pm to 5pm and Monday 14 December from 10am to 4pm. As part of the town centre recovery plan and with the emphasis on ‘shopping local’, Council’s Town Centre Recovery Group is focused on supporting local town centre businesses during these challenging times. Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, said: “This has been an extremely challenging year for local traders and residents alike.“ However, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is committed to the health, wellbeing and economic prosperity of our residents and businesses at all times and this is especially relevant as we prepare for three Christmas Markets in the borough in coming weeks.“Strict measures will be in place to ensure the safety of all throughout and while things might be a little bit different than in other years, we are confident they will help spread a little bit of festive joy.” The Christmas Artisan and Craft Markets, while traditional in spirit, will operate in strict accordance with all Public Health Agency Guidelines (PHA) and will be under constant review. Council has commissioned Urban Market NI to manage the markets in all three locations. Social distancing measures will be in place, sanitising stations will be located throughout, and face coverings must be worn at all times. Christmas in Mid and East Antrim will look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get into the festive fun with council’s packed programme of seasonal activities for all the family supporting and shopping local.Rediscover the #SpiritofMEA by supporting our wonderful local businesses and be assured that all the safety measures are in place to protect you and your family to shop local. The markets are part of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Christmas celebrations so why not share your festive fun by tagging #SpiritofMEA in any social media posts which we can share online.

WWW.BRAVEHEARTSNI.COM/DONATE Aims - BraveheartsNI aim is to support teenagers and young adults in Northern Ireland with congenital heart disease and support their families providing pastoral and welfare support. Objectives - BraveheartsNI will build a network of support for CHD patients in NI with responsibility being assumed by the Bravehearts themselves. All work through BraveheartsNI will be completed on a volunteer basis with all funds raised or donated being used directly where needed within NI. The Bravehearts themselves will gain strength and friendship by working alongside each other supporting and encouraging themselves and others in their efforts to reach other Bravehearts and their families. This will make huge strides in combating isolation within this small demographic group and will give Bravehearts a purpose that they can control and develop. Remaining a volunteer patient led charity is of the utmost importance to us. We have already built an extremely strong ethos and have been rewarded for this by support and donations.

COMMUNITY NEWS Cllr Reid welcomes green boost for Wrightbus SDLP Ballymena Councillor Eugene Reid has welcomed an announcement from Minister Nichola Mallon that the Department for Infrastructure is to order 145 zero and low emission buses from local company Wrightbus. The investment of £66m is a key part of the Net Zero Emissions strategy. The investment is a part of the SDLP commitment to deliver cleaner, greener communities and support sustainable transport. Cllr Eugene Reid said: “This is an enormous investment of £66m in clean, green sustainable transport technology and it’s a huge boost for our local economy. Minister Nichola Mallon is showing exactly how the Executive can use its power to secure jobs, deliver investment and tackle the climate crisis. “Ballymena has suffered more than most other towns when it comes to the loss of skilled jobs. The SDLP has made a clear commitment to supporting our community by helping us to contribute to the effort to reduce carbon emissions. “Ballymena is at the cutting edge of sustainable transport technology. The hydrogen power buses that we’re producing create no toxic emissions – only water. We can position ourselves as a global leader in sustainable technology.“The SDLP will continue to do all we can to support local jobs, the local economy and fight the climate crisis. ULSTER RUGBY Ulster maintained their winning run in the Guinness PRO14 with a tightly-contested bonus point victory over Scarlets at Kingspan Stadium on Sunday evening. The hosts were first to put points on the board through a superb score by Rob Lyttle, who made a scintillating run and step inside the Scarlets defence with nobody to catch him. Cooney’s conversion attempt was just off-target.Ulster then started to feel the heat a little when Scarlets went on the attack. Dan Jones had two penalty opportunities in quick succession, but the radar was off on both occasions. Scarlets hit back in the 17th minute when they capitalised on a man advantage after Kieran Treadwell was sent to the bin for a high challenge, and Paul Asquith crossed for the visitors. Full-back Angus O’Brien added the conversion to take the lead.Ulster soon responded through Stewart Moore plucking out a Scarlets pass just outside the Ulster 22 to run in a superb try. Cooney’s conversion put Ulster five points ahead. On the stroke of half-time, Ulster stretched their lead when Sean Reidy powered his way over for the hosts’ third try of the evening and Cooney adding the extras. The visitors were quick out of the blocks in the second half – Steff Hughes making a cross-field kick out to winger Ryan Conbeer who then scored in the corner. The conversion attempt was off-target. Scarlets again took advantage of having an extra man while Matt Faddes was in the sin bin and Steff Evans scored the visitors’ third try of the evening. O’Brien was unable to convert. Ulster secured the try bonus point in the 65th minute through Kieran Treadwell barging over for his fourth league try. Johnston added the two. Scarlets got a fourth try through replacement prop, Phil Price, who drove over from a Scarlets maul. O’Brien’s conversion was on target, bringing the gap to two points, but Ulster did just enough to come away with the win. Full-time score: Ulster 26 Scarlets 24

THE FIRMUS ENERGY BSML In Adherence with government regulations the BSML wish to clarify. Statement from the Irish Football Association. Recently, the Northern Ireland Executive imposed another Covid-19 close down until the 11th December, which does not allow for any competitive matches at Junior level to take place and restricts people training in a group. This means that only personal training can take place outdoors within that timescale. In theory this would mean that BSML clubs could end up playing League fixtures on 12th December without at least 2 weeks football training beforehand. With this in mind the BSML Council has taken the decision to cancel all League fixtures in the BSML until Saturday 2nd January 2021 so that clubs will have a period of football training available to them prior to their matches on 2nd January and by then any further decisions of the NI Executive, on lockdowns, and the IFA, regarding the Junior Cup competition, will be known and may be taken into account as we enter 2021.T his would mean we would lose the fixture dates of the 12th and 19th December and also 26th December 2020, which we were intending to close for anyway. As previously mentioned, with the County Antrim Junior Shield being cancelled, it frees up an additional 8 Saturdays in 2021 and would ensure the 3 BSML Leagues may be completed within the 20/21 season provided there are no further major closures in the New Year. We will keep our clubs, sponsors and supporters updated in the days and weeks ahead.
