COVID-19 NEWS I WOULD HAVE PREFFERED PRE- CHRISTMAS RESTRICTIONS SAYS SWANN Health Minister Robin Swann has said he would have preferred stricter coronavirus restrictions in the run-up to Christmas. Commenting on the ending of the circuit-break lockdown and the reopening of shops and much of the hospitality sector, Robin Swann said he had to accept that he operated in a five-party executive. Mr Swann also predicted that Northern Ireland would need a further tightening of restrictions in January. He said how strict those were depending on people's actions in the coming weeks. Asked by the PA news agency whether he was content with the level of restrictions in place from today, Robin Swann said: \"From a health point of view of course we would have liked to have seen I suppose stricter. \"But you know we have to realize the time of the season we're in and the fact that it is a five-party executive.\"But I am content that there's enough guidance out there if people follow them - follow the rules and regulations that we have actually have set down - that we can keep this virus under control, we can stop the spread of Covid throughout our community in Northern Ireland.\" Asked if Northern Ireland would be facing another period of intensified restrictions in the new year, he replied: \"I would say at this point in time, yes, we will be.\"But how severe and how strict that is will depend on people's actions over the next two to three weeks.\"Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said she was nervous about what the north might be facing in January after the lifting of several coronavirus restrictions today.
TOWN NEWS \"Nervousness and excitement\" - those were the prevailing emotions in Ballymena on Friday, as shops reopened after a two-week limited lockdown. The County Antrim town's economy has taken a battering in recent years with the closure of high- profile businesses like JTI Gallaher and Michelin. Now it is reeling from the human and financial impact of coronavirus. Hugh Black, part of the management team at the town's Tower Centre, said he had \"seen a lot in my time, but nothing compares to this\".\"I think the six million dollar question is are we going to pull back a lot of what we have lost in the two weeks, how busy is it going to be?\" he told BBC News NI's Good Morning Ulster. One early resident at the centre on Friday morning was the big man himself - Santa Claus - who was sprinkling some positive seasonal energy, while Christmas trees are being used as markers to highlight the one-way system. Cllr Eugene Reid, of Ballymena Chamber of Commerce, reflected on the town's resilience and said \"stakeholders\" needed to \"come together\" with a vision for replacing the income that had been lost by factory closures. \"We grew up and were told if it wasn't for Michelin and Gallahers or JTI as it became, the town would be struggling, but it shows the resilience of the people in the town and it shows how they have fought through those terrible circumstances when those jobs were taken out and those salaries were taken out of the economy, \" said Cllr Reid.

COUNTY ANTRIM BOXING BOARD IRISH ELITES 2021 POSTPONED Dear members, Please be advised, over the last number of weeks, several discussions and meetings have been conducted via zoom with Paul McDermott from Sport Ireland, Peter Hogan and James Lavelle from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, the IABA CEO, President, H.P. Director, Operations Manager and Hon Secretary, with regards to a return to full contact training and competition for Elite Boxers. Unfortunately, during protracted discussions, it was confirmed that the Elite Championships planned to take place in January 2021, must now be rescheduled. Despite this endorsement and numerous attempts by members representing the IABA to push for a return to meaningful training and the return of competitive boxing in January 2021. It was made clear that at this present time, given the current government restrictions and the high likelihood of a January 2021 post- Christmas spike, that no amount of provisions or protocols would be sufficient to mitigate the anticipated restriction levels in January. The Chair of the Expert Group, Peter Hogan, gave a strong undertaking that they would fully support the IABA’s efforts to run our Elite Championships as soon as possible in 2021. He also outlined their hope that in January 2021, the Government would be exploring additional amendments to the current restrictions with the intention that it would assist sporting organizations to return to meaningful training and potentially allow for the return of competition at certain levels. Again, we are doing our best to fight the good fight for Irish boxing, but overriding circumstances and problems caused by the Covid-19 global pandemic are completely beyond our control. That said, we will continue to champion the cause of boxing until we get back in the ring. Regards, Paddy Gallagher National Secretary
ULSTER RUGBY Ulster maintained their winning run in the Guinness PRO14 with a tightly-contested bonus point victory over Scarlets at Kingspan Stadium on Sunday evening. The hosts were first to put points on the board through a superb score by Rob Lyttle, who made a scintillating run and step inside the Scarlets defence with nobody to catch him. Cooney’s conversion attempt was just off-target.Ulster then started to feel the heat a little when Scarlets went on the attack. Dan Jones had two penalty opportunities in quick succession, but the radar was off on both occasions. Scarlets hit back in the 17th minute when they capitalised on a man advantage after Kieran Treadwell was sent to the bin for a high challenge, and Paul Asquith crossed for the visitors. Full-back Angus O’Brien added the conversion to take the lead.Ulster soon responded through Stewart Moore plucking out a Scarlets pass just outside the Ulster 22 to run in a superb try. Cooney’s conversion put Ulster five points ahead. On the stroke of half-time, Ulster stretched their lead when Sean Reidy powered his way over for the hosts’ third try of the evening and Cooney adding the extras. The visitors were quick out of the blocks in the second half – Steff Hughes making a cross-field kick out to winger Ryan Conbeer who then scored in the corner. The conversion attempt was off-target. Scarlets again took advantage of having an extra man while Matt Faddes was in the sin bin and Steff Evans scored the visitors’ third try of the evening. O’Brien was unable to convert. Ulster secured the try bonus point in the 65th minute through Kieran Treadwell barging over for his fourth league try. Johnston added the two. Scarlets got a fourth try through replacement prop, Phil Price, who drove over from a Scarlets maul. O’Brien’s conversion was on target, bringing the gap to two points, but Ulster did just enough to come away with the win. Full-time score: Ulster 26 Scarlets 24

THE FIRMUS ENERGY BSML In Adherence with government regulations the BSML wish to clarify. Statement from the Irish Football Association. Recently, the Northern Ireland Executive imposed another Covid-19 close down until the 11th December, which does not allow for any competitive matches at Junior level to take place and restricts people training in a group. This means that only personal training can take place outdoors within that timescale. In theory this would mean that BSML clubs could end up playing League fixtures on 12th December without at least 2 weeks football training beforehand. With this in mind the BSML Council has taken the decision to cancel all League fixtures in the BSML until Saturday 2nd January 2021 so that clubs will have a period of football training available to them prior to their matches on 2nd January and by then any further decisions of the NI Executive, on lockdowns, and the IFA, regarding the Junior Cup competition, will be known and may be taken into account as we enter 2021.T his would mean we would lose the fixture dates of the 12th and 19th December and also 26th December 2020, which we were intending to close for anyway. As previously mentioned, with the County Antrim Junior Shield being cancelled, it frees up an additional 8 Saturdays in 2021 and would ensure the 3 BSML Leagues may be completed within the 20/21 season provided there are no further major closures in the New Year. We will keep our clubs, sponsors and supporters updated in the days and weeks ahead.
