Preliminary Draft MISSION 3: JESUS’ STATEMENTS — HE SAID...WHAT? LESSON 3: JESUS TELLS ANGRY MEN: “GO AHEAD AND KILL HER...” KEY TEXT: John 7:53-8:11 MEMORY VERSE: Romans 8:1 CURRICULUM: M.K.2 Know the key elements of the Redemptive Story; M.K.4 M3 L3 NOTES Identify the relationship of Jesus to the Gospel and to one’s personal and present life; M.D.1 Accept Christ or acknowledge a time when this was previously done; M.D.4 Practice biblical “one- another’s” in their relationships TAKING AIM: Jesus loves us and wants to forgive us. APPLICATION: FOR- GIVENESS— God is able to forgive our debt because His Son paid it on our behalf. PREPARE: To Get/Do Beforehand: White glue on small plates; small baggies containing sand; a balance scale; three large cans of tomato sauce; a clear plastic glass; a big bag of jelly beans; two labels – LAW: DEATH and GRACE: PARDON. Important: Make sure that even the maximum number of jelly beans you use for the opening demonstration does not actually amount to the weight of the can. (At the end of the lesson, you can compensate for having no “winner” by sharing the jelly beans with all the students.) OPENER: I’d like to a play a guesstimating game called “Weigh” Too Much! The challenge: Place one can of tomato sauce on one side of the scale. Have each student write down how many jelly beans they think equal the weight of the can of tomato sauce. Hand out slips of paper. Have students write their “guesstimate”, sign their names, then hand their paper to the person behind/beside them for verification. When all guesses have been written down, begin counting by adding jelly beans to the glass on the other side of the balance scale. (You may wish to have the jelly beans pre-grouped in sets of ten to save time.) In the end, when no number of jelly beans balances out the can, read Daniel 5:27b: “You have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up” (NLT). TRANSITION: In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn about a bunch of men who, in a sense, pointed their finger at a sinful woman and tried to convince Jesus that she “didn’t measure up” and didn’t deserve God’s grace.1 1. Because of slight textual variations among the origi- [At this point, put the label LAW: DEATH under the can of tomato sauce, still on the nal Greek manuscripts, you scale. Label the other side of the scale GRACE: PARDON.]. Let’s dive into this story. may find that some Bibles do My goal in this lesson is simple. [Print the letters UGHT on the board.] I pray that you not include this story. Others will Understand God’s Heart Today. And what IS His heart? His heart — His deep added it in later printings desire — is to extend His grace to every one of us. But that leaves us with another because it has been widely question: What about the law we’ve all broken? accepted by the majority of biblical scholars. 87
GROUP TALK: I’ve randomly selected some seats and taped different colored M3 L3 NOTES sheets under them. Check now. If you have the letters “THO”, please come up and bring your Bible. [Post THO in front of UGHT.] 1. THOUGHT: Have the student read John 8:6 then return to their seat. A group of religious Jews had “thought” of a plot to try to trick Jesus. Here’s what I mean: ▪ Up until this time, Jesus had been gaining popularity. He was teaching, feed- ing, and healing people. ▪ But this was also stirring up the religious Jews. They were becoming annoyed, angry. Jesus was boldly claiming that He was God’s Son. Crowds were following Him. These leaders grew envious and wanted to get rid of Jesus. ▪ In chapter 7, they tried to have Jesus arrested, but even the officers were so impressed with Jesus’ words that they left Him alone (7:46). So these leaders thought up a downright shameful plan to try to trap Jesus. ▪ Now, I warn you: this story requires us to be mature and respectful. Otherwise, we’re no better than the people who tried to set this trap. ▪ This is a story about a woman who was caught in adultery — caught in a re- lationship with a man who was not her husband. ▪ I’m not sure how that strikes you. Some of you might be shocked by it. Others might think, What’s the big deal? It happens all the time. ▪ Well, I want to stress that it WAS a big deal — and it still is just as big a deal today. It matters very much to God. As we read through the Bible, we learn that idolatry (which is worshipping a false god), murder, and adultery are among the sins that God considers extremely serious. We find in this story several clues showing that the plot was pre-mediated and intended to destroy Jesus’ reputation and mission. 2. CAUGHT: Call up the student with “CA”. Have them read John 8:2, 3. ▪ Think about this: These men were “scribes”, professional copyists. Their job was to make copy after copy after copy of the Old Testament, which included all the religious laws. ▪ If you copied one newspaper article ten times, how well would you know that information? You’d probably be reciting it in your sleep! ▪ So these scribes weren’t just copyists. They were considered “experts” in the law. Yet look at how they intentionally broke the law here. Have one volunteer read Leviticus 20:10, and have another read Deuteronomy 22:22. What did the law (which they knew inside and out) demand in a situation like this? [Both guilty parties were to be stoned to death.] I realize that sounds extreme to us in our culture. But for now let’s just think about the fact that they only brought the woman. Where’s the man? 3. BROUGHT: Call up the student with “BRO”. Have them read John 8:3,4. ▪ These accusers caught and then brought this woman to the temple where Jesus was teaching. Let’s look at the symbolism here. The Feast of Tabernacles 88
had ended the day before (7:2, 37), during which time there was a great ceremony M3 L3 NOTES called the \"Illumination of the Temple”. This included the lighting of four golden oil-fed lamps* in the Court of Women, where Jesus was teaching. ▪ Now, a woman’s sin — committed in the darkness of night — is about to be dragged before the true Light of the world. ▪ Have you ever been “found out” — you’d done something you knew was wrong, and someone called you out for it? It feels pretty rotten to have “deeds of darkness” exposed by the light, doesn’t it? But imagine how much worse it would be to be hauled off into a public place and tossed right in the middle of the crowd — and THEN to have your sinful deed announced in front of them all — including this Man Jesus! We can only imagine the shame and humiliation this woman felt. 4. OUGHT: Call up the student with “O”. Have them read John 8:4, 5. ▪ Conveniently, these men pointed out only the part of the law that they wanted to trap Jesus in (again ignoring any punishment required for the man). ▪ ‘The Law of Moses is clear: SHE OUGHT TO DIE!’ They had one eye on the woman and one eye on the nearest stone to throw at her. ▪ Notice their question: “But what do you say?” The emphasis in the Greek is on the pronoun “You”. They were saying, ‘Moses says she should die. What do YOU say?’ They often tried this Moses-versus-Jesus trap (John 5:39–47; 6:31ff; 7:40ff). ▪ What would Jesus say? a) If He said NOT to stone her, He would go against the Law of Moses, make light of a sin that God called serious, and prove that He wasn’t God. b) But if Jesus said TO stone her, He would lose all credibility as being the gracious and loving “friend of publicans and sinners.” Other sinners who had found hope in Him would likely dissociate themselves from Him. ▪ We have to admit, they had really thought this through. Had they backed Jesus into a corner? How would He respond? HE WROTE ON THE GROUND WITH HIS FINGER…but, before we look at our final word, we’re going to break to do some finger art ourselves. The purpose: to put ourselves in the shoes of…not that poor woman, but of her accusers — because Jesus is about to turn the tables! Complete the activity sheet, “The Finger of God”. ACTIVITY: WHOLE GROUP: Did Jesus write either of these two passages in the ground with His finger? We don’t know. Perhaps He wrote Jeremiah 17:13, “Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord…” (NIV). Whatever He wrote, He is now about to turn His Light onto the hearts of these men — to show them that THEY are guilty of breaking the law and that THEY deserve judgment. 5. TAUGHT: Call up the student with “TA”. Have the student read John 8:7,8. Jesus taught those accusers a lesson about guilt, and He taught them, and the woman, a lesson about grace. 89
A) The Accusers: As Jesus wrote on the ground without responding to the M3 L3 NOTES accusers, they likely thought, “We’ve got Him! He doesn’t know what to say!” Notice that they kept on asking — repeatedly, over and over, like hungry hyenas ravaging their victim. ▪ Jesus then stood up slowly and said something they were NOT at all prepared for. And all of a sudden they were the ones in the hot seat! ▪ Jesus basically said, ‘Yes, the Law demands that she be stoned to death. The Law also demands that the accusers cast the first stones (Deut. 17:7). So, whoever among you is without sin, go ahead…throw the first stone.’ ▪ Then He stooped back down and began to again write on the ground. Picture the scene. Deafening silence. ▪ In today’s terms, we’d say “Checkmate” or “Mic drop”. Which of those Jews would dare declare themselves sinless? Only God is sinless. Jesus’ words pierced their conscience, and slowly, quietly, every last accuser turned and walked away — beginning with the oldest, down to the youngest. They knew they were guilty sinners, just like that woman. ▪ We must be careful when pointing our finger at others because three fingers point back at ourselves: “And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?” (Rom 2:3). ▪ What did we see in our activity? Even IF we were able to live our entire life without breaking a single law…and then, Oops! we broke one, we would be law- breakers. In God’s eyes, to break one law is equivalent to breaking them all (James 2:10). ▪ This means that we ALL need the grace that Jesus is about to offer this woman. B) The Woman: Have a student read John 8:10, 11. So what did Jesus do in the end? He showed her grace. “Neither do I condemn you!” Those were surely the happiest words she had ever heard! The God who knew not only this one great sin but everything about her declared: I do not condemn you! “Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of guilt” (Ps 32:2a NLT). “But wait!” you say. “Jesus just let her off the hook??! What about the Law? Is that what God’s grace is — just pretending that sin doesn’t matter?” No, NO, NO! Remember our lesson’s goal: to Understand God’s Heart Today. You see, those accusers put Jesus to the test: What’s it going to be — the Law OR grace? Jesus’ answer? Both. Read John 1:17. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (ESV). [Go back to the scales.] Yes, God gave Moses the Law to give to the people. But what the Law does is show us that we ALL — that woman, her accusers, me, you — are guilty sinners who deserve God’s punishment. Jesus acknowledged the TRUTH of the woman’s guilt. He told her, “Go and sin no 90
more” (v 11). But Jesus had not come into the world to condemn us. Our sin already M3 L3 NOTES condemns us (Jn 3:18), and God’s wrath will one day fall on all who choose to continue in their sin against God. Rather, Jesus came to offer up His life so that He could offer us a pardon. This pardon requires two things: we must first acknowledge the truth of our guilt and then accept the grace of our God. [Now add a can of tomato sauce to the other side of the scale, levelling both sides.] Jesus came to declare the truth that we have ALL broken God’s Law. But He also perfectly and completely fulfilled the Law! He was the only One who perfectly “measured up”. Then Jesus, the Law-Maker, went to the cross and died in place of us, the Law-breakers. So when Jesus told this woman, ‘I don’t condemn you,’ He was saying, in essence, ‘I will pay for all your damages when I go to the cross.’ When your parents pay for something using a credit card, they’re saying, “I will pay…but a little later.” A week or two go by and, sure enough, the bill arrives and they pay it. The day finally came for Jesus to pay for that woman’s sins, and our sins, and “the sins of the whole world” (1 Jn 2:2). And THAT is why Jesus was able to extend GRACE to her that day. [Add a second can of sauce on top of the first one, tipping the scales in favour of GRACE.] So, though the law is against us and demands death, Jesus brought truth in that He ILLUSTRATION: Let me finish with one final illustration... Say your parents have a mortgage with the bank, but they simply don’t have enough money to make this month’s payment, or next month’s, or the month’s after that… Eventually, the bank’s going to call your parents in for a meeting. “You’re owing on your mortgage,” says the bank employee. “We know. But we don’t have enough money.” Can the bank employee just say, “Oh, that’s okay. Don’t worry about it. We’ve got you covered”? No, the employee does not have the authority to say that. But let’s say a wealthy person came into the bank and announced, “I’d like to open a bank account and put 100 billion dollars in there. Whenever anyone has difficulty paying their mortgage, please withdraw their payment from this account.” Now the bank employee is authorized to say, “That’s okay. Don’t worry about these payments. We’ll cover the ones you’ve missed.” What’s the difference? The funds have been provided. The bank employee is upholding the law, truth, justice…but they are also free to show grace. How does this apply to us? 91
CONCLUSION : When Jesus died for our sin and rose again, it was like He M3 L3 NOTES opened a bank account — the “grace account” — big enough for every sinner to draw from. Jesus drew from this account for this woman, and He wants to do the same for each of us! We all “weigh” too much in our sin and we come up “weigh” too short in our ability to pay our sin-debt. How thankful we should be for that heavenly bank account that contains the “riches of His grace” (Eph 2:7). 92
Name: The Bible tells of two other times that God wrote UUMNN3ITI/T34L/3/LEALSECSSOTSNIOV1NIT1Y with His finger. Both times teach us of His character. THE FINGER OF GOD READ READ DANIEL EXODUS 31:18 5:1, 4-5, 25-28 1. What did God write with His finger? This “message” appeared on the wall during this king’s sinful party, using gold plates and goblets from the Lord’s temple. 2. What does this teach us about God’s character? Circle the answer: It was a message of JOY / JUDGMENT? 2. What does this teach us about God’s character? 93 NOW: Read James 2:10 — “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is… }Write the rest of the …of all.” verse with your finger, dipped in glue. Then, sprinkle sand overtop to show what was true of the woman, her accusers…and us.
Preliminary Draft MISSION 3: JESUS’ STATEMENTS — HE SAID...WHAT? LESSON 4: JESUS TELLS A CROWD: “EAT MY FLESH. DRINK MY BLOOD.” BIG IDEA: KEY TEXT: CURRICULUM: M.K.1 Begin to understand and articulate the Bible as one story M3 L4 NOTES by seeing the relationship of key Bible stories to The Redemp- tive Story.; M.K.4 Identify the relationship of Jesus to the Gospel and to one’s per- sonal and present life TAKING AIM: Jesus shows how He alone can save. But it’s not popular. APPLICATION: PEER PRESSURE — Many listeners forsook Jesus. “Will you also go away?” PREPARE: To Get: 3 Musketeers chocolate bars as prizes (optional); a snack and bottle of water for the Digging Deeper illustration To Do: Print off Word Phrases (at the end of the lesson); prepare the two cards for the opening game OPENER: We’re going to start off with a game called 3 Musketeers. If you enjoy Mad Gab, you’ll enjoy this. Here’s the challenge: 1. Form groups of three. 2. One person will be the card holder (“Holder”), one person will read the cryptic message (“Reader”), and the third person will try to decipher (“Decipherer”) the phrase based on the reader’s sounding it out. (RULE: The Decipherer cannot look at the card.) 3. When a phrase is successfully deciphered, rotate roles. 4. Your goal: Work together to see how many phrases you can decipher within the time limit. Let me demonstrate. [Pick two volunteers to come up. You, the teacher, hold the card so the Reader can see it, but not the Decipherer. Hold up a card that reads: “Disguise They'll Him It.” Have the Reader say it out loud repeatedly until the Decipher blurts the correct phrase: “The sky’s the limit.” Do another example, switching roles. Phrase: “Thief Act Huff Them Mat Hair” = “The fact of the matter”.] Divide the class into groups, and hand out a set of 15 cards to each group. After they’ve established their initial roles, start the clock for 3-5 minutes. (Select a time that works for your group.) You can choose to let the students keep the same role for the whole game or rotate roles after each phrase is solved. Tally their scores. Have some 3 Musketeers on hand for the winning team(s). 95
TRANSITION: Ask: How did you find this challenge? Which phrases did you M3 L4 NOTES find the most difficult to figure out? [Field responses.] You all faced the challenge of figuring out what the other person was really saying. Today we’re going to learn about a group of people who had a hard time hearing what Jesus was saying. “When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’” (Jn 6:60 ESV). It’s not that they didn’t understand His words. Rather, they had a hard time accepting the message. Literally, they were saying, ‘This is offensive! Who can stand to listen to this?’ What He said sounded SO shocking, so scandalous (the meaning of the word offend/offense in v. 61). Look at the people’s responses. a) How did the religious Jews react? (See v. 41, then v. 52 [quarreled means “to fight”].) b) Some had been following Jesus’ teachings (here, they are called disciples, which means “learners”; not necessarily “believers”, see v. 64a). How did many of them respond (see v. 66)? Before we criticize these people, maybe we’d better hear what Jesus actually said. My guess is that you might also find Jesus’ words hard to accept! Ready for this? “So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you’” (Jn 6:53). WHOA! Did Jesus really say that? It’s no surprise the people reacted so strongly. These people were strict, religious Jews. They knew that God had forbidden the eating of human flesh and all blood (v. 52; also Gen. 9:3–4; Lev. 17:10–16; 19:26). So let me ask YOU: What do YOU think He meant? [Field responses.] For starters, these people came at it from the wrong angle. As they often did, they assumed Jesus was talking literally about physical flesh and blood. But look at John 6:63b. Jesus was speaking spiritually. “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” In other words, His words had a deeper, spiritual meaning. So YOUR job is to find out what that deeper, spiritual meaning is — because, accord- ing to this verse, John 6:53, we NEED to understand this message if we want eternal life and to go to Heaven one day. Jesus said so! Let’s move to an activity that will help us decipher this message. ACTIVITY: SHEET: “THINKING IT THROUGH” Complete this sheet together orally. The objective is to help the students see that Jesus’ statement, “Eat my flesh, drink My blood”, is the same thing as, or “equal to”, “believing”. WHOLE GROUP: Okay. Jesus calls on us to “believe”. But: Belive what? That Jesus was a good person? No, that’s not enough. Even Satan believes this, and he is not going to be in Heaven. This is why Jesus used the language He did: “flesh and blood”. 96
SAY: I have two more tasks — M3 L4 NOTES 1. Continue by completing the other side of your page to see WHAT and HOW we are called to believe. 2. In about ten minutes, we’ll come back together to see if you’ve been able to figure out the meaning of Jesus’ words. WHOLE GROUP AGAIN: You’ve thought about what was going on in the minds of these listeners as they prepared for yet another Passover celebration. The Lamb. Blood and flesh. Jesus’ talk about giving Himself for the world (see 6:51). The people were getting the picture! Jesus was saying that, just as the death of the lamb at the first Passover delivered people from physical death, so the death of Christ, the Lamb of God, would deliver from spiritual death and eternal death all who choose to believe in Him. Got it? “But wait!” you say. “What did Jesus mean by eating and drinking? That seems kind of odd.” It’s actually quite simple. Let me illustrate with this little object lesson. YOU CAN ILLUSTRATE ON YOUR SHEET to show HOW we are to believe. [Eat a snack of some sort, e.g. a cookie, a Dunkin’ Munchkin. Then drink some water.] “Where did the food and drink go that I just consumed?” [It goes into your body; it literally becomes part of you — your bone, muscle, tissue. Food becomes your “life”!] When we “receive” Christ as our Savior, we’re not only spared from eternal death. God actually places the life of Jesus inside of us — and His life is eternal life! Jesus was using physical terms to teach this important spiritual lesson (see 6:63 again). “Just as you take food and drink within your body and it becomes a part of you, so you must receive Me within your innermost being so that I can give you life\" (Warren Wiersbe). APPLICATION: Jesus spoke of eating and drinking as a picture of personally receiving Christ into our life. So does this mean that we need to repeatedly ask Christ to forgive us, just as we need to eat and drink regularly to stay alive? I want to leave you with this challenge that I hope will re-VERB-erate in your mind as you leave. Yes, the two VERBS in this account pack a powerful punch: eat and drink. These verbs, in the original Greek of the New Testament, are in the aorist tense. I know! You’re thinking, “Ummmm, okay, sure!” You might not remember the term aorist when you leave our session today (though I’ll be impressed if you do!), but I DO hope you’ll remember what it means. The aorist tense means a completed action that is done once for all. Imagine eating one meal and never becoming hungry again! Or drinking one glass of water and never again being thirsty! That’s exactly the point Jesus was making. “And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst’” (v. 35). 97
The moment you “receive” by believing in Christ as Savior, God gives you — M3 L4 NOTES permanently — the very same kind of life that He has — eternal life! Believe what? You must believe that, without the “blood” of Jesus, God cannot remove His wrath from you. Without the “flesh” or life of God inside of you, you will not have eternal life. If you believe these things, you then need to “receive”, in simple faith, God’s gift of salvation by asking for His forgiveness. Have you believed in Jesus and received Him? Is His eternal life inside of you? CONCLUSION: In closing, look carefully at the response of these people and ask yourself,“How will I respond?\" Verse 64: “But there are some of you who do not believe.” To believe everything Jesus was saying that day would also mean believing that Jesus was God! Think about it: He said that HE could give people eternal life! He talked about dying and then going back up into Heaven where He came from (v. 62)! This was just too much for those religious Jews. This offended them. It was scandalous to them. Some of them became angry. Then, sadly, many who had been following Jesus and learning from Him turned and walked away (v. 66), showing that they were not true “believers” at all; they were mere “learners”. This is incredibly sad! They cared more about food for their stomachs than they did about eternal food for their souls. Will you be like these people? ILLUSTRATION: Imagine that you’ve been invited to a friend’s house for dinner. As you’re enjoying the delicious meal, your friend begins talking to you. But you interrupt them: “I’ll have more potatoes.” They pass the potatoes and continue with what they were saying. You rudely cut in: “More meat, please.” It soon becomes clear that you care more about the meal than you do about the person who invited you. Now picture Jesus as the Friend who gave you that invitation. Yes, you really like all the good things He offers you. But when it comes time to having a personal relationship with Him by receiving His forgiveness…? You’re really not so inter- ested in that. And so you choose to NOT believe and NOT receive Jesus as your Savior. Remember, if you were to die today as a Christ-rejector, your decision would go with you into eternity. You would be forever separated from the One who longs for you to be with Him in Heaven. Instead, you can choose to be like Peter. Listen to verses 67-69: “Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’” Here were some true “believers”, those who declared YOU HAVE and YOU ARE. “You have…eternal life…You are… the Son of God.” To NOT believe in and receive the Son of God is to remain on the path which leads to eternal doom. Don’t be influenced by the “many” who refuse to believe and so turn their back to Christ. Believe and receive Jesus today. He’s waiting for your answer. 98

THINKING IT THROUGH… There was a famous Greek mathematician named EUCLID (pronounced You’-klid) born in 300 BC. He is called the “Father of Geometry”. He stated: “THINGS WHICH ARE EQUAL TO THE SAME THING ARE ALSO EQUAL TO ONE ANOTHER.” For example: Try these examples (fill in the blanks). 100 AC 3+2 1+4 Harold buys chips for $1. Jerry buys a can of pop for $1. B 5 THEREFORE: is If A=B and B=C, If 3+2=5 and 1+4=5, . then A must equal C. then… The cost of the EQUAL to the cost of the PRETTY SIMPLE, EH?
