Saturday, March 10, 9:30-11:30 AM Question of the Month: “What’s better for getting hands clean and germ free: soap and water or hand sanitizer?” Answer: Soap and water. Wetting, lathering up, and rubbing your hands for 20 seconds-then rinsing thoroughly and drying- reduces bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can inactivate some germs, including cold and flu viruses, but they don’t kill other common bugs…Hand sanitizer also may not kill germs if your hands are dirty or greasy. That said, a sanitizer that’s at least 60 percent alcohol is better than nothing if you cover your hands thoroughly, rub it in, and don’t wipe it off.
