Lesson Plan Computer Science Introduction to MS Excel 2016 Topic-Inserting Table Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Identify the benefits of Excel. Spreadsheets. 2. Create a new workbook and save it. 3. Open a recently created excel Workbook. 4. Understand what is workbook and worksheet. 5. Use the cells in a workbook to enter data. 6. Add a new worksheet, rename or delete it. Resources 1. video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60w-nKDb1V8 (7.49) 2. Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson. Session Conduction Engage: Ask students what they think about how shopkeepers recorded their account information prior to computers. Or how does the school record student-related information? How a salesperson can record his sales information and do some calculations like total sales quarter-wise, and day-wise profit reports? Inform students prior to a computer it was done in a ledger book or sheets of paper files. Rows and columns divided these sheets for manually entering data using a pen or pencil. With the digital revolution, we started using electronic spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are the digital counterpart of ledger books full of worksheets. Spreadsheets are used not only for storing data but also for performing calculations. Excel 2016 is a version of Excel developed by Microsoft that runs on the Windows platform for creating worksheets. Spreadsheet stores both numerical and non-numerical data,

Concept introduction: A spreadsheet or worksheet is a file made of rows and columns that help sort, organize, and arrange data efficiently, and calculate numerical data. What makes a spreadsheet software program unique is its ability to calculate values using mathematical formulas and the data in cells. We can also create charts and graphs for the visual representations of worksheet data. By far, the most frequently used spreadsheet program is Microsoft Excel, but other spreadsheet applications exist as well. Examples are Lotus 1-2-3, Open Office Calc, and Google Drive Spreadsheet. Although some uses above could be done in a word processor, spreadsheets have an advantage over word processors when using numbers. It would be impossible to calculate multiple numbers in a word processor and have the value of the calculation immediately appear. Spreadsheets are also more dynamic with the data and can hide, show, and sort information to make processing lots of information easier. Concept Demo/Explanation: Open MS Excel 2016 from Start Menu. Explain how the MS Excel Window components are used for creating a blank worksheet file or opening a recent document. Once a blank workbook opens ask students what is the similarity between the MS Word 2016 and MS Excel 2016 interfaces. Inform since MS Word and MS Excel are products of Microsoft office so the interface will look the same. It has a Titlebar, Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, and Status bar. The ribbon has commands that are useful for workbooks. Walkthrough the other components like active cells, formula bar, cell name, sheet tab, etc. Discuss what is the workbook, worksheet, cell, row, columns, etc. Show how columns are labelled from A to Z, and then AA to AZ, BA, to BZ, etc. Ask them how rows are labeled. Discuss how to tell if a worksheet is active and how many worksheets are open by default? Inform what is a worksheet name and not to be confused with the file name Concept Practice: Show how to select a cell, range of cells, or an entire row or columns Refer to the shortcuts mentioned in the chapter to navigate between the cells. Enter some data in the active worksheet to track students and grades or information like telephone records, to-do, or grocery lists. Show how to save, open and close a workbook. Show how to add, rename or delete worksheets. Also in Microsoft Excel, there is a 31-character limit for each worksheet name.

Ask students to practice the shortcut keys. Encourage students to go through the Amazing fact sections of the book. The steps for MS Excel 2016 and 2019 are the same. Optional Activity: Students can watch the video from the resources section. Practical Application: Complete the activity given under the do-it-yourself and lab activity section of the chapter. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. 2. Practice the interactive exercises in Edusoft Smart App. 3. Solve any additional exercises on the playground.edusoft.co.in Guided Assignment Students can visit https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/excel-video-training-9bc05390- e94c-46af-a5b3-d7c22f6990bb and https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/excel2016/ and discuss their findings with the teacher. s After completing the lesson solve the exercises given in the book.
