Lesson Plan - 1 Computer Science Understanding Data Science Topic- What is Data Science and what does it do? Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Differentiate between “data” and “information”. 2. Define the term data science. 3. Draw various conclusions from the data. Resources Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson wherever required. Session Conduction Engage: I will show the following data set to the students: Then ask them the following questions: • Which burger sold the most? • In which month the sale was least? • In which month the Medium burger sold maximum? After they come up with the figures, I will ask them, do they see these figures in the data- set? The answer would be “No”. I will ask them the reason. The students will conclude that what they did was calculation on the given data.
Concept introduction: Once the students conclude that they did calculations on the data, I will inform them that what they see in the table is called data and what they have calculated is the information. What they have been doing was a small practice of data science – drawing useful information from the data. I will tell the students that these are just 9 records. Imagine 1,00,000 records or records with 20 columns! Huge data sets are difficult to analyse. For that computers are needed. Concept Demo/Explanation: First, I will conduct the following activity: Activity: (Duration 20 min.) I will create groups of 5 students each and ask them to consider the data set and derive some of their own conclusions about burger sales. After 10 minutes I will ask them to share their findings and discuss with me for next 20 minutes. I will summarise the concept understanding as below: 1. Data alone do not make any sense. 2. The logical relationships among the data points needs to be established. 3. Logical relationships among the data provide useful information. What we do with the information is kept to be explained later. Next, I will explain the various types of questions data science can answer. Such as: • Will this student pass the test? • In the last test, in which topic of my subject, the students got least marks. • How many students will score distinction in the subject by analysing their previous test marks. • How many students need extra consultation and how many need to be given more practice assignments to improve performance. Concept Practice: I will ask the students to work out the ice cream rating example given in the book. After this, I will explain the students the importance information. Information derived form the data is used to make decisions and plan for the future. Optional Activity: Watch the video in the resources section and discuss it with the teacher. Practical Application: Complete exercise 1 in the Lab Masti section in the end of the chapter. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. Evaluation After completing the lesson solve the exercises given at the end of the chapter.
Lesson Plan - 2 Computer Science Understanding Data Science Topic- How to understand Data and Applications of Data Science Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Interpret data in its various forms. 2. Describe various applications of data science in various fields. Resources 1. Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson. Session Conduction Engage: Recall from the previous session and ask the students: • What is the difference between data and information? • Give one example of data vs information? • Define the term data science. • What does data science do? • What do we do with the information derived from the data? Then, I will show them the following charts and asl them – “Do these charts show some familiar data?”
They all will say “Yes”. Concept introduction: Then I will tell them how the same data is presented in different visual forms. Presenting the data in graphical forms is called data visualisation or seeing the data in pictorial form to understand it quickly and easily. Concept Demo/Explanation: I will say – “Let us now figure out what stories these charts tell us!”. The first chart easily compares which burger size sold maximum in which month. Regular is the best seller in entire quarter. The second chart shows the trend of burger sale in entire quarter. In Feb, sale was good but dropped again in Mar. The third chart shows month-wise sales chart grouped on months and sorted on number of units sold. Feb is the best month. Then I will explain them the examples given in the book. Concept Practice: Look at the following chart and derive at least 3 conclusions from it:
Finally, I shall discuss various applications of data science in various field covering: Social media – The data on the social media web sites is used make a psychographic profile of the users. E-Commerce – customer data is used to retain the customers, promote products, enhance user experience and to predict future sales. Healthcare – identify cancer cells, anomalies in health data to predict dangers such as heart attack or brain haemorrhage. Banking/Finance – Predict profits and losses, detect fraudulent transactions, classify customers on their earning, analyse risks before granting loans, evaluate how long the customer will remain with the bank for more profits. How search engines optimise searches for better results? How governments can leverage the power of data science to address social issues and improve public services? Optional Activity: Watch the videos from the resources section. Practical Application: Workout the second exercise in the Lab Masti section. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. 2. Practice the interactive exercises in Edusoft Smart App.
