Lesson Plan - 1 Computer Science Image Processing with GIMP Selection, Drawing and Painting Tools Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Understand the benefits of using GIMP 2. Use different selection tools in GIMP. 3. Use selections modes to combine more than one selection. 4. Use at least 9 tools to draw and paint. Resources 1. video https://youtu.be/Ri1w6i6O8DA (7.53). 2. Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson. Session Conduction Engage: Ask students to name a few photo editing software. Ask students if they have played free online games or purchased any game for computer or mobile. Do they find them different? Let them answer. Then explain just like games, the software can be free(open- source) and paid(close-source). Though there are many tools for photo editing some of them we have to pay money to use e.g., Photoshop. If the free trial of photoshop is available it can be used only for a limited period with limited tools. GIMP is an open-source photo editing program that can be used without any fee by everyone. Concept introduction: For basic image editing, the free GIMP is a viable alternative to Adobe's expensive Photoshop. By default, single-window mode appears when the user opens the GIMP interface. Explain the interface parts to students: toolbox, tool panel, panel for gradient, brushes, layers, etc and the image window.

Next, explain Selection tools that are designed to select regions from the active layer to work on them without affecting the unselected areas. Tell each tool has its own individual properties, but they also share a number of options and features in common like feathering and rounded radius. Introduce Drawing and Painting tools in GIMP. All of them work by dragging the cursor around like a paintbrush, which is why they are called Paint tools. Just like Selection tools, every tool has a specific properties selector on the bottom that appears when the tool is selected. Some of the paint tools modify an image in some way rather than paint on it. Tell the paintbrush tool is similar to the Pencil except that the line is a bit fuzzier on the edges. Point out that the paintbrush tool emulates an airbrush for painting soft areas of colour. It works by making the painting lighter. For example, if the Foreground is Red, the Airbrush will paint something closer to Pink. Concept Demo/Explanation: Use the single-window mode by the “Windows” > “Single Window Mode”. Create a new file, create a new dialog box that appears, explain the template and image size option. Show different extensions in which a GIMP file can be saved. Use some images and select a part of it using different selection tools of GIMP. Show how to use Pencil, Paintbrush, Airbrush and the Ink tool, Gradient tool, Eraser tool, Clone tool. Use Ink tool to create Calligraphy effects. Use the pencil tool to draw a straight line. To get a straight line, click the beginning of the line, then hold down the Shift key, and click the endpoint of the line. By default, the line will be in the Foreground colour. Use the Background colour though by holding down the Control key. Or switch the colours around by clicking the double arrowhead on the upper right of the Foreground/Background icon. Concept Practice: Ask students to open an image and select parts using the selection tools explore the options that come with each tool. Give two images to students 1) image with waterfall 2) any pictures with a man in it. Use scissors select tool to cut the man from the second pic and put it in the first image. Ask students to draw using paint brushes, ink, airbrush, and pencil tools with different sizes of brushes.

Optional Activity: Watch the video in the resources section and discuss it with the teacher. Practical Application: Complete the lab activities given in the chapter. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. 2. Practice the interactive exercises in Edusoft Smart App. 3. Solve any additional exercises on playground.edusoft.co.in. Guided Assignment Ask students to visit https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tools-paint.html and discuss their findings with the teacher. Evaluation After completing the lesson solve the exercises given in the book.

Lesson Plan - 2 Computer Science Image Processing with GIMP Image Manipulation, Healing Tools Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Use at least 7 image manipulation tools to change the look of an image. 2. Remove any spots from an image using heal tool. 3. Blur or sharpen an image. 4. Add effects like using dodge, sponge, and burn tools. Resources 1. video https://youtu.be/4DgC2rm1zlw (7.18). 2. Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson. Session Conduction Engage: Revise the previous topic. Concept introduction: The next set of tools, the image manipulation tool modifies the presentation of the image or the presentation of an element of the image, selection, or layer. Each tool has an Options dialog and an Information dialog to set parameters. For removing wrinkles or removing marks from image Healing tools in GIMP. The Smudge tool evokes finger painting. The Dodge or Burn tool uses the current brush to lighten or darken the colours in your image. Concept Demo/Explanation: Use the steps in the book to apply various transformations using the following tools ▪ Move ▪ Crop ▪ Rotate

▪ Scale ▪ Shear ▪ Perspective ▪ Flip Create some before and after photos using Healing, Blur/Sharpen, Smudge, and Dodge/Burn tools. Show how to cut a portion of an image and paste using a variety of paste operations given in the book. Concept Practice: Ask students to resize an image using the scale tool. Create a mirrored image using the flip tool. Apply dodge and burn tool. Rectify an image using the heal tool. Change the brightness of an image using the blur/sharpen tool. Ask them to list out the shortcut keys for all the tools. Optional Activity: Watch https://youtu.be/4DgC2rm1zlw (7.18) and discuss with the teacher. Practical Application: Complete the lab activities given in the chapter. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. 2. Practice the interactive exercises in Edusoft Smart App. 3. Solve any additional exercises on playground.edusoft.co.in. Guided Assignment Students can visit https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tools-transform.html Evaluation After completing the lesson solve the exercises given in the book.

Lesson Plan - 3 Computer Science Image Processing with GIMP Layers and Filters Class: Period: Mode: Classroom/Lab Teacher: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Support Assistant: ____________________________________________________________ S.M.A.R.T. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: 1. Know what a layer is. 2. Manipulate layers in GIMP. 3. Give effects to an image using the Filter option in GIMP. Resources 1. video https://www.udemy.com/course/gimp-crash-course/. 2. Use the eContent to show the animated demos of the lesson. Session Conduction Engage: Ask students what are layers in photoshop. A layer is a term used to describe the different levels at which you can place an object in the image file. Using layers is a core skill in mastering the use of image editing software like GIMP or Photoshop, and makes it possible to create brand new images from the different parts of many other pictures. Concept introduction: Whatever you add in the document area of GIMP creates a layer in the layers panel which means layers can be defined as slices of any paper of project book which has a different document on each layer. By default, you will find the layers panel on the right side of the GIMP interface. Filters are one of the most used features for photo editing. It is a unique tool that takes an input layer or image, applies a mathematical algorithm to it, and provides a layer or image

in a modified format. GIMP has various Filters such as Blur, enhance, distorts, light and Shadow, etc.s Concept Demo/Explanation: Use the activity in the chapter to create a house and tree in layers. Also, use the mentioned tools in the activity. Concept Practice: Create a new image and create two layers with the names House and Tree. Show how to hide and unhide layers. How a layer can be protected using the lock/unlock icon in the layer panel. Merge one or two layers. Flatten an image after all the modifications are done. Ask students to apply a cartoon effect in the photo using the Cartoon filter in GIMP. Optional Activity: Students can visit https://www.udemy.com/course/gimp-crash- course/ and discuss with the teacher. Practical Application: Complete the lab activities given in the chapter. Home Assignments 1. Revise the topic covered. 2. Practice the interactive exercises in Edusoft Smart App. 3. Solve any additional exercises on playground.edusoft.co.in.
