Plastic Katathong Thongmee M.2/1 No.2 The main focus of the Facts and Figures report is measuring municipal solid waste (MSW). MSW, more commonly known as trash, comprises various items we commonly throw away. These items include packaging, food, grass clippings, sofas, computers, tires and refrigerators. In this analysis, however, EPA does not include materials that also may be disposed in non-hazardous landfills but are not generally considered MSW, including *Total MSW generation in 2018 was approximately 292.4 million tons. the breakdown of MSW generation by material. Organic materials such as paper and paperboard, yard trimmings, and food continued to be the largest component of MSW. Paper and paperboard accounted for 23.1 percent, and yard trimmings and food accounted for another 33.7 percent. Plastics comprised 12.2 percent of MSW; metals accounted for 8.8 percent; and wood made up 6.2 percent. Glass followed at 4.2 percent and rubber and leather at 3.1 percent. Other made up 1.5 percent and miscellaneous inorganic wastes made up 1.4 percent of the MSW generated in 2018 Today we will think about a topic called plastic What is plastic pollution? Plastic pollution is caused by the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It can be categorized in primary plastics, such as cigarette butts and bottle caps, or secondary plastics, resulting from the degradation of the primary ones Plastic pollution can take different forms including: • —The accumulation of waste

• —The accumulation of marine litter, fragments or microparticles of plastics and non- biodegradable fishing nets, which continue to trap wildlife and waste • —Waste causing the death of animals by ingestion of plastic objects • —The arrival of microplastics and microbeads of plastics from cosmetic and body care products • Plastic pollution • effects • This pollution can have harmful effects on the land and rivers by affecting wildlife and habitat, but also on human health But what are the causes of plastic pollution ? Negligence is the main cause. In fact, it is estimated that 80% of marine litter comes from land. This pollution comes mainly from household waste, which is poorly recycled, dumped in landfills or abandoned in nature. This waste is carried by the winds, pushed by the rains into sewers, streams, rivers, and finally in the oceans. Natural disasters such as floods must be considered as other causes of plastic pollution as well
