Editor’s Note Hello Readers! A few months ago I had the fantastic opportunity to travel to Harare, Zimbabwe and Cape Town, South Africa. While I wasn’t there for business, I found myself marveling at the hair and beauty and kicking myself for not bringing business cards. Cape Town, in particular, wasis a hotbed of looks that had me excited to see more. I found myself checking Instagram for anyone tagging the same locations to see if I could find any of the amazing styles I was seeing. After some diligent social media stalking, I managed to find several stunning images, including the work of one photographer who’s collections stood apart from anything I’d seen so far. When I saw the work of Valerie Kuzive, our cover artists and feature of the month (pg 46) I knew we needed to feature her. With her dynamic use of color, texture, framing, and the mix of old and new — it was clear to me that her work was something extraordinary. Our cover image, in particular, seemed a perfect fit for out Date Night issue. The Date Night issue is always one of our team’s favorites to work on; it gives us a chance to have a little extra fun with our features. This year, we’re taking a look at the different styles for different types of dates, some beautiful makeup ideas and much, much more. Events 2019 Award Season: Black Excellence Tis the Season for designer dresses, champagne toasts and “I would like to thank” speeches. If you’ve guessed correctly, date night isn’t the only special event in the air. The beginning of the year sparks award season for the entertainment world. As film and television recently held the Golden Globe Awards, this sparks the beginning as the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Academy Awards are soon to follow. The music world also has their biggest award show, The Grammy Awards, which brings the competition and the heat. No matter the awards, we can’t wait to see our favorites shine and take home the honors. Last month’s Golden Globe brought the film world’s Black Excellence into one room and we couldn’t help but to highlight a few of our favorites. Wakanda is still forever our favorite as the Black Panther cast presented at the show. Ryan Coogler, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira looked amazing and gave us all the feels we needed to remind us of the movie. Actress Regina King was one of the biggest winners for the night taking home the award for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for If Beale Street Could Talk. King not only devoted her speech for women and providing more jobs for them in the future, but also radiates down the red carpet showing the crowd how the night was truly her night. 18 C O S M O B I Z M A G A Z I N E

Feature RED CARPET TREND: Gel Nail Extensions Nail extensions on the red carpet are a growing trend and on the rise now that the long-coveted looks of celebrities are more accessible to the average consumer. Beauty VALERIE KUZIVA: TRADITIONAL ELEGANCE IN SOUTH AFRICA This month, we wanted to share a unique collection of images with you from photographer and artist Valerie Kuziva. Our editor first found Kuziva’s work while checking the local tags while visiting Southern Africa. From her modern take on traditional styles, it›s clear that Kuziva is someone to keep an eye on. Raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, the collections Kuziva has showcased highlight the dynamic blend of traditional cul- tural dress blended with modern hair and beauty aesthetics. This clash of styles works together beautifully to create a romantic, almost fairytale quality that we couldn’t look away from. Currently, Kuziva lives in Cape Town, South Africa and shoots her projects on a Canon Mark 2. While many of her current projects are for commercial work, she hopes to continue her work on her Kings and Queens series - which we’ve showcased a few images from here.
