Principals will learn how to use a protocol to observe andthen give descriptive feedback that leads to action planning.Using Data to Improve Student AchievementData driven decision making is important at all levels: policy, procedures, staffing, professionaldevelopment and resource allocation. Principals will look at all areas where various forms ofdata can improve student achievement.Developing Collaborative Inquiry-Based Professional Learning Communities(PLCs)Effective Professional Learning Communities in schools promote a school culture wherelearning is valued and teachers are supported to take risks. Principals will learn how to developthe skills to create an effective PLC and reculture the teaching learning environment.Transforming High Needs Schools into Places Where All Students Can be SuccessfulSchool leaders need to believe that all their students can be successful and achieve theirpotential. Principals will learn how beliefs, effective teaching strategies and targeted supportinterventions can change student performance, atttendance and engagement.The 6Cs: Deeper Learning SchoolsDr. Michael Fullan, former OISE Dean, has identified the 6 Cs of: character education;citizenship; critical thinking and problem-solving; communication; collaboration; and creativityand imagination as the skills that students and society need for well-being. Principals willlearn how to transformed their schools into 6C learning places.Creating Schools that are Inquiry and Problem-Solving Communities of Co-LearnersPrincipals face the challenge of changing the school culture to create environments whereeveryone in the building sees themselves as learners and part of a learning community thatcan identify questions and answers. In this course participants learn how to develop a newculture for teaching and learning from a school Principal who has created a curriculum in allsubject areas where inquiry and problem-solving drive the learning. Participants also learnwhat inquiry and problem-solving learning looks like in various disciplines and co-constructlessons based on this progressive approach.Courageous ConversationsEvery Principal faces challenging conversations with students, parents, teachers andcommunity members. These sessions look at active listening, diffusing emotions and tensions,looking for consensus and win-win solutions, conflict resolution and delivering difficultmessages that can be received and result in positive outcomes.What School Principals Need to Know and Be Able to Do to Lead LiteracyLiteracy is foundational to learning. Principals learn how they can provide specific instructionalleadership to the literacy learning in their schools. A key focus is identifying the componentsof a balanced literacy program and what the practical literacy look fors are when spendingtime in classrooms.What School Principals Need to Know and Be Able to Do To Lead NumeracyNumeracy is more than mathematics. It involves the communicating of mathematical learning.Principals learn how they can provide specific instructional leadership to the numeracylearning in their schools. A key focus is understanding what questions to ask and what to lookfor to determine what kind of conceptual mathematical learning is occurring.Leadership Skills: The Principal Skills that Make a DifferenceThe research of Dr. Ken Leithwood from OISE has informed the professional developmentof Principals in Canada. The knowledge and skills that make for effective school leaders areexamined through both presentations and practical workshop sessions that focus on buildingschool leadership skills and capacity.
