World Literature
- American literature is literature written or produced in the United States of America and its preceding colonies (for specific discussions of poetry and theater, see Poetry of the United States and Theater in the United States).
HISTORY - National literature is connected with national history. As we all know, English literature emerged earlier than American literature, since America was a British colony. - Therefore, while American literature’s history dates back to the 17th century, English literature emerged in the 10th century. The English style is therefore considered richer in this respect.
STYLE OF AMERICAN LITERATURE - The common tendency of American literature is to be focused on politics, economics, and social status. Satire, sarcasm, and cynicism can be also often find their way into the works of American authors. For example, language functions as a vehicle of protest in “The Catcher in the Rye” and “The Great Gatsby.”

French Literature
FRENCH LITERATURE - THE BODY OF WRITTEN WORKS IN THE FRENCH LANGUAGE PRODUCED WITHIN THE GEOGRAPHIC AND POLITICAL BOUNDARIES OF FRANCE. THE FRENCH LANGUAGE WAS ONE OF THE FIVE MAJOR ROMANCE LANGUAGES TO DEVELOP FROM VULGAR LATIN AS A RESULT OF THE ROMAN OCCUPATION OF WESTERN EUROPE.
HISTORY - French literature began when writers started using the dialects that had evolved from the Latin spoken in the parts of the Roman Empire that would become France. Eventually, the dialect in popular use around Paris gained supremacy over the others and by the 10th century was vying with Latin for prestige. The 11th century witnessed the emergence of a literature in the French language in the form of numerous epic poems, called CHANSONS DE GESTE. These poems told of the heroic deeds of the knights fighting with or against Charlemagne. Of the more than 80 chansons remaining, the masterpiece is the CHANSON DE ROLAND (12th century), which narrates the death of Charlemagne's nephew, Roland, in a rearguard action against the Saracens at Roncesvallés in the Pyrénées. Exhibiting great skill in the differentiation of characters, this poem contributed to the awakening of a French national consciousness.
