Why book reading is important to you? Because each book deals with some selected topics, we can not afford to learn everything from a single book. What do you think about reading books beyond academics? In India, non-academic books are not getting much attention (in youngsters) because there are already a lot of syllabuses to read and conqueror when you stop passing your precious time or misusing your smartphone. Have you ever read a book from any genre: fiction, biography, memoir, literary fiction, or non-fiction, etc., or have you been procrastinating when suggested? Out of the blue, in 2018, I went out to buy a novel — for the first time — to read something stress revealing when I got frustrated with my Intermediate syllabuses.
And this is how I started reading books (daily reading). I got to know many writers and their works; I didn't know them before. I came to realize that I'd been missing out on many things and not getting advantages. When I started reading books, I got to know their positive influence on me. Gradually, I was developing my vocabulary; becoming — probably — a good thinker, and one of the best things I started realizing, over time, that I was becoming good at concentration. But there were many difficulties I faced. I handled things in the wrong ways because I hadn't any knowledge of time management and tackling the problem. Initially, I struggled with unfamiliar words. Whenever I came across unfamiliar words, I used to google that word. And tried to understand the sentence without memorizing those words, but after some time I forgot those words. So, when that word came again, I had to google that
again. It was my major mistake with handling unfamiliar words that you should avoid. Jot down unfamiliar words — don't leave a single one — in a notebook and revise it daily. After being acquainted with unfamiliar words, read that stuff again and see the change. How to increase your memorization power. Reading books is helpful when you understand memories and learn new things fast. We haven't been taught about meta-learning or memorizing things fast. We have been taught to implement rote learning (The process of repeatedly saying or writing information down to remember it is called repetition learning, otherwise known as rote learning).
If you want to increase your memorization power, then follow these four keys: Visualization, Association, Emotion, and Place. These four rules are keys to memory and all the learning: to learn any new piece of information, it must be visualized and associated with something you already know. Adding emotion and location makes things memorable for a long time. Let's take an example to understand how these keys work. Try to remember this list of words: Fire hydrant, Cow, Medicine, Hospital, Police, Helicopter, Stadium, Sunglasses, White, Slippers, Ballons, Net, Headphone. How to memorize (Memorization is fun) Keys: Visualize, Associate, Emotion, and Place.
Visualize a giant white Fire hydrant, wearing slippers about the size of a truck, running in the street of New York City crushing everything in its way. It is holding a cow in its right hand and an enormous balloon in its left hand. The cow is wearing big sunglasses and a huge headphone and listening to music and laughing insanely instead of fear. Police are following it by helicopters making too much noise. The fire hydrant put the cow on the roof of a ten-story hospital there are lots of medicines on the roof each weighs 11 kg. The police throw nets from the helicopter on the white giant Firehydrant running towards a square stadium. The Firehydrant get caught in nets and fell into the big stadium full of tall white grasses. Repeat this scene until it makes a clear picture in your mind.
Now, take out your notebook and write every word that you get from this scene. What do you see? ● A white giant Fire hydrant, wearing big size slippers. ● a cow in its right hand and enormous balloons in its left hand. ● cow wearing sunglasses and a headphone, listening to music. ● police in a helicopter chasing fire hydrant to catch. ● fire hydrant putting a cow on the roof of Hospital, which has lots of medicines, weighs 10 kg each. ● Police throw nets on the fire hydrant. ● Fire hydrant falls into the stadium, which has tall white grasses There are lots of strategies to learn about memorization. So, here are links to blog posts and a book from which you could get more about memorizing things fast
whether it's unfamiliar words, numbers, names, notes, the periodic table, and facts, etc. Recommendation: 'Unlimited Memory' is a must-read book for every student who finds memorization difficult work. Speed-reading There are many reasons for improving your reading speed. You should boost your reading speed because when you read slowly your brain hovers over different topics; you lose your concentration; you feel sleepy. So speed reading will help you overcome these problems, save your time, and make you a bit productive. Well, it's up to you. You can improve reading speed and comprehension by 20-50% or more. I increased my reading speed and comprehension by 44%, in two months. It needs persistence and a positive approach.
Although there are lots of speed-reading techniques, I prefer the tracker-and-pace method. Hold a pen with its cap still on and underline or track each line as you read it. Keep your eye above the tip of the pen and read, following your pen. It'll improve your reading speed. Move your pen fast, at first you won't be able to comprehend but with practice, you'll be able to read and comprehend fast. Note: You might not be able to apply speeding reading in the technical and legal document. Reading Objectives What are your reading objectives? As identified by Mortimer Adler in 'How to read a book.' There are three Reading Objectives.
1. Read to Entertain. — When you read for entraining purpose. 2. Read to Inform — When you read to get facts and information. 3. Read to Understand — When you want to understand some selected topics You could have different reading objectives at different times. So chose a book according to your reading purpose. Some of your friends might think that you should not choose to read comics, entertaining novels, and stories. But it's disgusting, read what you want to read, learning is not only confined to academics, it is everywhere — it's life long. Now, do you want to read a book — lots of books? If yes, then you could start with these books:
→ Limitless. → Alchemist. → Attitude is Everything. → Mindset. → Rich Dad Poor Pad → Harry Potter. → Eat that Frog Google these books and read about them if these are good reads. If you are not comfortable with the list above. It's up to you; you can pick up from any genre that interests you. But most important, at least read something daily. I guarantee you: you won't be the same person again. You will see your better self, if not yet.. Some assiduous readers.
