There have been so many benefits like: EDUCATION| • India as a whole, including our teachers and students are becoming tech savvy, like never before. • The number of leaves taken by students i.e. Absenteeism has decreased remarkably. • The number of days in which the school will remain closed has reduced considerably. Now schools can easily remain functional even during heavy rains, strikes etc. • Concept of E-books, PDF’s, PowerPoint presentations and Word documents makes easy and quick availability of educational content. It is extremely cost efficient as well. • One most remarkable miracle we witnessed was online technologies and electronic system of education coming to Rural India as well (I know there have been a lot of hurdles, but the good news is the introduction of online education has started in Rural India as well) • There has been an extraordinary shift in the mindset of students as well as teachers. The teachers are looking for more technologically updated methods and tools for educating students, at the same time trying to not lose the interactive essence that students need for better learning experience. The mindset of the students has also shifted towards becoming explorers than just advice takers i.e. now the students have started trying to make better use of platforms like Quora, Google, Wikipedia, etc. to find answers, than to just wait for the teachers to provide them with information. • Online Education has made education’s reach vast. Now with the advent of online education, now each student has access to vast number of teachers and educational material. Even teachers have access to vast number of students. Online education has paved path to the term called ‘Global Education’. Q: What are the hurdles that Chhattisgarh has been encountering in shift from face to face education to tech-savvy forms of education? A: There have been many hurdles that came in the way, as it is such a dramatic shift from our normal face to face education system. Many problems have been already solved; some are yet to be solved: • In the start, the teachers were not able to figure out how fast to go about or how slow to go about, to enable students’ understanding, as students and teachers were more used to the face-to-face interactive form of learning. • The teachers initially struggled with figuring out the lecture material creation. In the initial days there was certain ambiguity as to how and what style of content will be best. • Internet connectivity problems as well as Network bandwidth challenge were also faced. • Mobile phones, as used by Rural India is not the best medium for online education, sometimes bigger screens are required • Younger students needing the cooperation and time of parents to attend the classes. • Lack of sensitivity on importance of education by Rural India and problems in implementation there. After a conversation with Mr. Rajat Moona, Raipur Lifestyle magazine can only say that ‘Hard times are some- times a blessing in disguise. Let it pass, and let it make you better’. Hence let’s make the most of the door of opportunity that has come our way, and strengthen our education system to a level that we had never ever imagined. E learning 51

TOURISM| Palace Kawardha Content: Gaurav Girija Shukla, Ragini Toshniwal Photographs: Vivid Square Our state has its own culture and heritage that contribute to its beauty. From Bastar to Sarguja, each district has its own story; and Chhattisgarh’s royal houses have played an important role in shaping them. Henceforth, we have decided to celebrate Chhattisgarh’s royalty In this edition, we bring to you the ‘Royal Palace of Kawardha’. Its rich and diverse history is something to behold, and we could not have been more mesmerized. Palace Kawardha Kawardha, also known as Kabirdham, is situated some 117 kilometers away from Raipur.  Before indepen- dence, the state was known as Kawardha Riyasat and the Royal Family of Kawardha ruled the state.  The palace, occupying 11 acres of land, was constructed using Italian marble in 1930 by the reigning Raja Yogesh- war Raj Singh’s grandfather, Raja Dharam Singh. Raja Yogeshwar Raj Singh, fondly called as Raja Saheb, added that the carvings were made of Burma Teak, the electrical fittings were imported from Germany, and every room of the palace has been decorated with beautiful paintings commissioned from the famous painters of Bengal. Over the Darbar Hall is an eighty feet dome, which is an example of very fine architecture of the time. The place truly boasts of its royal culture, magnificent history, and rich heritage.  52

TOURISM|  In the year 1991, on the advice of his son Yogeshwar Raj Singh, Raja Vishwaraj Singh reconstructed the palace and converted a part of it into a heritage hotel. The other continued to be the royal family’s abode. Raja Saheb added that since then, almost a thousand foreigners visit the palace every year. In the past 20 years, the palace has hosted more than 20,000 guests. The tourists take special interest in the culture of Baiga Com- munity. They also like to visit Kanha National Park. The Royal Family After completing his school education from Rajkumar College, Raja Saheb moved to Delhi for his graduation. After graduating from JNU and completing masters in geography from Bhopal, he returned to Kawardha to oversee his heritage, and take his place as the head of the royal household. Rani Kirti Singh says that overseeing their heritage is the royal family’s priority. The running and maintenance of the heritage hotel demands consid- erable time and attention. At present, Late Rajmata Shashiprabha Devi, Raja Yogeshwar Raj Singh, Rani Kirti Singh and their son Yuvraj Maikleshwar Raj Singh reside within the palace. History The history of Kawardha Royal Family dates back to the 16th century, when Rani Durgavati was the ruler of Jabalpur. Kawardha was one of its provinces.   When the Bhonsle empire attacked the Kingdom of Rani Durgavati, Mahabali Singh, a prominent soldier of her army, won her the battle.  Grateful and appreciative of his capabilities, she crowned Mahabali Singh the king of the Kawardha province. The Royal Family Raja Yogeshwar Raj Singh, Rani Kirti Singh & their son Yuvraj Maikleshwar Raj Singh

TOURISM| Political Background of Royal Family The members of Kawardha Royal Family have been influential in the country’s politics. Post-Independence, Swami Karpatri found the Akhil Bharatiya Ram Rajya Parishad in 1948. Raja Dharamraj won elections as a member of this party. Later, Late Rani Shashiprabha Devi, wife of Raja Vishwa Raj Singh won elections as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Ram Rajya Parishad in 1977. After the death of Swami Karpatri in the year 1985, Rani Shashiprabha joined Congress on the request of Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Arjun Singh. In the year 1985, Late Rani Shashiparbha Devi was elected MLA from Kawardha Vidhan Sabha. In 1998, Raja Yogeshwar Raj Singh won elections against Raman Singh (Former Chief Minister, CG). He was an MLA for two consecutive terms. The Royal Dining Hall An interesting Story: Tree of Malpua Every Royal Family has its own famous incidents and stories.  There is one very famous incident related to Kawardha Palace, added Raja Saheb. Once a British officer came to the palace. At dinner, he was served dessert, Malpua, which he relished having tasted it for the first time. When he asked for its recipe, someone joked saying that Malpua is a fruit that is grown from the tree of Malpua. To take the prank a step further, the cook of the royal household hung fresh malpuas from a tree in the garden, which astonished the officer. Raja Saheb says, “I am an optimist. The pandemic has really affected the tourism sector. But it has also eased the pressure of tourism on wildlife. It’s high time we paid attention to the environment. Corona has managed to highlight the many inefficiencies in the system. I am hoping we bring ourselves to address those as well.” 54

DATING| Dating during COVID Content: Amisha & Ragini Toshniwal Coronavirus has been rampant, so have been our virtual dates. Raipur is a small city, but ever since it’s incep- tion as the capital, it has only seen progress. One such progress was the dating life of the youth around the city. Pre-Covid times saw young people hand-in-hand at Telibandha Talab, or sneaking away for drives to Naya Raipur, finding cafes and rooms to explore together. But one cannot deny that geographically Raipur is small; and since most of us have lived here all our lives, we just seem to have a lot of mutual friends. If we had to do some thorough background checks, this city offers unpaid detective work. But post corona, dating has been a sparse affair. The lockdown forced us to connect virtually, and while that’s fun, it just doesn’t tick. Once the lockdown started lifting, this city saw an influx of these youngsters, who had swiped to each other’s witty bios, finally get together for a real date. So, we interviewed a few of them, asking them their dating anecdotes through years. Their stories tickle you to laugh, and probably leave a lot to learn. 1. ALL TALK, NONE OF THE LISTENING I was living my dull, single life. It was an 8:00 to 8:00 routine, with nothing exciting, except maybe my baking. Suddenly one day I received an Instagram request from an old school acquaintance. Adulting had hit him like school bus, because he looked fine! I accepted his request, and we occasionally texted, catching up on the lost years. One day, however, we texted all night. Sparks flew, and we decided to meet. We met 3 days after the lockdown lifted. I was excited, but it soon weathered within a few minutes. He just wouldn’t shut up about his work! Here’ a tip for all the young people out there: LET YOUR PARTNER TALK! I returned home, and politely let him know that I wasn’t interested in keeping up the correspondence. 2. NO TRIANGLES PLEASE! So, I met this girl at a party and I knew that she was younger to me (note: not underage). We exchanged numbers, and texted all week. That weekend, we finally went out on a date to a café. We spent three delightful hours together, only to get to the point when she told me she already had a boyfriend! 63

Evidently it was an “open relationship”, a polyamory of sorts! Not my cup of tea. It obviously did not work out, but we keep in touch. 3. UNGENTLEMANLY MUCH? I know 2020 is the age of equality but men need to learn chivalry. A friend set me up on a date with his cousin, and I, being single and willing to know someone, started talking to him. He reeked of regrets, sexism, and I like a fool, ignored all the red flags. We fixed a time and a place, and he promised to pick me up for a long drive. On the day of the date, I waited for half an hour, but he was a no-show. I called him, and he said “You are an independent woman, right? Why should I have to pick you up?”. “Uh, because you said so?” I ghosted him. I guess like begets like. 4. ADAPTING AND HOW? At the core of humanity’s survival is adaptability. One day during the lockdown, I, out of boredom, download- ed dating apps on my phone, set up my profile, and set out on a swiping spree. Except, almost every woman I knew was an acquaintance. Eventually, I swiped right on a witty bio, and we started talking. A few days of back and forth, and we knew we had to see each other. We set up a virtual date. I enjoyed it, but I missed the little somethings that come with a “date” date. We still talk though, and are just enjoying each other’s company This pandemic has made me realize the importance of little things life offers us, a light nudge here, and a little touch there. These stories make us realize something very important. We may adapt, but some things are hard to let go off. Going out for a coffee, holding hands, watching a movie together, long drives, they’re hard to let go off. And those are the exact things we have been forced to give up. We have tried to bring in the flavors with creativity, while trying to social distance. It isn’t easy, and has added a sense of responsibility towards dating, amongst other things. The essence of dating is to have fun, build emotions, and maybe find love. Some found love, Others set out to find love, but found themselves. 64
