Low light images on your iPhoneMike [email protected] am excited – low light photography Get the most out of the standard iPhone camerahas always been one of the biggestchallenges for us photo enthusiasts. Apple have made the iPhoneTechnological advancements in thelater models have now enabled us to so simple to use, that it hidesattempt photos, previously not evencontemplated. some of it’s best features thatGreat photography is not about thetechnology. It is about identifying a provide some manual control.photo opportunity and learned visualliteracy to creatively communicate the Third party cameraintent of the image. However, if youfind yourself taking photos at night or replacement apps extend thejust love this type of photography likeI do – then the later iPhone models iPhone capability evenare worth the investment further! For now, let’s get the most out of your standard iPhone camera.Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito [email protected] http://mographito.com /mographitoIssue I Vol I

Our objective is to capture the subject within a sufficiently litand detailed scene, without the grainy artefacts or blurrymovement. These tips will get you started:•Stabilise the iPhone on a tripod orresting against a steady object•If practical reposition the subjectto a location, offering improvedlighting•Where practical, avoid capturingmovement in a low light setting•Tap the screen to focus – theiPhone can struggle in low light dueto lack of contrast in the scene inlow light•At times it is best to avoid swipingup on the screen to increasebrightness. This can introduce moregrain and can make bright spotsirrecoverable in editing•Take the photo without touchingthe screen – earphones, timer orBluetooth remote•Turn off HDR on iPhone models in7 PLUS or earlier. The later modelshave a faster processor to avoidmotion blur between each blendedcapturehttp://mographito.com [email protected] /mographito Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito Issue I Vol I

Live Photos Previously, when I present to large groups and go through the features of the iPhone and arrive at the point of explaining Live Photos – I would say it is gimmicky and a waste of time. Now, after the iOS 11 update – WOW, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Live Photos and apps available exclusively on iOS, prevent me from exclusively using an Android Samsung smartphone camera. It works amazingly well for static objects in a low light setting! Open the photo in the Photos app and swipe up on the photo to reveal the Effects options. Tap on Long Exposure and Done. This process removes the majority, if not all the grainy, and speckled artefacts referred to as ‘noise’ – typical of a low light image. You can also trim the start and end of a Live Photo and Long Exposure. Tap Edit to reveal the video film strip. Drag either end to trim the start and finish times of your long exposure. This is handy to remove (trim out) a person who appears at either the start or end of the Long Exposure. Tap Done to save.We are living in an exciting era of computational photography. TheLong Exposure Effect, blends and averages the series of imagescaptured in Live Photos together to produce one image. Grain israndomly positioned in each image and unlike a constant subjectin the image – is averaged and almost completely removed! TheiPhone then passes the image through their noise reductionalgorithm to produce an amazingly improved image.Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito [email protected] http://mographito.com /mographitoIssue I Vol I

Camera replacement appsUsing a manual camera replacement app like Procamera or ProCam5, quite often yields the same result as your standard iPhone camerain low light! This is because, each manual setting has a maximum andonce you hit the highest ISO or the slowest shutter speed – there isno turbo button to increase the settings. These two apps, howeverprovide some extra features that start to introduce us to‘computational photography’.ProCam 5ProCam is one of the camerareplacement apps that provide themost manual control andcomputational photography techniquesavailable in an iOS app. The iPad Prostandard camera can capture images atthe maximum shutter value of 1/17 anda high ISO of 2000. The Night Mode inProCam 5, allows you to choose aslower shutter of 1/8, 1/4 or 1 seconddepending on the iPhone/iPad model. Ifyou are using a tripod – there is abetter option in the app called SlowShutter.Tap on Slow Shutter to reveal capture options: Low Light, Light Trailand Motion Blur. This feature automatically captures a series ofimages (similar to Live Photos) and blends them together.Depending on capture option selected, the algorithm will producea different result. Each option will capture images at a minimumISO resulting in less noise and blend the images together, furtherreducing more noise!http://mographito.com [email protected] /mographito Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito Issue I Vol I

•Motion Blur produces ProCamera results similar to the Long Exposure effect, now This app has a Low Light mode and available in Live Photos. It fantastic in-app purchase available that blends and averages the is worth the cost of less than a cup of series of images, to coffee named Low Light +. Once you produce a single image. select the camera mode, tap the This is my favourite option hamburger icon to enter Settings. In Low for low light photos, using Light mode, there are more options this app! available than Low Light + including •Low Light mode will do shutter speed and ISO control and the same as Motion Blur priority modes. This is because Low Light and gradually brighten the + intelligently assess the scene and will image the longer you leave capture the required number of images it capturing the scene in to create Bulb mode. In this mode, tap the shutter button to start the capture and again to stop. •Light Trail mode blends the image similar to motion blur. However, any pixels that are brighter than the average tone in the scene will remain and not be averaged and removed. This produces those stunning light trails of vehicle lights passing through a scene. Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito [email protected] http://mographito.com /mographito Issue I Vol I

Now, the best tip-Another in-app purchase in Pro Camera is HDR (High Dynamic Range). When you tap on the settings icon, tap through the presets to LowLightHDR. This app captures a series of images based on the principles of HDR– it captures an image to capture all the details in the brightest part of thescene, another for the darkest part of the scene and at least one more in-between referred to as the mid tones. If the scene is quite dark, a tripodicon will appear warning you that one is required. This is going to test if you are not too over-whelmed so far by this article! The darkest image in this HDR capture will itself, be a series of images blended together. It is then blended with the brightest image and mid tone image. The app then applies a noise reduction algorithm before producing one image! How is that for computational photography. The results of a night time cityscape can be quite extraordinary compared to the auto photo straight out of the iPhone camera.http://mographito.com [email protected] /mographito Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito Issue I Vol I

RECAP Hopefully that article was not a TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read). If you skipped through to this part – here is the summary: •Choose somewhere that offers the most light •Stabilise the iPhone and avoid subject movement if practical •Avoid the 2X on the 7 Plus and 8 Plus models •Tap the screen to focus and avoid swiping up to brighten the image too much •Trial turning off HDR on earlier model iPhone if you notice movement blur •Use the Long Exposure effect in Live Photos to take incredible low light images •Camera app ProCam has a Night and Long Exposure mode •Camera app ProCamera has a Night and Low Light HDR modeMeet the Author Mike James is a twenty-year veteran photographer/educator and a late adopter to smartphone photography. Professional Photos with your Cell Phone. 29 Alex Almeida Fotógrafo [email protected] a DSLR cameramakes quality photos, oris it possible to makequality photo with yourmobile phone? This is a recurring question for many people. It is a fact that a DSLR camera will make quality photos and areessential for some types of work, for example: photographs formarriage, advertising and large events. For this type of equipment,it will require a high investment power. But I have great news. Your cell phone, which is in your pocket orin your hand, can make high quality photos and are suitable formany situations, for example: on your holiday trip and streetphotography.Knowing how to use your phone, you can generate photos similarto DSLR cameras. Another attraction that your cell phone offersyou is the edition of the photos on the device itself, and withinternet access, you can share incredible photos in minutes.Mobile photography has become so important that manyphotographers around the world are winning awards with thismodality. So, if you like to take photos, knowing how to use the functions ofyour cell phone and the basics about photography, your electroniccompanion will be enough to record great moments.http://mographito.com [email protected] /mographito Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito Issue I Vol I

1º Tip - Check the phone memory Before leaving to take photos, make sure you have enough memory available on your phone. If your memory is full, you will not be able to take photos. Make a backup of your photos in clouds, such as iCloud, Dropbox and Google Drive.2º Tip - Know the camera settingsBe curious and explore the settings a lot. Find out how you can getthe most out of your camera. Check the best way to use the focus andwhether the camera's resolution is at maximum.3º Tip - Clean the lensKeep your camera lens clean at all times. When using the phone daily,it is common for the camera lens to become dirty. Therefore, keep thelens clean at the time of taking the photos, thus, you will havesharper and more quality photos. Also avoid any accessories thatcould obstruct the camera lens.Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito [email protected] http://mographito.com /mographitoIssue I Vol I

º Tip - Use the camera behindTry to use the rear camera more, as it has more megapixels than thefront camera. Photos taken with the rear camera will bring much morequality to your photos. But if you are going to make a self, use thefront camera without fear.5º Tip - Strong ArmsNot shaking your arms is very important for the quality of the photos.Always look for a comfortable and stable position to hold the phone.6º Tip - LightAlways give preference to natural light and use the cell phone flashonly if the light in the room is not enough. If you want more detailed photos, avoid light being behind the objectbeing photographed, because when the light is behind you will seeonly the silhouette of the object. But if the expected result is just thesilhouette, keep the light behind the object.7º Tip - Do not use ZoomNever use the digital zoom of your phone because it only increasesthe size of the photographed objects and cut the edges, thus limitingyour options for editing the photos. Make your photos withoutzooming in, and if you need to make any cut, do this in editing.8º Tip - Edit and use filtersAfter you take the photo, and you want to edit it to leave it an imageshow. The hint is, use and abuse the editing apps, many cell phonesalready come with a native editor, or you can download an editorfrom app stores. After these valuable tips, now just practice. I am sure that soon you will bemaking wonderful and unforgettable photos during your tours and trips. And do not forget to share your photos here with Mo Graphito on ourFacebook page.http://mographito.com [email protected] /mographito Mographito Magazine 2018 /mographito Issue I Vol I
