From the authors: We are a group of 10th and 11th graders from Greenhills School inAnn Arbor. As the final project of our Global Citizenship class, we havewritten a children’s book to share with young people all that we havelearned. Global Citizenship is a unique class that explores what our roleis as citizens and how we can use our strengths to improve the worldaround us. It focuses on not only the problems at hand, but sustainablesolutions that are within our reach. Titled \"Being a Friend to theWorld\", our book compares being a global citizen with the friendshipschildren experience daily at school. We hope you enjoy reading ourbook as much as we enjoyed creating it. -Global Citizenship Class, Greenhills School 2017 (teacher: Julia de la Torre and students: Harry Bagenstos, Zoe Bly, Moira Cummings, Giavanna Galasso, Megan Gauger, Alexis Huczek, Khai Johnson, Kailee Kingston, Lucas Rubin, Alex Schneider, Emma Sherman-Hawver) 7

There, they landed near a giant Baobab Tree. From behind the tree, emerged one of Emma’s friends, Lisha theLion. “Jambo!” said Lisha. “Welcome to my savana. Would you like to play with me now?” “Actually,” said Emma, “we’re on an adventure with all of ourfriends from around the world. Would you like to join us on ourtour?” “I’d love to!” said Lisha the Lion. “Awesome! Hop right on!” said Logan. And the travelingcontinued to Greece. 14

Before anyonecould respond, Emma the Eagle fell over in pain. “What’s wrong with Emma the Eagle?” asked Logan. “She’s tired. The world is huge! Traveling through the cloudsin one day is far too much work for only one eagle!” “She’s got a booboo,” said Logan. “If we work together, we can patch her up, and I can make ithome in time for dinner,” said Logan. 22

23

“Here!” said Ping the Panda. “I brought an herb from my homewith me, just in case I got sick on the flight over here.” Ping pulledout some small herbs and fed them to Emma the Eagle. “Xiexie, Ping.” Ping smiled at Emma. “And I have something that might help too,” said Inaaya as shewalked over to Emma. “Take some water from my trunk,” saidInaaya as she fed Emma some water. “Thank you, Inaaya.” 24

25

Dimitris and Dimitra the Dolphins swam over and offeredEmma the Eagle some crystals from deep below the sea. Lisha theLion came over and gave Emma a hug, since friendship is the mostpowerful gift of all. Finally, Júlia the Jaguar gave Emma the Eaglea book of all their travels together. Once Ping’s special medicinesank in and Emma the Eagle realized the importance of globalfriendship, she was good as new again, and Logan made it home intime for dinner. 26

27
