2 | 2016 - NIH BTP Newsle er Message from the NIH BTP PI, Kent Leach Prof. Kent Leach PI NIH T32GM08799 Dept. of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery Welcome to our 2nd UC Davis NIH T32 Biotechnology Training Program (NIH BTP) newsle er! I am excited to take over the direc on of this program following the outstanding leadership of Bruce Hammock and Karen McDonald. Congratula ons to all of the new BTP trainees and their preceptors. I am looking forward to mee ng all of the 2016-17 trainees and their mentors at the upcoming Trainees’ Recep on on September 13. Our agenda will include introducing myself and the Associate Directors (Joanna Chiu and Luis Carvajal-Carmona), a pre-BTP program survey, learning from other trainees about their research, expecta ons of what it means to be a BTP trainee, a discussion of the annual Retreat scheduled for March 18, 2017, and an introduc on to the MyIDP program and its value in naviga ng your professional career. For those of you I haven’t met, I am a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery. During my 11 years at UC Davis, I have enjoyed working with many talented students and discovering the fantas c work from the various graduate groups. One of my past Ph.D. students, Allison Hoch, was a trainee in the BTP from 2013-2015, so I have observed fi rst-hand the numerous benefi ts aff orded to the trainees. She enjoyed tremendous professional growth during her experience. Many of my own graduate students have earned the Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology on their diplomas. We submi ed our renewal applica on for the 2017-2022 NIH BTP earlier this year. As science evolves, so must the BTP! Highlights of our program include new workshops in prototyping and 3D prin ng in the Transla ng Engineering Advances to Medicine (TEAM) facility, data analysis, entrepreneurship, CV prepara on, problem solving, and more! The BTP off ers a host of ac vi es that encourage diversity whether through science communica on or ESTEME (Equity in STEM and Entrepreneurship), a student-run organiza on. As part of the review for our renewal applica on, we will host a site visit for NIH reviewers on Tuesday, October 25. We need all of our trainees to par cipate in this process. All bios should be turned in already; if not, please email ASAP to Marianne Hunter ([email protected]). We also have a terrifi c seminar schedule for this fall’s MCB/ECH 294 seminar course, which is open to the public as well. This quarter off ers informa on on entrepreneurship star ng with a talk on the BigBang! Business Plan Compe on and Boot Camps with Niki Peterson (Program Manager at the UCD Ins tute for Innova on and Entrepreneurship) and last year’s second place winners Samantha Feng and Dus n Heeney (DEB students) with their startup ImmunoTag. Nancy Rashid will be discussing issues surrounding intellectual property and patents. She is a registered patent agent and intellectual property offi cer at UC Davis’ Innova onAccess. Other speakers of note include Zane Starkewolfe (former DEB student, now Associate Director of New Venture Resources at UC Davis), Lonnie Bookbinder (Founder, CEO & Chairman at Ariz BioPharma), and Aleisha Dobbins (Associate Director of Regulatory Aff airs Policy, Learning & Development at BioMarin Pharmaceu cals) who will speak about going from academia to industry. I encourage all of you to put these dates on your calendar and share broadly with your labs to take advantage of the casual discussions, rela onships you will build, and opportuni es that may emerge for your par cipa on. If any student has concerns regarding a disability, each of us are fully available to ensure your needs are addressed, and you are encouraged to contact any of us. The UC Davis Student Disability Center (SDC) is a great resource and is located at 54 Cowell Building on campus and their phone number is (530) 752-3184. If I can do anything to help you be more successful, please contact me ([email protected]; (530) 754- 9149). I look forward to a great year in the NIH BTP! Cheers, Kent
