On Aug. 26, the Korean Embassy in Turkey had a meeting with CEKUD’s chairman Eyup Devik and its board members to discuss creating a special Korea-Turkey friendship forest in Turkey, where many of its forests have been badly damaged by wildfires since late July. Founded in 1999, CEKUD is a Turkish non-governmental organization that specializes in various environmental issues. The forest will be created with 120,000 seedlings donated by Koreans. This large-scale donation had originally started out as a small donation that was made after the volleyball quarterfinal between Korea and Turkey during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. It was given by several Korean volleyball fans who were saddened by the Turkish people suffering from the wildfires. Lee Won-ik, the Korean ambassador to Turkey, said that the relationship between Korea and Turkey has been deepened through sports, adding that their close relationship has even helped them engage in a meaningful environmental protection activity together. To express gratitude to all the Koreans who have helped Turkey bring its forests back to life, Devik delivered a plaque of appreciation to Lee at the meeting. Devik also said that Turkey has never seen such a large-scale donation, especially one that began from a small donation that was made on an individual level. The organization is currently in negotiations with Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to discuss where to create the forest. Construction is slated to begin between October and November this year. According to Devik, Turkey has so far received more than 120,000 seedlings from Koreans, with more Koreans still looking to make more seedling donations to the country. Arts Yejin Hwang Staff Reporter The world-famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh produced a myriad of paintings throughout his artistic career even when he was in the middle of his most troubling times, suffering from severe poverty and mental illness. After Van Gogh was hospitalized at an asylum in the French commune of Saint- Remy-de-Provence, he produced roughly 130 paintings, which mostly drew inspiration from the plants cultivated at the hospital’s garden. Although there could be numerous reasons as to why Van Gogh engaged in painting, one possible reason is that his paintings helped him find relief from his pain. While Van Gogh was alive, he once described one particular painting as “the lightning conductor for his illness,” adding that he could keep himself from going out of his mind by continuously being committed to this painting. The oil painting titled Irises, which was produced just a year before Van Gogh’s death in 1890, is the painting that Van Gogh described as his “lightning conductor.” He specifically started creating the painting within a week after he entered the asylum in May 1889. As the title indicates, the flowers that are captured in the painting are iris flowers, which come in around 325 species around the world and a variety of different colors. The iris flowers portrayed in the painting appear to show the blue varieties, although many records have revealed that the ones from which Van Gogh got inspiration at the hospital’s garden are the purple varieties. However, records show that the color of the purple paint that was used in the painting was dulled by the passing of time. The color of the original purple iris flowers from which Van Gogh drew inspiration at the hospital’s garden made the painting a masterpiece on the symbolism technique. From ancient times until now, the color purple has carried a symbolic meaning of wealth and opulence. Accordingly, Roman emperors often wore purple- colored robes, and this eventually led them to be nicknamed “the purple.” With the color purple holding such a symbolic meaning and the painting depicting the purple varieties of iris flowers that have lost their pigment, we can speculate that the painting symbolizes Van Gogh’s longed-for financial success that he had never attained with his works while he was alive. Irises is currently being displayed at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. 16

The popularity of skateboarding has risen and fallen in popularity over the years, but interest in skateboarding has risen once again after the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. In the 1990s and early 2000s, skate culture had gained so much popularity that in 2001 there were more people who rode skateboards than people who played basketball. However, during the late 2000s and most of the 2010s, the number of skateboarding participants in the U.S. began to fall. Lately, the inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has caused a resurgence of interest in skateboarding all over the world. The International Olympic Committee had hoped to attract a younger audience to the Olympics, and it seems that its plan worked. Young people all over the world who watched the Olympics became interested in skateboarding. In the host country of Japan, which won a total of five skateboarding medals at the Olympics, the sport has drawn new interest, especially from girls. Japan won the gold and silver medals in the park skateboarding event and the gold and bronze medals in the street skateboarding event. Due to this, skateboard sales at some stores in Japan have almost doubled. Most of the customers are middle and high school students. The Olympics has also had the same effect in the U.K. where young people, inspired by 13-year-old Sky Brown’s Olympic bronze medal win, have also taken up skateboarding. According to Skateboard GB, the sport’s governing body in the U.K., online searches for skateboarding lessons have risen by 28 percent. The World Times October 2021 25

World-famous pop singer Rihanna was recently announced as the world’s richest female musician by Forbes magazine. Although some would have expected that her fortune was derived from her musical earnings, Rihanna’s wealth actually comes from her involvement in the cosmetics industry. Thanks to her ownership of Fenty Beauty, a brand launched by Rihanna in 2017, the singer is now worth an estimated $1.7 billion (W1.95 trillion). The brand was started with the intention of selling cosmetics for women of all different skin types, with a goal of inclusivity. The singer wanted to provide a cosmetics line that catered towards women with various skin tones, especially darker shades. Fenty Beauty is a joint venture run by Rihanna and French luxury goods company LVMH, which owns the international beauty store Sephora. Fenty Beauty is now worth approximately $2.8 billion (W3.2 trillion). Many attribute her success to her social media following. She currently has around 101 million followers on Instagram and 102.5 million followers on Twitter. Over time, she has used both social media outlets to publicize her products.
