Editorial Welcome to another brand-new edition of the Marthoma Vision. This edition brings you the news and updates from accords our Eparchy in the Oceania. In October, we mainly reflect on our devotion to our beloved Mother Mary, the queen of the rosary. Devotion to our Blessed Mother has been a part of the church’s life since its earliest days. As the Mother of Jesus, Mary is the epitome of faith and fidelity and the ultimate model of selflessness. She is our Mother; she loves us, she con- stantly prays for us, gently guides us and towards her Son. St John Paul II said that as a young man, praying the Living Rosary helped him realise that not only does Our Moth- er Mary direct us towards Christ, but Christ also directs us towards His mother. Christ is saying, ‘look what marvels I have worked for my mother.’ Devotion to the saints, especially our Lady, is crucial because it marks out why our faith is so special. As the world is continuing to grapple with the COVID-19, let us seek our beloved Mother’s special care for the people affected by the pandemic and the people who are at the front line supporting them: doctors, nurses, and volunteers, who risk their lives in this service. The 8th Pastoral Council of the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne, was held as an on- line meeting on Saturday, 4 September 2021. This year’s pastoral council was marked as the first pastoral council meeting since our Eparchy’s jurisdiction was extended to New Zealand and all the other countries of Oceania. Priests and lay representatives from all missions and communi- ties of New Zealand attended this meeting as special in- vitees. This pastoral council was blessed by the presence of the head of our church, His Beatitude George Cardinal Alencherry. His Beatitude formally released the eparchy master plan 2022-2026-Together Towards Christ October is also fascinating for the Australian catholic church; the First Assembly of the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia took place from 3rd to 10th October. Representa- tives from our Eparchy also have attended and contribut- ed to the discussions. We wish everyone the prayers and the intersection of our Beloved Mother. Jesus’ relationship with his disciples and his humanity, as re- vealed to us in the mystery of his Incarna- tion, Gospel and Paschal Mystery, shows us the extent to which God loves our human- ity and makes his own our joys and suffer- ings, our hopes and our concerns (cf. Everything about Christ reminds us that he knows well our world and its need for redemption, and calls us to become actively engaged in this mission: “Go therefore to the highways and byways, and invite everyone you find” (Mt 22:9). No one is excluded, no one need feel distant or removed from this compassionate love. THE EXPERIENCE OF THE APOSTLES The history of evangelization began with the Lord’s own passionate desire to call and enter into friendly dialogue with everyone, just as they are (cf. Jn 15:12-17). The Apostles are the first to tell us this; they remembered even the day and the hour when they first met him: “It was about four o’clock in the afternoon” (Jn 1:39). Seminary News Life of a Priest A Life for God and for others Bibin Velamparampil After the summer vacation, I came back to the seminary with lots of pastoral experience, which I learned from a parish priest who is living for his people. During the 2021 summer vacation, on 2 July I went to Cuneo, an ancient city in north- ern Italy. Rev. Fr. Biodo Mauro, the Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Bosco, was waiting for me at the railway station and he took me to the Cathedral. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Bosco is an important center of Catholic life in Cu- neo. I was in the cathedral for one month to help the Cathedral Parish Priest, espe- cially in the liturgy, and the summer pro- gram, organized by the cathedral for the children. These days gave me an opportunity to participate and assist in the liturgical ceremonies of two great feasts. The first one is the feast of St. Mary of Carmel, the most important local religious feast. Many members of the confraternity’, a group of laypeople promoting the work of Christian charity came for the feast. The liturgical ceremonies of this feast con- cluded with Solemn Eucharist Celebra- tion by Rev. Fr. Enrico, an Italian Carmelite priest. After the Eucharist celebration, I had a good discussion with this Carmelite priest. During our discussion, he enquired about Kerala and the Carmelite Congre- EPARCHY MEDIA COMMISSION 28 SYRO-MALABAR EPARCHY OF ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE MELBOURNE

I firmly believe that if a priest commits himself to God and to the peo- ple of God, he will be a happy and blessed priest. On 30 July I returned to Rome with lovely memories of Fr. Mauro, who gave me profound and overwhelming pastoral experience. In my return journey, I prayed: “Oh God, grant me the grace to live for You and for Your people”.
