Apprenticeships are only for 16 year olds Apprenticeships have changed considerably over the last few years so Apprenticeships are only for newly recruited apprentices it’s not surprising there are a few myths and misunderstandings. I already have existing qualifications, so I cannot apply Here are some of the common ones… Newly recruited apprentices do not have the same rights as other employees, therefore do not have to follow the same That is a common misconception, however there are no age limits. Apprenticeships are available for all ages, employment rules from 16 upwards. Completing an apprenticeship will affect my wage An apprenticeship programme can be for new recruits or for colleagues who have been working a long time. Apprenticeships do not offer career progression opportunities Even if you have a higher qualification, you can still do an apprenticeship, as long as you’re gaining new skills. I will have to go to college one day a week For example, if you have a degree in history or music, you can still apply for one of our programmes. I don’t work 30 hours a week, so I can’t do an apprenticeship Whether the team member is a newly recruited apprentice or an existing colleague enrolling onto an apprenticeship, the same employment regulations apply. All apprentices must be employed, paid a wage, and have a contract of employment. Signing up to an apprenticeship during any point of your employment will not affect your agreed wage. An apprenticeship standard is a recognised accredited qualification that will advance your skills and competence at that level. This is great evidence to your employer when applying for new roles or career progression. Of course, an apprenticeship cannot be the only reason why you may be offered a new position upon applying, however it can contribute. The majority of our apprenticeships are delivered in the workplace with visits from a dedicated trainer and virtual classrooms. Some do include off-site workshops, however, this will be explained when signing up. You can complete an apprenticeship if you work less than 30 hours, however, it will extend the length of the programme. Typically an apprenticeship will take 12-18 months if you are working 30 hours week depending on the level of the apprenticeship. Level 2 Level 3 Level Level 4&5 6 &7 Equivalent to GCSEs or Equivalent to 2 x A Levels National Qualifications (England/Wales) or Higher Equivalent to Foundation Degree/ Equivalent to Bachelors Higher certificate/Diploma or Masters Degree in Scotland Awards in Scotland (England & Wales) Batchelors 6 Degree/Graduate Diploma (Scotland)
