up and coming artist sshhamyraAShamyra, a singer, song writer from Paterson, NJ was born into a musically gifted family. Her mother, Sharon Smith, also a singer & father Melvin Smith, a guitarist, were touring musicians.Growing up in this environment, music became embedded in her. Shebegan singing in church as a child but it wasn’t until the age of 10,when Shamyra sang at her cousins’ birthday party, that she felt washer first performance. Embracing her gift from that moment on, shebegan singing nonstop. As she continued to sing at different eventsand performing in high school musicals, Shamyra found her uniquespark, drawing in more fans with every performance. The crowds’reaction from her voice brought an adrenaline rush to her and createda connection with people that caused her to want to share her ownmusic. Shamyra began her journey, knowing that it wasn’t going to beeasy, and left home at 19 years old, moving to North Jersey to pursueher passion in music. Through ups and downs, she remained focusedon her music and her goals were her priority. The struggles, hardshipsand joys of life in-between relationships and becoming a mother of twobeautiful children, molded her as an artist and continues to do so today. Her original music not only reaches your heart from the passion in hervoice, but also through the realness of her lyrics that leaves you with noother choice but to fall in love and feel exactly what she feels. Her soundhas been compared to an angelic mix between Brandy’s tone, Beyoncé’sflavor, and Lauryn Hill’s authenticity. Justin Mass Mr. Jose G. Morales, A.K.A. Mr. MBK, continues to see the vision of potential art- ists from all over NJ. It was at a recent Cancer char- ity event hosted by Da Sky Entertainment and MBK VISION where Justin Mass was discovered by DJ Choc- olate and quickly recom- mended to Mr. MBK. Mr. Morales quickly observed his unique voice and style and knew he would be a good fit to the team and movement. Justin Mass was invited a week later to perform at an open mic session, where he met some of the other MBK VISION artists. Justin Mass is now the newest member of the MBK VISION Entertain- ment list of artists, witha message that uplifts crowds with his sound and style. MBK VISIONcontinues to add to its already well diversified team, combining all thetalents and skills to work to create great music together, individually, andcollaboratively with other teams. They are truly seeking, working, andon THE RISE! Justin’s StoryHey what’s up everyone, Justin Mass here. I’m originally born in Man-hattan, NYC, but I currently reside in NJ. I’m a worldwide hip-hop art-34 We Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 www.jerseyturntupent.com
MBK ent.ist/producer/entrepreneur & my music is unique & hard hitting. I fell in love with Hip- Hop at a very early age & started humming the songs in my head & going over the lyrics day & night! I’ve been rapping (and making beats) for over 10 years & have a style that most say is quite impressive. Much of my influence comes from a mix of artists like Tupac, Busta Rhymes, Onyx, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Rick Ross, Common, & many more…the genres that inspire me are endless. My personal style is a mix of J. Cole, Kendrick L, Cypress Hill, along with my own spices & herbs to create a unique sound. I respect Hip-Hop & what it means & especially respect my fans& following for ALL the support shown every day. That support alonemakes all the difference to an artist and their success so thank you! Iam excited to be a part of MBK Vision Entertainment as we are ONTHE RISE to Greatness! Peace, Love, & Blessings We Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 www.jerseyturntupent.com 35
Justin MassYou’re born and raised in Manhattan, New York, so how can you de-scribe your childhood and your influences? Yes, I was born in New York City (Manhattan), NYU Medical Cen-ter to be exact & raised half of my life in the middle of NJ in MonmouthCounty, but spent a lot of weekends in the Baruch Projects located inthe Lower East Side of Manhattan. We grew up in a pretty dysfunc-tional family where my parents fought most of the time or my dad wasgone working triple shifts at times to make sure we were taken care of.I have seen a lot of arguments & pain but also had successes and goodtimes playing sports, vacationing in the summer, and having fun withmy brothers & cousins. My parents ended up splitting up when I wasabout 11/12 & I found myself going with my father because I was closewith my older brother & my mom didn’t want to separate us. My littlebrother stayed with my mom. We ended up in a one bedroom basementapartment with my father while he worked nights & most days, all thetime making sure we were provided for. It was around that time wheneverything changed for me.One of my biggest influences not long before the split up of my parentswas my older cousin Anthony, who use to love hip-hop & introduced meto some of the legends like KRS-One, EPMD, Method Man & Wu-Tang,Heavy D, Onyx, Busta Rhymes, Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, Biggie, &MANY more. I used to sneak in his room as a kid and put on his head-phones and play his cassettes. I fell in love with it! He also introducedme & my brothers to Video Music Box where we watched all the videos, and it lit a spark in me. It was then I can remember beginning to recitethe lyrics. What inspires you musically? I find inspiration from ALL different aspects of life from my past, present, & what I see happening in the future. It can come from anothersong, an argument, a joke, an idea that just pops up, or especially from36 We Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 www.jerseyturntupent.com
MBK ent.just being around others brainstorming ideas. That’s the beauty of it; inmy opinion life inspires us musically. How long have you been rapping? I started putting my own words together & rapping around 14 yearsold. I remember my older brother rapping & free styling a lot, whichinspired me as well. I used to read through his notebooks and practicehis words & then started coming up with my own rhymes. I recorded myfirst song at 16 years old. What is the message of your lead single “High Off the Smokin”? I am not trying to prove anything; however, I would like to have afun record that people can bump to that also has a hit feel with dope lyr-ics. Mainly I’m just doing my best to stay true to myself & not make mu-sic that imitates others. It’s OK to be yourself, have a great time, & lovelife with no regrets. Living positive & doing the right thing is always aBIG aspect of my music & something I’m looking forward to in the yearsto come. What’s the creative process behind your latest project? I own most of all the creative process in my music at this pointas I’m producing the project & track from start to finish. That includesmaking the beat, coming up with the hook & vocals, mixing & master-ing, & more. It can begin with a song idea, an inspiration, a beat I’mworking on or a previous beat. I let the creativity flow & do my best toput no limits on my music. It hasn’t always been that way though; in thepast I let others opinions stunt my music growth, but those days are over. What do you want listeners to gain from your latest project? The overall message of any music I write is to be positive, live lifeand have no regrets. I want them to gain & live by these messages. Idon’t want my words to be meaningless, because all artists are in a posi-tion to be able to help youth & change the culture for the BEST. Why notWe Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 www.jerseyturntupent.com 37
Justin Masstake what God has gifted you with & change the world the correct way. Ibelieve some of the new music on the horizon is doing just that. How long have you been affiliated with MBK Vision Entertainment? Our affiliation just began in June, but our connection was so in sync that it didn’t take long for me to realize that Mr. Morales and his team could help take my music to the next level, so I am happy to now be a part of the team.38 We Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 Have you col- laborated with any notables? If so, who? I’ve collabo- rated with Ran- som out of Jer- sey several years back. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Describe the lane you’re trying to create www.jerseyturntupent.com
MBK ent.in Hip-Hop? Getting to be in the studio & collaborate with French Montana &learning from him is a highlight. I’ve also engineered a couple of histracks before he made it big. The lane I’m looking to create in Hip-Hopis that we can all have fun & produce great records that inspire youth toadults to be themselves, love life with no regrets, & that no matter whoyou are & where you come from you were put on this earth to be thebest possible you.Besides your own music, what are you listening to? I listen to different types of music but recently I’ve been listening toBig Sean, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, & a fewothers. I feel you can learn so much listening to & studying artists likethese. How many projects have you released? How can people contact you? Two projects have been completed: “Blood, Sweat, & Tears” (about10 years ago), “Trial & Error” (about 3 years ago)People can contact me fastest on Instagram or Facebook.Email: [email protected]: (862)215-7459Facebook: www.facebook.com/justinmassmusicInstagram: justinmassmusicWebsite: www.JustinMassMusic.comWe Are Jersey Magazine JULY 2017 www.jerseyturntupent.com 39
