A PUBLICATION OF BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM Spring 2021

As we hear from many of our patrons that they have gotten the vaccine, our attendance has been picking up a bit and we are looking towards more in-person events. This is exciting for us at the Museum as, with most businesses, 2020 was less than stellar, but the future is bright. Our newest major exhibition featuring works by Ross Rossin that were inspired by a trip he and I took to the Southwest in 2019 is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. I have been able to personally watch this body of work come together and discuss the new levels of creativity Ross has reached. We felt the need to come up with a completely new art term to describe these innovative images. We are calling it Quintessential Realism and we invite everyone to come and see what that means. In looking a little farther out on the calendar, we are excited to announce we will be hosting an exhibition of photography by musical legend Kenny Rogers. Many people do not know that Kenny was a very good photographer. He was very serious about pursuing this art form, hiring some of the greats to work with him on honing his craft. We currently have a few images from Rogers’ portfolio on view in The Great Hall. The full exhibition will open in February 2022. In the meantime, we look forward to having you visit. We will be reopening some spaces that were closed, such as Sagebrush Ranch; however, safety protocols are still in place for your safety and that of our employees. Hope to see you here soon! The Booth Museum exists to collect, protect and exhibit art for the public’s enjoyment, enlightenment and education. Simply stated that is why we are here. What that basic definition leaves out is the Museum can also be a catalyst for the creation of art. Our newest exhibition CAPTIVATED: Rossin’s Southwest & BEYOND is a special example. Executive Director Seth Hopkins led artist Ross Rossin on a nine day adventure in 2019 and the majority of the artwork in this exhibition was inspired, informed, and/or influenced by the trip. Seth Hopkins and Ross Rossin outside the home The itinerary included visits to Bryce and Zion National Parks, of Georgia O’Keeffe Kanab, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, Four Corners, Aztec Ruins, Taos, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, Santa Fe and other wonderful places. However, as wonderful as the places were, Rossin notes they could not surpass the people with whom he interacted. Rossin photographed several highly interesting individuals and within a few weeks of returning home, he was creating paintings in a completely new style. The West left a strong impression on him and he has created work that conveys those feelings. “I felt this overwhelming sense of freedom, a sense of liberation, from anything that resembled my convictions or conventional thinking about traditional art and what it should be. That’s what the West did to me.” “The West is so powerful that at some point I realized I needed to create a visual language, a new artistic way to be able to converse with and about the Southwest.” “The light (in Taos) dances a © Ross R.
