A PUBLICATION OF BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM SEPTEMBER 2018

FROM THE DIRECTOR Residents of the deep American South share a common bond with those in the core of the American West. No two other regions of the country have such strong identities, based on shared traditions, and mutual admiration. The origins of this common bond can be traced to many sources. Among them is the fact that many who settled the West, especially Texas, were Southern born and bred. In addition, the romance of the West, conveyed in dime novels, newspapers and art prints during the depressed times following Reconstruction, provided momentary escapes from reality for many. It was the artwork of Frederic Remington that conveyed most loudly the spirit of the West to an enthralled Southern population.Frederic Remington: Treasures from the Frederic Remington Art Museum & Beyond will be the largest and mostimportant Remington exhibition ever shown in the South. Featuring more than 60 works of art in a wide range ofmedia, the exhibition will remind visitors where their parents and grandparents gained their appreciation for theiconography and mythology of the West. Opening on September 8, the exhibition will highlight Remington's artisticskill in many areas, including sculpting, painting with both oils and watercolors, drawing, print making and writing. In addition to showcasing Remington's mastery of multiplemedia, the exhibition will explore how his portrayals of theWest in painting and sculpture helped create the iconicimage of the old West that is still fondly rememberedgenerations later. Remington's enduring legacy as one ofthe most celebrated interpreters of the American West willbe further explored over the run of the exhibition throughguest lectures, special tours and educational programmingrelated to the exhibit. Former High Museum Director, nowspecial advisor with Leslie Hindman Auctions, andRemington scholar Michael Shapiro will speak at theopening. In addition, several Remington topics, includingthe use of his artwork as the inspiration for many classicWestern movie scenes, will be explored during the Booth'sannual art history symposium on October 26.While the core of the exhibition includes approximately 30 pieces from Frederic Remington Art Museum(Ogdensburg, NY) this exhibit goes \"beyond\" to include works from Buffalo Bill Center of the West (Cody, WY),Birmingham Museum of Art (Birmingham, AL) and a number of private collections.THIS EXHIBITION IS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF:Signature Sponsor Media Partner Platinum Sponsors Gold Sponsors Silver Sponsor Merrill Lynch Susan & Bill Brogdon Cobb EMC Robin & Mike Farrens Community Foundation WEALTH MANAGEMENT Century Bank of Georgia Bank of AmericaCoporation The Benefit Company Rick & Andrea Miller WBHF Steve & Kelly BucknerFORWARD ARTS FOUNDATIONCover: Frederic Remington, The Broncho Buster, An exhibition of art from the Frederic Remington Art Museum, Ogdensburg, New York.Above: Frederic Remington (American, 1861–1909).
