A PUBLICATION OF BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018
FROM THE DIRECTORFollowing an exciting opening weekend for our Remington Treasurers exhibition, we have enjoyed greatattendance among both our members and the public. We appreciate your help in promoting the exhibit to yourfamily and friends. During our annual art history symposium on October 26, we will continue our focus onRemington's important contributions to the Western art world and his influence on Western filmmakers, especially John Ford. For more information on this year's all-star lineup, see page 7.One of the things that made the Remington opening weekend especially exciting was the number of membersfrom around the country who attended. Guests from nearly a dozen states were on hand for the event. This trendcoincides with the increasing interest we are finding in collectors who want to meet like-minded people in theirarea. We have established member \"clubs\" in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. Members inthese areas get together at least quarterly to visit private collections and meet a visiting artist. In other areas, such as the Florida Space Coast, central Florida, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, we have organizedmore informal progressive viewing events or member get-togethers. Those attending any of these events arealways surprised to find people who live and work nearby who also love art, the West, and Booth Museum. Evenhere in the Atlanta area, we continue to find collectors and introduce them to their neighbors, such as at a recentgathering in Buckhead. If you are wondering if your new best friend, who likes the Booth like you do, might be just around the corner, contact Development Director Diane Homesley or myself. We will try to make some introductions or set up anevent in your area. Enjoying Western art and the Booth Museum is more fun with friends, so let us help you makesome new ones!Seth HopkinsExecutive DirectorCover: ©Quang Ho, Spring in the Canyon, oil on panel, 48 X 48” ©Scott Christensen, Prairie Storm, 2018, oil on canvas, 48 x 52\"THANK YOU TO OUR CORPORATE SPONSORS CENTURY PHOENIX AIR OF GEORGIA

East/West Visions: Scott Christensen and Quang Ho East/West Visions features two of America's most admired living artists, Quang Ho and Scott Christensen. Both are highly sought after by collectors and art students, well beyond the perceived boundaries of Western art. We look forward to them serving as Featured Artists for this year's Cowboy Festival and Symposium. Born in Vietnam in 1963, Quang Ho immigrated to the United States in 1975 and is now a U.S. Citizen. He first showed interest in art at age three and had his first one-man show as a high school sophomore in Denver. A National Scholastics Art Awards Scholarship allowed him to attend the Colorado Institute of Art. He graduated in 1985, winning the Best Portfolio Award among his graduating class. Art dealer Mikkel Saks took Ho's work into his gallery and successfully promoted his art. Today, Ho is regarded as one of America's great artists with art in major corporate and private collections around the world. Working mostly in oils and occasionally watercolor and pastels, Ho's subject matter ranges from still lifes and landscapes, to interiors, dancers, and figurative works, but he says the subject is of little concern. \"Subject matter is not really important to me. I can find visual excitement all around me - from a knot on a tree, graceful limp of a flower wilting, to a juxtaposition of a few simple shapes and colors...inspirations are inexhaustible. The real essence of painting is the dialogue between shapes, tones, colors, textures, edges, and line. Everything else follows including light, form, concepts, personal beliefs and inspirations. One day I may be interested in a color statement, and the next maybe a relationship of simple shapes; with every painting, there is a singular visual thought to be completed.\" Growing up in rural Lander, Wyoming, Scott Christensen's first exposure to art was watching his wheel-chair bound grandfather paint. \"What I remember best,\" Scott says, \"is the smell of paint in that house.\" When Scott fractured a vertebra in a college football game, he could have easily wound up in the same position. However, by the time he healed, he had decided to give up his first love and concentrate the intense energy and consuming passion he had devoted to sports to art. His studies included experimentation with numerous painting styles, viewing works by his friend Dan Gerhartz and closely studying the works of Swedish painter Anders Zorn, and Russian artists Isaac Levitan and Ilya Repin. He also turned to the works of Sir Alfred East and Edgar Payne for inspiration, men who were quite inventive in arranging the most important elements of a scene. Scott explains, \"Maybe you're standing in a place where the sky and the mountains are very dramatic; the trees have incredible color and the water is vibrant. You have to decide what you want your painting to be about, then have the discipline to render that element most important, and then paint everything else to support it.\" Scott was the 2000 winner of the Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy Museum, the highest honor in Western art. His work can be found in many of America's most famous museums, such as Gilcrease, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Denver Art Museum, Kimball Museum, and Autry Museum. Christensen works his magic in Victor, Idaho, in a craftsman- style studio that connects to an elegant exhibition space where collectors are welcome to visit. Bob Kolbrener: 50 Years in the West With the opening of Bob Kolbrener: 50 Years in the West on December 1st, guests will have the opportunity to share Kolbrener's experiences in the West through five decades of his black and white photography. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1942, Kolbrener attended nearby Washington University. Kolbrener initially took up photography as just a hobby in 1964. However, when he wandered into Best's Studio (now the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park) in 1968, his relationship with photography was forever changed. The exposure to the work of Ansel Adams sparked a desire to more fully explore the medium of photography. The following year, Kolbrener was back in Yosemite, taking a class from Adams. Other classes with Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Wynn Bullock sharpened his eye and improved his technique. Soon he was invited to be an instructor at the Ansel Adams Gallery and eventually at Adams' Spring Workshop in Yosemite. Bob and his wife Sharon Kolbrener established a commercial photography business in Missouri, giving themselves two months off a year. This allowed them to regularly take extended excursions to Yosemite and the West. \"Living as nomads for two months of the year for fifty years has resulted in an on-going body of work rich in substance and diversity.\"Over the next several decades, Kolbrener created a body of work that captured the unique locations of the Great AmericanWest including the California coastline. He also experimented with night photography, studies of texture and line, and nudefigurative photography, using his wife Sharon as the subject. Kolbrener still shoots black and white film in large viewcameras and prints the \"old fashioned way\" in a real darkroom, using fiber-based papers and chemical tray processing. \"My goal is to produce prints which truly celebrate those most exciting photographic moments.\"In 2008, Kolbrener was awarded the Best Foreign Photographer Award for Black and White Photography at the PingyaoInternational Photography Festival in China. Kolbrener has also produced several noteworthy publications including BobKolbrener Photographs: Twenty-five Years in the American West (1993), Kolbrener's Yosemite (2002), and TradigitalAutoGraphs (2016). \"The whole key, in any kind of [photography] . . . is to figure out a way to raise the bar.\"Bob Kolbrener: 50 Years in the West will present hismost well-known images along with a wide variety ofother subjects, allowing guests insight on his styleand the opportunity to see Kolbrener's recurringengagement with his favorite places and subjectsover time.
