2019 Artist of Excellence John Coleman Growing up in the proximity of Laguna Beach in Southern California, John Coleman fell in love with the smell of oil paint. Prints by Wyeth graced his bedroom walls. In high school, he immersed himself in art classes, continuing his studies at Art Center College of Design in L.A. But his quest to create art would have to wait. A successful construction career came first. At age 43, he finally brought his lifelong dream of being a professional fine artist to life. His hands-on building experience evolved to hands on clay. From the start, his sculptures focused on Native Americans. They sold quickly. John’s work connected with collectors, galleries, and museums. Never one to bask in his success, John sought a new accomplishment. This time, trying his hand at two-dimensional art, first charcoal, then oil. His first solo show, including the paintings, in 2016 was the third-highest selling exhibition of Western art for the entire year. What’s next for John Coleman? That’s a question you’re likely to hear him an- swer as the Booth Western Art Museum honors this historian, storyteller, sculptor, and painter with the 2019 Artist of Excellence Award. John Coleman becomes the eleventh artist honored at a Booth Gala, joining Howard Terpning, G. Harvey, Kenneth Riley, Fred Fellows, Glenna Goodacre, Mort Künstler, Roy Andersen, Tom Hill, Robert McGinnis, and Ed Dwight.
