“SHIR Joy!” Special Musical Shabbat Experiences at Adath Israel this year! Welcoming special musical guests Josh Warshawsky and Rabbi Mark Novak Shabbat at Adath Israel is full of joy and shir (song) each week. This year, to “amplify” our singing and music, we are thrilled to welcome special guests most months during the year. More details will come in advance of each Shabbat, but please meet our musical experts: Rabbi Mark Novak has been celebrating and leading with Jewish music for over a half-century, and received ordination from ALEPH as a rabbi and mashpia (spiritual director) in 2012. He leads Minyan Oneg Shabbat, Washington D.C.’s Jewish Renewal Community, and with our rabbis, will lead our High Holiday services in the Mandell Sanctuary this year. He is a professional musician, storyteller, ritual designer, composer, and playwright, among other talents. This year, Rabbi Mark will be with Adath Israel September 9-11 (Rosh Hashanah), September 18-19 (Yom Kippur), October 26-27, March 29-30, and May 10-11. Josh Warshawsky inspires and engages Jews across generations through music and teaching. A senior rabbinical student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, Josh is also on the faculty of Songleader Boot Camp, and travels the country to camps, synagogues, and communities, leading and teaching through music. He is an up-and-coming Jewish “rock star,” and over the last six years, he has served as the “musician in residence” at USY's international convention, leading ruach, song sessions, and writing original music for the last two conventions. This year, Josh will join with us for spirit, learning, and song at Adath Israel on the weekends of September 21-23, January 11-13, February 22-24, and April 12-14. 7

 22 Elul 5778 We invite you to a moving and meaningful evening of study, conversation and worship that will serve as a prelude to the High Holiday season. Go to adathisrael.org/selichot to view a complete schedule for the evening. Free and open to the community In cooperation with and funded by The Abraham Joshua Heschel Reading and Discussion Group This past spring, members of Adath Israel attended the Leonard Bernstein exhibit at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Prominently displayed at the exhibit was Leonard Bernstein’s statement, “my work was a search for a solution to the 20th century crisis of faith.” This year, the Abraham Heschel Book Group will begin by discussing Edward Kaplan’s biography, Spiritual Radical – A.J. Heschel in America. Through the study of Abraham Heschel’s life and thought, we will gain insight into Leonard Bernstein’s 20th century search as well. All are welcome to participate in this conversation – an inquiring mind is all that is required – there is no need to have read the book in advance.
