Influence of Modern Gadgets on our Kids Parents cornerThink about our child hood. It brings us immense pleasure even with the memories ofthose times. The kind of games we played, how we played, the festivals, the family gettogether etc. But is it the same with our children? Are they getting the kind of fun andenjoyment which we got? Majority answer would be \"No\".Wonder what the reason for this is? Over the years, people have become busy due tochanges in life style. Since we do not find enough time to spend with children, gadgetshave started coming into the life of our children. And now gadgets dominate their child-hood.Our kids are living in a gadget dominated society - be it a smart phone, video game, laptop, tablet or anything. Is there any child living in this era who doesn’t know how tooperate any one of these electronic devices? Certainly not!Children born today are technology-savvy almost right from birth. Many parents do takepride when they see their child using the modern gadgets with ease. Of course there aremany benefits. Some of them are:• Better Hand-eye Coordination.• Improves Language Skills.• Promotes School Readiness and Cognitive Development.• Increases Motivation to Complete TasksTechnology makes education more fun.For every peak there is a valley! The few cons of more screen time are:• Babies don’t learn to talk by watching TV / using gadgets.• Screen time poses a special threat to sleep and vision.• Background TV can interfere with a child’s ability to concentrate and communi-cate.• Electronic entertainment may crowd out creative play and imagination.• Children become lazy and it influences a child’s health mainly due to lack of exer-cise.• Loss of good manners and etiquette - lack of physical interaction with people andsociety means less social skills.

Parents corner Influence of Modern Gadgets on our KidsHere are a few ways to help our little ones take a break from Electronics.• We as parents should find time to spend with the kids. Spend time with them toengage in physical activities like playing with them, doing some gardening together withthem if possible, exercise with them etc.• During weekends / holidays instead of spending time in front of television orlaptops, take them to a park, or visit relatives or grandparents.• If kids are interested in extracurricular activities like dancing, swimming, singingencourage them accordingly. Please don’t force them into this. Different kids will havedifferent talents.• Involve them in indoor activities like colouring, painting, musical instruments.• Instead of allowing the use of mobiles / tablets before going to sleep, it will begood if we can narrate a story to help them fall asleep.Even though it’s not so easy for us to put all these into practice in one shot, at least wecan start doing some of these things from today. This will help to improve the child'ssocial and cultural outlook which will indirectly help us to groom our children in a bettermanner along with their formal education. Soumya. Managing Anger Parents cornerThere are ways in which we can manage a child’s anger. Understand that it’s normal forkids to get angry. Your child won’t always be happy with you or your decisions and that’sokay. Explore the causes of angry outbursts. Talk sympathetically to your child to findout triggers his anger. You will both learn to recognize the early warning signs thatanger is starting to rise.Don’t jump to conclusions about your child’s anger: anger often relates to a child feelingmisunderstood, falsely accused, unfairly treated, or insecure. If your child can’t explainhis view point, then leave him alone until he calms down. shouting at your child will onlyescalate the situation. However, explain that there are rules that your child has to follow, like no hitting, throwing breaking objects or using bad words. By involving children inestablishing the consequences for their behavior, you will find that your children aremore likely to respect the rules.Don’t try to threaten or reason with an angry child: if you try to say something to yourchild when he is very angry it will make the things worse give the child some space. Ifyou try to punish your child when emotions are running high, you will probably causefurther eruptions.Set a good example: if your child hears you abusing a fellow driver on the road, don’t besurprised if he abuses a playmate in the same way for snatching a toy. Tell tour childthat everyone including parents gets angry. Tell your child how you resolve your angerin a positive way. The more time you spend on praising their efforts, the less time thereis for punishment for falling. “The unknown energy that can help humanity is that which lies hidden in the child”(Maria Montessori) Nisha Ramesh Menon Mother of Nakshatra Menon Junior KG Bluebell
