What is Reiki? The word ‘Reiki’ is made up of two Japanese words: Rei (meaning ‘Universal’) and Ki (meaning ‘Life force energy’). When first explaining the concept of Reiki, we often start with the idea that Reiki (pronounced Ray-kee) is a form of energy based healing which can be used to help heal, purify and bring more love & light into our energy field. As we draw more love, light and balance into our energy system, we can then experience more health, vitality & wellbeing as our body’s natural healing ability is accelerated i.e. the body now has more ‘life force energy’ to heal itself. This is one basic interpretation of Reiki and is often the easiest place to start when asked ‘What is Reiki’. But as you will soon discover, Reiki is so much more than just this! For as you start opening up and experiencing the true delights of Reiki, you quickly realise that these ‘healing energies’ are actually helping you to open and awaken to many new experiences, realisations & understandings in your life. By connecting with these ‘higher energetic frequencies’ through your own healing practices, you are not only helping yourself to heal & purify but you are also able to uplift your energetic vibration closer to love, light & peace in your life. 5
History of Reiki… While the true origins of Reiki are said to date back to the beginning of time, it was through the spiritual work of Dr. Mikao Usui during the late 19th century that the Reiki energies were re-discovered and brought into the world as a form of energy based healing. Universal Life Force Energy itself has always been around, which means no earthly-being created it. I don’t think it’s fair to give someone ‘founding’ rights to Reiki because we’ve been tapping into it, in one way or another, for as long as history seems to show. However, it did take a human to understand, document and convey a specific set of teachings about it. I’ll now provide a brief ‘history’ about how Western Reiki techniques came to be. But like all stories, there are many versions, so don’t be surprised if you hear or see variations to what you’re about to read. It’s generally agreed that Japanese doctor Mikao Usui (pronounced u-soo-ee) was the one that recognized and documented Reiki’s power in modern times, around the turn of 20th century. He is often referred to as Usui Sensei; where Sensei (pronounced as sen-say, but often pronounced as sen-sigh) means Teacher or Master. Dr. Usui went on a self-discovery journey which lead him to a retreat near Mt. Kurama where he fasted for 21 days. On his last day, Reiki rushed towards him and into his third eye; he then went into a deep state of meditation or unconsciousness (it’s not quite clear which). While he was in this state, the Reiki symbols were shown to him. He was then able to use Reiki to heal himself and others and travelled throughout Japan and China teaching his technique and the Reiki Principles. Usui Sensei died in 1926, leaving behind many Reiki Masters to continue administering and teaching his healing methods. One of these masters was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi who championed the hand positions to treat ailments. One of his students Mrs. Hawayo Takata was elevated to Master level before he died, which ensured the techniques would live on. Naturally, Takata Sensei taught her students, who then went on to teach others. 6
So the cycle of passing on Reiki’s powers has been secured for future generations. And here we are, carrying on the tradition – with you being the next piece in this beautiful legacy! Dr. Mikao Usui. Japanese Symbol for Reiki. 7

The 5 Reiki Principles… 1. Just for today, I will let go of anger Anger usually appears after we step out of love in any given number of situations and is a very destructive emotion. We often see anger as a sign that there is something lying un-healed beneath the anger and most commonly, it can be the emotion of sadness that is being covered by anger. So please, next time you see anger flaring up from within you, ask yourself “where does this anger come from?”. And most importantly “how can I help to heal this issue?” 2. Just for today, I will let go of worry Worry lowers our energetic vibration - it represents a lack of faith in the divine plan and is very rarely a helpful emotion in any situation. What problems have ever been solved through worrying? 3. Just for today, I will do my work honestly Project your honesty outwards towards other people and inwards for yourself. Try to be truthful and authentic in all things that you do so that you can speak your truth, live your truth and be your truth! Do not give in to guilty feelings - just be honest with yourself and with your own feelings and express your honesty with much love in your heart. 4. Just for today, I will be Grateful How often do we give thanks and feel grateful for everything we have been given in life? Giving thanks for our eyes, our hands, our legs, the food we eat, the water we drink, the experiences that we have. There are so many blessings every day to be grateful for and so many benefits to being grateful for those things. 5. Just for today, I will love and respect (Kindness) all living beings Everything that lives is part of the universal plan and has a function to fulfil in life; even down to the tiniest of insects. When we live in love & respect for all living beings, we help to open up many new doorways on our healing pathway. 9
Introduction to Chakras… Understanding Chakras is an integral part of Reiki and energy healing, so it’s time I explain what a “Chakra” is! You’ve probably heard the term before, but just in case you didn’t know – it’s the Sanskrit word for \"wheel\". It’s believed that each of us have Chakra ‘wheels’ at our main energy centres in our bodies, which ‘turn’ as the life force energy moves through us. We have seven main Chakras, with each one relating to a specific location, function and colour. The type of Reiki I’m teaching you places importance on these Chakras; and as you progress in this book, you’ll learn the hand placements which correspond with them. Chakras and their functions 10

When doing healing sessions focused on the Chakras, as you go over each Chakra, visualise it at first glowing gently. Then as you continue your session, they glow even brighter and more healthily. Think of them like flowers budding, and your healing efforts allow them to fully bloom! 11
Feeling Reiki (Hand Energy Exercise)… The first step to be able to feel Reiki is to simply be open to the process. What I mean by that is to not focus on the thought of “I can’t feel anything” or to sit in anticipation. Keep your mind and heart open, quiet and still. It will come. 1. Relax. Get in a comfortable position, perhaps seated, and place both of your hands on their respective thighs, face up. 2. Visualise. “See” with your mind’s eye, the energy of the Universe pouring into your head – it looks like you’re sitting underneath a soft, glowing waterfall whose source is from the stars above – and that energy is filling your body up with radiance. Now, look at your left hand first, focus on your palm and visualise bright rays of light coming out from it. There are some straight rays, some swirly rays, and perhaps even some star clusters shining and encircling it all. 3. Play. As you gaze at this glorious picture, start to shift your eyes over to your right palm. As your eyes move, so does the beautiful dancing energy. It magically moves to where ever your eyes go. 4. Visualise. You now complete your eye movement over to your right palm and similar rays of light shoot out of it, too. 5. Rub. Once you’re ready, rub your hands together – robustly – for a few moments. 6. Hold. Now, part and hold them about a few centimetres (or inches) apart. 7. Feel. As you hold this pose, you will start to feel a connection between your two hands. This could feel like an invisible box or ball you’re now holding, and when you lightly push your hands towards each other – you feel a bit of a bounce or resistance. That’s Reiki! 8. Move. Still maintaining this stance, you can now pull your hands slightly further part, shift one up or down, and you will be able to feel the Reiki stretch and pull at your palms. 12
9. Compress. Once you complete this little bit of energy play, go back to the original position of holding your hands a few centimetres (or inches) apart again. You should now be able to feel the energy compress. 10. Intend. With this little compressed unit of energy, Reiki, you can now place it anywhere you wish! Feeling Reiki Dominant Hand The hand which you feel, is more sensitive to Reiki, is your dominant hand. It need not be the hand you write with. Practice the Hand Energy Exercise and get to know your dominant hand. The hand which is less sensitive is your non- dominant hand. Quick Tip! Visualisation is a very important part of Reiki. Whenever you practice, try to visualise. This will do take a little time, but with practice you will be able to do it easily. Also always follow your intuition and do what feels right to you. 13
Traditional Reiki Hand Positions (Self-Healing Sessions)… Now, we have come a long way. It’s now the time to learn and practice full self-healing session. Usually a full session lasts for 40-50 minutes for level 1. 1. You have to lay down and do this. 2. Make sure to do the Hand Energy Exercise before starting the session. 3. Before setting the intention, Thank for Reiki’s presence, Thank for your presence and also, Thank for your body’s presence. 4. Now, you have to set your intention for the session (Intention can be anything. But make sure to set it in a Kind Manner). Now rub your hands. 5. Then, follow the hand positions and keep your palms on given position for at least 3-5 minutes. Rub your hands after completing each position. Gently keep your palms on the given position, don’t give pressure. You can also put on a relaxing Reiki Music. 6. After completing all the positions, Give thanks to Reiki and express Gratitude and get back to your routine. Below are the Positions for Self-healings: 14

Traditional Reiki Hand Positions (Healing Others) Now it’s time to learn, how to give others, a full healing session. You have to follow the same steps as listed in the ‘Self-healings’ Section. Only the Hand Positions change a little bit. Same steps are to be followed. But for this Section, you have Thank for the person’s (To whom you are giving healing. Thank him/her in your mind) presence also. You need to perform the Hand Energy Exercise and Set the intention for the recipient accordingly. Follow the positions and Express Gratitude. Make sure to follow your intuition and do what feels right to you. Here are the hand positions: 16

Using Reiki to Charge Objects… Using Reiki to Charge objects is a very interesting part of Reiki Practice. You can do this technique for a number of objects. Frame your intention accordingly for whichever object you’re performing Reiki on. Your Intention is everything. Follow the below steps as a guide and design this process for yourself to suite your style. Here I’m giving you the steps to charge a glass of water as an example. 1. Perform the Hand Energy Exercise. 2. Remember to Thank Reiki, Thank Yourself and, in this case, the glass of water. 3. Set the Intention. Now in this case, you would like to intend in this way: “Dear Reiki, I humbly ask you to enrich this glass of water so that I may get rid of all the negativities. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!” 4. Now cover the glass with your palms and give Reiki to it for, at least, 10- 15 minutes. 5. After you’re done, Give Thanks and Express Gratitude. 18
Reiki Lineage, Final Assessment and Certification… Reiki Lineage Some might enquire as to what your ‘lineage’ is – meaning, what line of Masters you learned from. In all honesty, I don’t think lineage is important, because we all have the innate ability to tune into the Universal Life Force Energy. However, your lineage will be presented on your Certificate, just in case it matters to you or someone else. My Lineage Mikao Usui Chujiro Hayashi Hawayo Takata Phyllis Furomoto Claudia Hoffman Mary Shaw Christine Henderson Bruce Way Ariane McMinn Mona Khalaf Dharmadevi Melissa Crowhurst Sumiit Rasall You* *Only once you pass my final exam and receive my custom certificate Final Assessment & Certification After course completion, your final exam will be conducted within 3-4 Days.
