Futurism (noun) 1. Trends of the future 2. A social art movement which strongly rejected traditional forms and embraced The energy and dynamism of modern technology Starting in Italy 1909 futurism started to flourish and develop in the hands of Marinetti, a poet and Giacomo Balla, a painter. After a significant life change in Marinettis life he wanted to explore celebrating change, originality and innovation. I have developed a fondness for the valour of the original futurists that wanted to create a life of vitality, change and have a constant restlessness for modern life. Balla was one of the main components for futurism in fashion. He experimented with new fabrics that held new textures, designs, colours and cut that reflected audacity and movement. After research about futurism fashion movement seemed to reoccur in many manifestos, I believe it was important for them after wearing suits, formal wear everyday that they create pieces that allowed the ability to move, to move around and enjoy life and its fast pace. Along with the theme of movement and freedom within futurism Balla also explored gender within clothing during very preliminary stages of acceptance of gender roles. I admire the constant need to utilise every capacity of fashion and I believe these stages helped to break down walls within the industries. Balla also focused on reinventing the classic black suit he quoted ‘ The futurist suit must reject the melancholy of the black suit..’ In my opinion futurist fashion has moved away from the classic idea and I decided to look into what is futurism now and what does it mean to the future of fashion in this publication. ‘We must invent futurist clothes…daring clothes…They must be simple..’ Giacomo

Futurist fashion to me is more of a set of traits that influence future fashion trends rather than just one implement. I believe the traits of modern futurist fashion are Vitality, freedom, acceptance and innovation. I think in our modern age it is really important to execute acceptance within fashion and the industry. I have a strong passion for creating representation in fashion and accepting all sizes, races, genders and disabilities. I think more now than ever fashion is being designed for the body rather than bodies changing for fashion. Two future fashions trends that I believe will be key in future collections are subversive basics and layering. I chose to style the model in my publication in layers and basics to help viewers visualise the vision.

Amid the pandemic, economic crisis’ and accelerating impact of climate change subversive basics are going to be the forefront of everyones wardrobes; however these are not any old basic. They are elevated, good quality pieces that can be worn in a number of ways. These pieces are the building blocks of every outfit. A number of collections for SS22 showcased elevated basics. A few of my notable favourites and inspirations were: Mugler, Dion lee and Ottolinger. All of the above designers chose classic pieces like a suit blazer or classic white tee and rejuvenated them with cut outs, necklines and shoulder pads. Layering is my other future of fashion trend. Like subversive basics layering elevates old pieces in potentially sustainable way. You can layer up two pieces to create a whole new look therefore making the clothing more wearable leading to less consumption. Ottolinger as a designer has produced and relied on layering as a main component to their brand. They layer unique ideas on top of regular items to create a revitalised look. I also believe ottolinger is the perfect example of futurist fashion. They work off of movement and comfort made for any gender or anybody that wants to wear their clothes.
