❖ INTRODUCTION ★ APPLICATION SOFTWARE In information technology, an application (app), application program or application software is a computer program designed to help people perform an activity. Depending on the activity for which it was designed, an application can manipulate text, numbers, audio, graphics, and a combination of these elements. Application software, or simply applications, are often called productivity programs or end-user programs because they enable the user to complete tasks, such as creating documents, spreadsheets, databases and publications, doing online research, sending email, designing graphics, running businesses, and even playing games! Application software is specific to the task it is designed for and can be as simple as a calculator application or as complex as a word processing application. When you begin creating a document, the word processing software has already set the margins, font style and size, and the line spacing for you. But you can change these settings, and you have many more formatting options available. For example, the word processor application makes it easy to add color, headings, and pictures or delete, copy, move, and change the document's appearance to suit your needs.

It was primarily designed for the Java ME platform, as a low-end sibling for Opera Mobile, but it is now developed exclusively for Android. Opera Mini Red letter \"O\" viewed from the side at 45 degrees angle. Opera Mini was derived from the Opera web browser. Opera Mini requests web pages through Opera Software's compression proxy server. The compression server processes and compresses requested web pages before sending them to the mobile phone. The compression ratio is 90% and the transfer speed is increased by two to three times as a result. The pre-processing increases compatibility with web pages not designed for mobile phones. However, interactive sites which depend upon the device processing JavaScript do not work properly. In July 2012, Opera Software reported that Opera Mini had 168.8 million users as of March 2012.In February 2013, Opera reported 300 million unique Opera Mini active users and 150 billion page views served during that month. This represented an increase of 25 million users from September 2012. ❖ THE CONCEPT OF OPERA MINI Opera Mini is a mobile web browser developed by Opera. ❖ THE HISTORY OF OPERA MINI Opera Mini was derived from the Opera web browser for personal computers, which has been publicly available since 1996.Opera Mini was originally intended for use on mobile phones not capable of running a conventional Web browser. It was introduced on 10 August 2005, as a pilot project in cooperation with the Norwegian television station TV 2,and only available to TV 2 customers. A beta version was made available in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland on 20 October 2005. After the final version was launched in Germany on 10 November 2005,and quietly released to all countries through the Opera Mini website in December, the browser was officially launched worldwide on 24 January 2006. On 3 May 2006, Opera Mini 2.0 was released. It included new features such as the ability to download files, new custom skins, more search engine options on the built-in search bar, a speed dial option, new search engines, and improved navigation. On 1 November 2006, Opera Mini 3 beta introduced secure browsing, RSS feeds, photo uploading and content folding into its list of features and capabilities.Content folding works by folding long lists such as navigation bars into a single line that can be expanded as needed. A second beta was released on 22 November, and on 28 November, the final version of Opera Mini 3 was released. Opera Mini 4 Edit On 7 November 2007, Opera Mini 4 was released. According to Johan Schön, technical lead of Opera Mini development, the entire code was rewritten. Opera Mini 4 includes the ability to view web pages similarly to a desktop based browser by introducing Overview and Zoom functions, and a landscape view setting. In Overview mode, the user can scroll a zoomed-out version of certain web pages. Using a built-in pointer, the user can zoom into a portion of the page to provide a clearer view; this is similar to the functionality of Opera's Nintendo-based web browsers.
This version also includes the ability to synchronise with Opera on a personal computer.Prior to Opera Mini 4, the browser was offered in two editions: Opera Mini Advanced for high-memory MIDP 2 phones, and Opera Mini Basic for low-memory MIDP 1 phones.Opera Mini 4 replaced Opera Mini Advanced.Originally, Google was the default search engine on Opera Mini.On 8 January 2007, Opera Software and Yahoo! announced a partnership to make Yahoo! search the default instead. On 27 February 2008, Opera Software announced that Google would henceforth be the default search engine for Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. A version for the Android operating system was announced on 10 April 2008. Rather than port the code to Android, a wrapper was created to translate Java ME API calls to Android API calls. Later versions Edit On 16 August 2009, Opera Software released Opera Mini 5.0 beta, which included tabbed browsing, a password manager, improved touch screen support, and a new interface, with a visual Speed Dial similar to the one introduced by Opera Software in their desktop browser. The browser's use of compression and encrypted proxy-based technology to reduce traffic and speed page display has the side effect of allowing it to circumvent several approaches to Internet censorship. Since 20 November 2009, there have been reports from Chinese users that when they use Opera Mini, they are redirected to an error page leading them to download Opera Mini China version. This is almost certainly due to the Chinese government being concerned that users are using Opera Mini to bypass the Great Firewall of China. Opera agreed to route all of their traffic through government servers. In 2009–10: A press release announcing that Indonesia's Smart Telecom had chosen Opera Mini for their devices said that Opera Mini was the world's most popular mobile browser, and that Russia and Indonesia were the largest users. An iPhone version was approved for distribution by the Apple App Store on 13 April 2010.
On 3 September 2014, Opera started taking registrations for the beta version of Opera Mini for Windows Phone.Opera Mini was released for Windows Phone six days later, on 9 September 2014, as a public beta. This marked Opera's return to Microsoft's mobile platform since the demise of Windows Mobile. ❖ HOW TO USE OPERA MINI If you are a pre-qualified user, you automatically receive the free daily data with a limit of 50MB / day. ❖ BENEFITS (EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS) OPERA MINI Opera and Worldreader expand access to free ebooks for children and students in Africa during the Covid-19 outbreak OSLO, Norway, March 26, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Opera (NASDAQ: OPRA), one of the world’s leading browser providers, and international nonprofit organization, Worldreader, are expanding access to ebooks for children and students via the Opera Mini browser during the coronavirus outbreak.
Starting this week, Worldreader will offer a new selection of ebooks to Opera Mini users as well as a new web app designed for children. The regular version of the Worldreader app will keep providing free ebooks for young adults with hundreds of books for learning and pleasure, in categories including Learn, Health, and Career. The new app BookSmart from Worldreader, will offer a wide variety of ebooks dedicated for children. Both apps can be accessed from the Opera Mini browser, after tapping on the Worldreader speed dial icon. “When considering how to mitigate learning loss in a pandemic, it should be a top priority to address supporting reading skills and engagement with books, bridging the gap until schools are in session again,” said Rebecca Chandler Leege, Worldreader’s Chief Impact Officer. “Through mobile technology we are able to support the distribution of ebooks and attend the needs of millions thanks to the massive reach of the Opera Mini browser across Africa.” According to UNESCO, 82% of the world’s learners have been shut out of traditional schooling and education programs due to social distancing. With school closures causing significant learning loss, open online educational platforms are becoming more relevant for schools and teachers to reach learners remotely. “We believe that millions of children and students can benefit from our extended partnership with Worldreader, and access educational online content while the pandemic lasts,” said Jørgen Arnesen, Head of Marketing and Distribution at Opera. Arnesen also pointed out that there are several barriers in certain African communities to access online educational materials, especially when schools are shut down. “Throughout Africa, mobile data is very expensive, and the Opera Mini browser is massively popular due to its ability to reduce web page sizes and save up to 90% of their mobile data.” Digital solutions are key to keeping students reading while schools are out of session. With the Worldreader app, children and students can maintain reading skills, learn new subjects, and enjoy the escape books provide during this pandemic.
Latest Opera Mini Browser Updated with Multiple Indian Languages Support Opera Mini Browser is one of the popular browsers on Android platform. The Opera Mini Browser is so popular just because it has options to actually reduce your data usage by compressing the web pages shown to you. Today, the Opera Mini Browser has launched the first update in the year 2016, and with this update, they now support more than 90 languages, including 13 Indian languages. The Opera Mini Browser update for 26th January 2016 rolled out support for 90 languages in total, including 13 Indian languages and an improved download manager along with a new QR-code reader and generator. The new Indian languages that the Opera Mini Browser supports are: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. A lot of highly populated countries including India, Indonesia, Nigeria and South Africa, have a population that uses several native languages. Because of so many native languages, it is a challenge for the content providers to target users. According to a BCG report, in India, more than 70% of the population does not use English as their primary language. Now with launching support for new languages in the Opera Mini browser, this barrier will be removed. Language should not be a barrier that stops people from connecting to the internet and with Opera Mini, it will be easier for more people to connect to the internet. In older versions of the Opera Mini Browser, the language was set according to the language of the Android OS, but with this new version, the users will have the option to choose for the language. On the first run after updating the application, the users will be prompted to choose their preferred language, and Opera Mini will display all popular languages for the user’s country as an option to the user
With this update, the multilingual support is not the only thing that you get. Along with this, you get a QR-code reader and generator, and an improved download manager. The increased use of QR codes these days will help the Opera Mini users to scan them and view the web content to which it links. As for the download manager, the Opera team has done a lot of improvements and tweaks to improve the download speeds along with the stability of these speeds ❖ CONCLUSION: The new update for the Opera Mini Browser will definitely help people to get online, by providing them browser access in their own language. The move by Opera Mini to do such a thing is impressive, and with their support of data compression for web pages, people browsing the internet on lower internet speeds will be able to enjoy the internet easily. ❖ REFERENCES: https://www.quickbase.com https://en.m.wikipedia.org https://help.opera.com https://investor.opera.com https://gadgetstous.com
