THE SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION PROJECT’S CONTEXT “The Social-Ecological Transformation must comprise all spheres of Planet Earth. Otherwise, it will be impossible to mitigate or stop climate change, the deterioration of the waters and soils, and to improve the evolutionary conditions of the natural world” - Elmar Altvater, 1st May 2018 - Located in the heart of the Asia-Pacific, Southeast Asia is the world's fastest-growing region. However, the region is increasingly facing ecological and social challenges associated with dynamic economic development. Climate change poses major challenges to world resources, biodiversity, human health, the environment, infrastructure and food systems. Many people's livelihoods are threatened, of which Southeast Asia and Vietnam are most affected. With the current development model, economic growth is viewed in a very contradictory way as it is an indicator of progress and is often included in development policies. While the increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is seen as an indicator of improving the standard of living in a country, natural resources are increasingly being systematically eroded, similarly livelihoods are being destroyed in exchange for economic growth
