100YEARSof SOVEREIGNTY April23,2020marksthe100thanniversaryoftheopeningoftheGrandNationalAssemblyofTurkeyin Ankara,whichhasbeencelebratedasthe“NationalSovereigntyandChildren’sDay”sincethen.Ourstudents ElaNazKaraarslanlıandBerenLalDobrucalıfrom7/DwrotearticlesaboutthisspecialdaythatMustafa KemalAtatürkdedicatedtoalltheworld’schildrentoemphasizethattheyaresuccessorsofthefuture. ANOTHER W ORLD FOR CHILDREN April23,1920wastheopeningdateoftheTurkishGrandNationalAssembly,thefirstparliamentofthe republic.Thisdayrepresentsthefreedom andindependenceofTurkishpeople,itisalsothedatewhenthe sovereigntywasdeclaredfortheTurkishRepublic.But,thisdayhasanothermeaningforchildren.The founderoftheTurkishRepublic,MustafaKemalAtatürk,dedicatedApril23toallthechildrenintheworld. April23wasfirstproclaimedanationalholidayonApril23,1921.Then,itwascelebratedas“Children’s Day”onApril23,1927forthefirsttime.Turkeybecamethefirstcountryintheworldtocelebrateanofficial daydedicatedtochildren.Sincethen,wehavebeencelebratingthisdaywiththesameenthusiasm.UNICEF also recognised thisimportantnationalday asan internationalevent andWorld Children’sDay. Atatürkwouldseethechildrenasthefutureofthenation.Ithinkthebestthingaboutthisdayisthatchildren fromallovertheworldcancometoTurkeyandwecanhaveanopportunitytomeetthem.Thereisnospecific language,religionorrace.EverychildwhocomestoTurkeyfromanothercountryisdifferent.Eachchildhas differentideas.Alltheideasfromallovertheworlduniteinthesamewaythisday.April23givesussomany messagesandopportunities.Oneofthem isthatwecansolvetheworldproblemsbycollaborating.All childrenarefellowsintheworld.Allchildrenareequalintheworld.Because,weallliveinthesameworld andourworld’sissuesconcernallofus.Atatürkprovidedanotherworldforchildren,wherewecangetto knoweachother,shareourideaswitheachotherandseeothercultures.ThankstoAtatürk,thewholeworld understoodtheimportanceofchildrenforthepresentandforthefuture.Thisyearwewillcelebratethis specialday’s100thanniversary.Maybewewon’tbeabletohostthechildrenfrom othercountriesthisyear underthesecircumstances,buttheyarealwayswelcomeandwecanalwayshostthemwithourhospitality. WHATYOUREALLYNEEDTOKNOWABOUT CORONAVIRUS ThefirsttimeweencounteredtheCoronaviruswasinthe1930s,butithadnothingtodowithhumansback then.Therewerenoworriesaboutitatalluntil2019.Unfortunately,theCoronavirushasspreadtomorethan 150countries.Thenumberofpatientsanddeathsisincreasingdaybyday.Governmentsaretakingseveral measurestohandlethisoutbreakandraiseawareness.Well,therearescientists,professorsanddoctorsout theretellingusdosanddon’tsandtherearesomanypeoplethatdon’tevenlisten.However,thereisafactthat wearedreamingofflyingcarsupintheskyorlivingonMars,whileweareactuallylearninghowtowashour handsproperly.Therearestillsomepeoplewhodon’ttakethispandemicseriously.Itisprobablybecauseof thesymptoms.Thesymptomsarebasically:coughing,fever,shortnessofbreath,muscleaches,sorethroat, unexplainedlossoftasteorsmellandheadache.Itsoundsjustlikeaflubutitcancausedeath.So,disinfecting isverycriticalhere.Youcanusedisinfectants,sanitizersandalsowearmasks.Handhygiene,suchasfrequent handwashingoruseofhandsanitizersisarecommendation.Socialdistancingiseffectiveinpreventingthe spread.Thispandemichasbroughtnew wordsintooureverydaylanguage,suchaspandemic,outbreak, community spread, lockdown, social distancing, quarantine, self-isolation and stockpiling.
