ANOTHER W ORLD FOR CHILDREN April23,1920wastheopeningdateoftheTurkishGrandNationalAssembly,thefirstparliamentofthe republic.Thisdayrepresentsthefreedom andindependenceofTurkishpeople,itisalsothedatewhenthe sovereigntywasdeclaredfortheTurkishRepublic.But,thisdayhasanothermeaningforchildren.The founderoftheTurkishRepublic,MustafaKemalAtatürk,dedicatedApril23toallthechildrenintheworld. April23wasfirstproclaimedanationalholidayonApril23,1921.Then,itwascelebratedas“Children’s Day”onApril23,1927forthefirsttime.Turkeybecamethefirstcountryintheworldtocelebrateanofficial daydedicatedtochildren.Sincethen,wehavebeencelebratingthisdaywiththesameenthusiasm.UNICEF also recognised thisimportantnationalday asan internationalevent andWorld Children’sDay. Atatürkwouldseethechildrenasthefutureofthenation.Ithinkthebestthingaboutthisdayisthatchildren fromallovertheworldcancometoTurkeyandwecanhaveanopportunitytomeetthem.Thereisnospecific language,religionorrace.EverychildwhocomestoTurkeyfromanothercountryisdifferent.Eachchildhas differentideas.Alltheideasfromallovertheworlduniteinthesamewaythisday.April23givesussomany messagesandopportunities.Oneofthem isthatwecansolvetheworldproblemsbycollaborating.All childrenarefellowsintheworld.Allchildrenareequalintheworld.Because,weallliveinthesameworld andourworld’sissuesconcernallofus.Atatürkprovidedanotherworldforchildren,wherewecangetto knoweachother,shareourideaswitheachotherandseeothercultures.ThankstoAtatürk,thewholeworld understoodtheimportanceofchildrenforthepresentandforthefuture.Thisyearwewillcelebratethis specialday’s100thanniversary.Maybewewon’tbeabletohostthechildrenfrom othercountriesthisyear underthesecircumstances,buttheyarealwayswelcomeandwecanalwayshostthemwithourhospitality.
