MERLOT of the year WINNER THE SWISS-BELHOTEL TROPHY Church Road Grand Reserve Hawke's Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 WINEMAKER: Chris Scott COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Heavily merlot dominant, with the typical dark berry and plum fruit of the variety. This is lifted by top notes of fragrant violet and subtle spice. A savoury dark earthy complexity brings a more serious, brooding undertone to the wine. On the palate the wine is full bodied with good mid palate flesh, finishing with a long, fine tannin structure that will soften with time and ensure good cellaring potential. Blend: 83% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Well matched to a wide range of full flavoured game and red meat dishes. CELLARING: 2026 – 2039. VITICULTURE: A blend of the Gimblett Vineyard (75%) and the Redstone Vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle sub region. The Gimblett Vineyard produces darker fruit flavours and a solid tannin backbone, while Redstone delivers more fragrance and mid palate flesh. Both sites are free draining, gravelly soils that naturally restrict vine vigour. In conjunction with rigorous fruit thinning and intensive canopy management, this produces age-worthy merlot with depth, complexity and restrained power. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Destemmed and crushed for fermentation, the fruit was immediately inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation was allowed to peak at 34 deg C ensuring good extraction of colour and ripe tannin. Extended macerations are generally very positive on this quality of fruit and each tank had a total of three to five weeks on skins. The wine was then drained and pressed before filling to French oak barriques (40% new) to complete malolactic fermentation and subsequent maturation for 21 months. The wine was racked for clarity and bottled without cold stabilisation or filtration. Dense aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, black olive and juniper interwoven with wafts of liquorice, vanilla bean and mocha chocolate. Fruit flavours of black plum, black cherries and raspberry coat the surfaces of the mouth with density and length. Complex notes of graphite and lead pencil add further complexity. Fruit core is framed by spicy, savoury oak playing a support role. A wine that will only get better with age. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Aged rib-eye with simple seasoning of salt & pepper and olive oil cooked over charcoal. Grilled field mushrooms with garlic and thyme. Aged cloth cheddar or Roquefort cheese at the end of a meal. CELLARING: Very approachable now but will continue to develop for the next 20+ years in ideal cellaring conditions. VITICULTURE: The estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that is the source of the fruit for our newest addition APOTIGI is located in the heart of Marananga, the vines are 30+ years old and virtually dry grown. The terroir and attention to detail management allows us to produce fruit with exceptional concentration and varietal expression. The grapes are hand picked at the ideal physiological ripeness. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Daily sampling and tasting of the cabernet grapes ensured that they were picked at optimal flavour ripeness. The grapes were hand harvested and were destemmed and crushed into a single 5 tonne open top fermenter where twice daily pump overs were conducted to ensure maximum extraction of colour, flavour and tannins from the grape skins. At the conclusion of fermentation, the wine underwent post ferment maceration on grape skins for 13 days before the wine was pressed to 100% new French oak hogshead barrels for 19 months. Each barrel was tasted and careful selection took place before the final wine was blended. The wine is neither fined, nor filtered. SWEET WHITE of the year WINNER THE NORTHLINE TROPHY Giesen The Brothers Marlborough Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (375ml) WINEMAKER: Andrew Blake COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Finish is bright, energised and persistent. Apricot, pink grapefruit, ginger with concentrated vibrant tropical fruits. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Almond tart with honey roasted figs. CELLARING: Until 2026. VITICULTURE: The 2013/14 growing season began with one of the hottest starts on record until the end of December, with rapid even growth, good flowering and subsequent fruit set. Then through to the end of February temperatures were cooler than average helping strong berry development. March was warmer than the norm allowing excellent flavour accumulation. The region experienced late season rain, helping the onset of botrytis. Dry conditions through to picking allowed the grapes to dry up, building concentration of flavours. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Two separate vineyard parcels were used from Alma St and Matthews Lane. The age of the vines really helped build concentration into the wine. The fruit was block picked by hand and crushed by foot before being basket pressed over several days to extract as much as possible of the precious liquid. Due to its high sugar the ferment was slow and lasted for several months. This also helped build mouth feel and complexity into the wine. Five weeks in stainless steel tanks, reducing the temperature to stop the fermentation process.
