A VINTAGE FOR THE AGES The South Australian year in review, by Karyn Foster. To actually pick the fruit at the optimum ripeness and character is tough, and probably one of the hardest calls during vintage - shall we pick now, or shall we give the vine another week to gain an extra 1% character? VINTAGE 2021 – unprecedented, unique, unpredictable, uncertain, crisp mornings, warm sunny days and those odd showers washed the unimaginable, unfortunate, unfathomable, uncertain – are we ‘over’ U Barossa dust from the leaves and freshened up the vines. words yet? However, we survived and what a reward – a vintage that ticked all the boxes. In the new year, “A sharp burst of heat arrived. Australia baked for a couple of days and the Barossa was on full alert. Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and even Weather conditions across the State produced, in the words of Longview Cabernet all needed to come off and into the winery. At that stage it seemed Vineyard’s Peter Saturno “A vintage for the ages”. like it would be one of those hot vintages where everything has to be done in a hurry. SILVER LININGS ON COVID CLOUDS The New Zealand year in review, by Emma Jenkins MW These remain tumultuous times, but with producers rising to the challenge, the focus for wine lovers should be on the brace of stellar ‘pandemic vintages’ now in bottle and barrel. MAY you live in interesting times… the (likely apocryphal) Chinese saying markets (see NZ Newsbriefs), but the feeling in the industry is overall positive. seems all too appropriate these days, having learnt the hard way how much “Our importers have bounced back really well, and we are making up a lot of more relaxing it was to live in uninteresting times. That said, even covid clouds the ground financially that we lost last year,” notes Anna Flowerday, owner and can come with silver linings and in the case of New Zealand’s wine industry, winemaker of Marlborough’s Te Whare Ra Wines. “The UK is back with a real both harvests under pandemic conditions have been standouts in the very best bang and we can’t get wine there fast enough. I am also really heartened by way: brilliant wine quality. While the 2020 delivered its bounty under incredibly the world’s continuing interest in high end wines from NZ. We have signed up fraught times - NZ’s stringent lockdown was announced mid-vintage without with new importers in seven markets, five of which were totally new for us, and confirmation as to whether the harvest could continue - 2021’s grapes were there’s demand for a range of wines from our portfolio – not just sauvignon.” picked under no such restrictions and the weather gods were again benevolent. With the border closed to non-residents and extremely strict quarantine No vintage is without its challenges though, and 2021’s were largely down procedures for returnees, in-person engaged-with customers abroad has to labour shortages from NZ’s all-but-closed borders. Barry Riwai, winemaker been impossible for almost all producers. That has not stopped connections at Hawke’s Bay’s Alpha Domus outlines an all too familiar scenario across the from being made though - New Zealand Winegrowers has run an extensive country, “We were lucky that the weather was benign because we were not series of webinars and in-market tastings, and producers themselves have able to hire overseas vintage/winery workers…we had even changed the way become flexible in their approach. we prune our vineyard to the less labour-intensive spur pruning. Good weather and lower than usual cropping allowed a steady intake of grapes with little to Jen Parr says, “Grape growing and winemaking hasn’t presented us with no stress for me and the few Kiwi staff we were able to hire. The season being too many challenges during the pandemic but seeing our customers and early - two weeks ahead of average and a week ahead of our previous earliest finding new ones is more challenging with travel restrictions…on-line tastings vintage - also meant we could get pickers when we needed, between the end are now a real thing! We are learning to adapt, keep moving and find new of the squash harvest and the start of the apple harvest.” ways to grow our business. When I do get to share our wines in person, it feels more special than ever before.” Given NZ’s far-flung global position, it Riwai added, “We managed to retain really good levels of acidity which is seems very likely online practices will stick around long after lockdown and unusual for the high level of ripeness we had, and concentration of flavour border restrictions are a thing of the past. and colour in the reds was the best I've seen. While this was one of our lowest cropping years varieties due to the poor set at flowering, we couldn't be happier The closed border stopped dead in-bound tourism, with significant impact with the quality of the wine.” The latter sentiment is one echoed throughout the on cellar door operations. There has however been some offset from New length and breadth of the country. Zealanders travelling throughout their country, and the recent Auckland Delta- lockdown crater notwithstanding, hospitality has generally been booming. At Valli in Central Otago, winemaker Jen Parr, says, “If I had to choose one word to describe 2021 in Central and North Otago, it would be ‘harmony’. The vines, Barry Riwai comments that, “We sell most of our wine domestically, and have the minds and the weather seemed to work seamlessly together to capture an seen a little bit of a shift to supermarket sales but overall we have kept our pre- exceptional season. It is unquestionably the best season I have experienced in covid momentum.” Katherine Jacobs of Big Sky Wines in Martinborough concurs, 15 harvests in the region for white, pink and orange wines, which are exquisitely “Cellar doors have been running hot with plenty of Kiwis spending their travel balanced. The pinot noirs seem to be generously energetic and will bring smiles dollars within NZ. Business has held well, with increased demand from overseas and happy sighs when they make their way into the world.” though export is slightly more complicated with shipments taking longer and delayed payment terms”. The supply chain rife globally are causing hassles in Of course, with the overall harvest down around 20% (albeit with both directions, and its clear many wineries have had quite varied experiences significant variation across regions and between producers), there are depending on their particular market channel. These remain tumultuous times, fewer of these wines making their way into the world, and international but with producers rising to the challenge, the focus for wine lovers should be on demand is showing no signs of slowing. In the most recent quarter, export the brace of stellar ‘pandemic vintages’ now in bottle and barrel. The final words values were nearly NZ$600 million, up 9% on the previous year but 3% on how Vintage 2021 should be remembered go to 30-harvest veteran Andrew lower in volume with an accompanying 4% increase in the price per litre. Greenhough of Greenhough Wines in Nelson: “The signs are that the 2021 vintage is going to produce some outstanding wines...”. Sauvignon blanc shortages may already be causing headaches in key export Wine of the Year Awards Annual Edition 2022 W I N E S TAT E 183

MEMBER EVENTS COVID - 19 ALERT STATUS *Normally we would have a series of trade and consumer tastings scheduled across Australia at major function venues but with the current social distancing and constantly changing event rules in place this is clearly impossible. Although many events have been fortunate enough to resume in limited capacities, due to the nature of our events and the number of wines, people and the ability to self-pour at our public tastings it is a logistical nightmare with unfortunately too many liabilities to proceed at this time. It seems pointless to flag future possibilities at this stage when we don’t know when things will return to normal or rules will be relaxed. We regret not being able to give you more information, particularly to those sponsors, our valued members and supporters who love attending our events. Stay safe and healthy and as things evolve we will keep you updated. Event cancellations will be posted on our events section of our website. JOIN US TODAY!
