MERLOT of the year WINNER THE NORTHLINE TROPHY Rymill Coonawarra MC2 Coonawarra Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2019 WINEMAKER: Shannon Sutherland, Lewis White COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Garnet red in colour. Complex aromas of blackcurrant, black cherries, cedar box notes and hints of nutmeg. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine structure with rich fruits of the forest and a harmonious tannin fingerprint. Merlot encourages a softness and juiciness with bursts of ripe blueberries and fresh plum jam. Finally, the cabernet franc contributes juicy red currants and cinnamon. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: An approachable wine well suited to drink now around a pizza oven with great friends. CELLARING: Enjoy now, but will cellar for another 5 years. VITICULTURE: Sourced from 20-30 year old vineyards, spur pruned 3m row spacing. 2019 in Coonawarra was long, slow, dry and warm with negligible disease pressure allowing for harvesting of each variety of this blend at optimum flavour ripeness. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Varieties harvested and vinified separately. Temperature maintained between 18 and 24˚C with a peak of 28˚C in early ferment. Underwent malolactic fermentation post primary ferment, and matured in combination of tank and barrel. As each parcel matured we assessed parcels and blended to produce our harmonious and fruit forward juicy Coonawarra red blend. CABERNET SAUVIGNON of the year WINNER THE HAMBURG SÜD TROPHY The Musician by Majella Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz 2018 WINEMAKER: Bruce Gregory & Michael Marcus COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: The 2018 Musician has a vibrant colour with a bright ruby hue. In ideal conditions over the next 5 to 7 years the Musician will reward. VITICULTURE: The vineyards were planted between the years 1971 to 1989. All vineyards have a single wire trellis system and are mechanically hedge pruned and harvested. Rows run both north south and east west with supplementary drip irrigation given. The ability to reach maturity 7 to 10 days earlier on varying soil types can be an advantage in cooler years. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The machine harvested fruit was crushed and pumped to both rotary and static stainless steel tanks, a cultured yeast was introduced to initiate fermentation. After 5 to 7 days the grapes were pressed and the wine finished fermentation in stainless steel tanks, second and third use oak hogsheads, where the wine remained until the completion of malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked and returned for a further 8 months maturation, where all the individual batches were accessed for suitability, blended, stabilised and filtered prior to bottling off site. SWEET WHITE of the year WINNER THE WILLIAM ANGLISS TROPHY De Bortoli Deen De Bortoli Riverina Botrytis Semillon 2017 WINEMAKER: John Coughlan & Julie Mortlock COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Layers of nectarines, quinces, citrus flavours with a subtle hint of nougat nuttiness. Subtle oak interplay adds to the texture and a well balanced acidity gives length and structure to this delicious wine. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: A wine that can be enjoyed with a lovely selection of cheeses and dried fruits as your dessert or after dinner. It can also be served with an exotic fruit sorbet or peach melba. CELLARING: Can be enjoyed now but will also cellar for 10-15 years. VITICULTURE: Semillon is an ideal variety for botrytis as they are thin skinned and tightly bunched which when the Autumn rains and morning dews appear in the Riverina with the lovely warm days the conditions are ideal for the onset of the botrytis cinerea mould. Vines range from 15 years to over 40 years in age. Vineyards are spur pruned by hand in the winter and foliage is hedged in November/December to encourage some lateral growth to ensure there is sufficient canopy to hold the humidity when it occurs around the fruit to promote the botrytis. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Harvest began early May and lasted six weeks as each vineyard reached desired levels of botrytis. The fruit is crushed and left to soak overnight to further extract sugars and flavour before pressing next morning. Juice is then clarified and fermented in tank and once fermentation is completed the wine is clarified, stabilised prior to filtration and maturation for 12 months. 22% was fermented on French Oak staves, with 8% matured in 2 year old French Oak barriques and the remainder left unoaked to produce a youthful fruity sweet table wine.
