QUALITY MATTERS What does it mean to improve the quality of care? It means achieving better health outcomes and better Resident experiences. Our Home has built a culture of change around quality improvement. We not only celebrate our achievements in outcomes, but we also recognize our efforts in ideas and learning from the successes. SAFETY FIRST: FALLS PREVENTION Falls prevention remained one of our quality improvement initiatives in 2018. We noted that a more simplified approach is required for documenting the scenario of a fall. By doing this, we might prevent a fall or avoid a serious injury. Early detection of the cause is key for fall prevention. SKIN AND WOUND CHAMPIONS FALLS IN THE SPOTLIGHT: RESIDENT EXPERIENCE The clinical teams continued to work together in 2018 on developing the Skin and Wound Program. A female Resident was admitted to our Home Skin and Wound Champions were successfully after having severe falls in the community resulting introduced on each Home area to promote evidence in frequent visits to the emergency department based practices in skin and wound healing. FOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT In keeping with the Corporate Mission, Vision and Values, the Food Services department strives to offer the best service to the Residents and continues seeking out areas for improvement. Food Services management and front line staff attend monthly meetings to focus on quality improvement initiatives. Some of the improvements made in 2018 include but are not limited to the following: ffThe Admission Diet Order Form was created and implemented. This is a collaborative approach between Nursing and Food Services. ffThe master schedule revision created a full time position. This has provided greater consistency and better service to our Residents in the main dining room. ffA Dietary Transfer form was created and is completed upon receiving email with transfer change. This form is provided to the new unit so that they have all diet information available prior to the first meal. This reduces the risk to our Residents who might otherwise receive an incorrect diet order, texture and/or fluid consistency. ffIn the future, the Home is looking into acquiring A “Point of Service” menu program. This will facilitate prompt orders for the Residents. DID YOU KNOW? ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES In 2018, several capital improvements to the Brooks Street campus were completed. The first project was to replace the lights in Heritage Place, the Manor, VON, the North Wing of the Home, and the top floor of Old South (renamed Mapleview) with LED lighting systems. The lower and upper parking lots in this project were included in this project. As a result of this lighting project, several goals were achieved: MOHLTC lighting standards for LTC have been exceeded; a reduction in electricity consumption; the maintenance orders for burnt out bulbs have been substantially reduced; and the lighting effects are uniform throughout the campus. The next large project was the renovation of the Mapleview Resident Home Area (RHA) in the upper floor of the South Wing of the campus. This part of the building had been unused for a decade. The renovations included replacing: existing floors, all faulty windows, baseboard heaters, and repainting the entire RHA. The HVAC system was upgraded to include air conditioning. The dining room was rebuilt to include new cupboards and appliances. New furnishings were purchased for the Resident rooms. A new Nurse Call System was also installed. With the completion of the Mapleview project, the Home was able to complete the removal and replacement of the floors in Kempenfelt Court (KC). The Mapleview RHA was used as transitional housing for the KC Residents during the removal and replacement. With the completion of the flooring, the Residents were returned. In the future, Mapleview RHA will be used as transitional housing for the Residents of the South Wing during its redevelopment. IOOF SENIORS HOMES INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 11

KEMPENFELT COURT CELEBRATION Most recently we had a wedding come to our newly renovated Kempenfelt Court dementia care unit. The beautiful landscapes and murals provided a perfect backdrop for a grandfather to bestow blessings on his granddaughter and her groom. It was an emotional and very touching moment to witness. There was not a dry eye in the house. The Social Services Coordinator continues to complete Social Services Life Profile Assessments on admission. In keeping with our Strategic Plan and our QIP quality initiative to get to know our Residents better, she is completing a condensed “5 things to know about me” for the staff to assist them in providing more person-centered dementia care on Kempenfelt Court. 12 IOOF SENIORS HOMES INC. It provides consistent physiotherapy opportunities to its Residents twice daily. The innovative equipment in a designated physiotherapy room, location of all clients on one unit and dedicated interdisciplinary staff are keys to its success. A Convalescent Care Satisfaction Survey is delivered prior to discharge with results being tracked with favourable comments on quality staff, care, and service. MEET WAYNE: A CONVALESCENT CARE CLIENT Wayne has stayed with us several times for “tune ups” over the last few years. Wayne began his journey on the Elston Unit from hospital after fighting for his life. He came to us debilitated and unable to propel a wheelchair very far. Wayne walked out of convalescent care after 90 days with the use of double canes. Wayne is now living at home with his partner. “I have stayed in the Elston Unit at the IOOF near three or four times now, each time I return it’s like coming home. All the staff are welcoming and professional from the physical therapist to the people who clean the room, they’re always ready to assist you in any way you require. For me, this has really helped with all the extras.” IOOF SENIORS HOMES INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 13

Memory Care PROJECT IOOF MEMORY CARE UNIT The IOOF Seniors Homes recognized the need to improve the delivery of Dementia care. The Kempenfelt Court Resident Home Area was transformed into a neighbourhood so that our Residents with Dementia can live in an enriched, interactive environment. This Home area emphasizes the use of butterflies, which represent change, hope and transformation. We are showing families, friends, and our care teams that there is a different way of reaching your loved one by bridging into the reality of Dementia and embracing them for who the Residents are now. New memories are being created in our Kempenfelt Court neighbourhood. With Dementia, the eye has a reduced depth perception. High contrast needs to be used to draw attention to an item or entrance, and low contrast is needed to make exit doors disappear into the background for the Residents’ safety. By using colour to create this contrast, we were able to create a more pleasant and productive atmosphere. We have divided the West Wing and North Wing into city meets country, creating a pleasant transition. As a result, Residents are able to find their whereabouts more easily. For example, if they are walking and approach the change from the blue city skies to the green country fields, it will catch their eye: they may stop, maybe hold on to the hand rail, look around and change their direction. This one single change may prevent a Resident from falling or getting lost. The murals were created based on real concepts from the City of Barrie such as Kempenfelt Bay, the Spirit Catcher, the old Allandale Train Station, and the old Imperial Cinema. Each Resident door is unique. We created bright themed doors to help Residents identify their home and hopefully provide a redirection for the other Residents. The bright colour scheme can be stimulating and calming. We believe that this was the approach to take for our Kempenfelt Court Neighbourhood. 14 IOOF SENIORS HOMES INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

VOLUNTEER SERVICES VOLUNTEER IMPACT Many of the programs and services offered at the 22,412 Home, Heritage Place, The Manor, and the Terraces at Heritage Square could not occur without the VOLUNTEER HOURS assistance of our generous Volunteers. Committed, qualified and enthusiastic individuals work together and play an integral part in delivering quality programming and services for the Residents of the IOOF Seniors Homes Inc. The theme of our National Volunteer Week in April was Every Moment Makes a Difference. Making a difference does not always mean standing out in the crowd, as many of our Volunteers are humble, kind and dedicated to volunteering and serving others in every moment and interaction. They are adults committed to their community, high school teenagers, students, members of a service group and retired individuals. They are our very own Residents who create a vibrant community to live in and staff that want to give beyond the paycheck. They contribute 40 hours of community service and give 400+ hrs to successfully run a tuck shop and last minute store that provides an invaluable service with a smile. They shine a light of brightness, hope, comfort and peace when a Resident or family member needs support. It is in each and every moment that our Volunteers make a difference when they read to a Resident who cannot see, when they assist with a meal ensuring a Resident’s dignity and respect and when they hold a Resident’s hand when they are ill or dying. Our Volunteers sweat and toil in the gardens and together create an oasis for everyone to enjoy, take a breath of fresh air and relax. We are grateful that our devoted group of approximately 270 active Volunteer members assist with additional programs and services such as providing entertainment and helping at special events, Resident outings, fundraising events and many other unique programs. 268 21 ACTIVE VOLUNTEERS IOOF SENIORS HOMES INC.
