ROOKWOOD COMPANY INFORMATION 4 THE ROOKWOOD POTTERY COMPANY ARCHITECTURAL TILE COLLECTIONS One of the most well-known brands in America during the 20th century, Rookwood’s art pottery and architectural designs are renowned for their brilliance and quality. In Cincinnati, Rookwood’s studio was the center of cultural life and a popular tourist destination. Every visiting celebrity and dignitary wanted to see it. Every art student dreamed of working there. It was the place that put Cincinnati, Ohio and America on the international artistic map. Founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols, she expected her pottery shop to be exceptional. She hired a team of famous artists, talented art students and daring glaze technicians, encouraging them to exchange ideas and experiment. Less than a decade after its founding, Rookwood Pottery surprised the international art community by winning the Grand Prize at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. This international attention transformed the world’s perception of American art, paving the way for the American Art Pottery Movement of the early 20th century. It also marked a turning point for Rookwood, who was still making its world-class pottery in an abandoned schoolhouse. After 1889, Rookwood continued to receive a great deal of publicity worldwide for winning the top awards in other international competitions. Museums from around the world began requesting Rookwood for their permanent collections. Rookwood, like Tiffany & Company, became a staple in elite households and was sold across the United States through select retailers. In 1902, Rookwood added the Architectural Faience Department. This division rapidly gained national attention and became a popular choice for architects and interior designers. As popularity for Rookwood Faience increased, the department expanded production to include fireplaces, mantels, plaques, statues, fountains and garden pottery for luxury homes across the country. Today, all Rookwood pieces are made in our Cincinnati studio using the same techniques (with some 21st century upgrades) and attention to detail that made Rookwood famous over a century ago. The Rookwood process is a synergy of chemistry and art. Our glaze chemists and artists work in close association together in order to produce works of art that are as innovative as they are creative. Our glazes are developed in house, with a lot of attention dedicated to experimentation and testing. Not only do our proprietary clay formulas use the finest materials available, but they are also developed by our artists and are unique to Rookwood. From the first inspiration to the final product, the Rookwood process centers on the artistic expertise of our craftsmen, artists and chemists.
